A classic.

An excellent introduction to abstract algebra. The strength is clearly the problem sets. There are many problems with difficulty ranging from very easy to very hard. The exposition is easy to follow. Most proofs are very clear. However, this is probably not the most friendly book for the average math major--it would take a lot of hard work to absorb all the material.

The absolutely best, primus liber for abstract algebra! Recommend this also as a reference for elementary number theory.

Recommends it for: People learning abstract algebra
Shelves: maths
This was the textbook for my first course in Abstract Algebra. I found it exceptionally useful for learning basic Abstract Algebra. The mathematics is presented in a very enlightening way. Now that I've moved beyond this material it is not as useful anymore. And I don't ever use this book as a reference. However, I recommend this book to anyone learning Abstract Algebra.

This might be a difficult book if used as an introduction to abstract algebra. Problems vary in difficulty and the text moves quickly. Well-written otherwise and should be enjoyable for students who have a strong understanding of the material.

This book is easier to understand than the previous book by I.N Herstein, ' Topics in Algebra'. I came to like abstract algebra because of this book :)

I don't think is the best text for learning the material, but it could be worse. If you have a good teacher, then this book is fine.
