The Miser / The Idiot

Rate this book

L’avare (1666) is Moliere’s great satire on materialism, a funny yet sophisticated story of cunning, guile and double-dealing, not only by the Miser himself, but also by his family and servants. Will the children be able to marry their heart’s desires or will the old skinflint scupper the situation and secrete the stash?

4.5 stars (4/10 hearts). I did not read this book, but I watched the 2022 Stratford Festival production of "The Miser" for my English exam. I might as well come right out and say I did not appreciate the frequent usage of foul language and adult humour, and there was enough of it to make this a 4.5 star rating instead of a 5. Apart from that, I loved the play. It was hilarious! I couldn't stop laughing out loud in my classroom. And I quite enjoyed seeing how it had been retold in a contemporary setting. I look forwards to reading the original now.

(Also, shoutout to the Stratford Festival production; the actors and costumes were brilliant.)
