Winston Smith lives in a society where the government controls people every second of the day. He fights this world with love. But it's dangerous: love for another person can be punished by death - and Big Brother is always watching.
Orwell's classic story shows that there is no freedom unless ideas and beliefs can be questioned. This is as true today as when it was written, more than fifty years ago.
There's a lot here to keep you awake at night. "Doublethink" is happening all around us. Particularly in the time of Trump, we are told not to believe our eyes and are encouraged to doubt what he refers to as "fake news"-- pretty much anything negative about him, and anything from media other than Fox News! Sadly, Orwell was prescient regards to what is going on in our country, even down to the push for people to hate anyone who is different, the "other." So many parallels. When I first read it, prior to the year 1984, it didn't hit so hard. But now. . . . .
'It's a beautiful thing to destroy words,' he said. 'For example, a word like 'good'. If you have 'good' in the language, you don't need 'bad'. You can say 'ungood'.
In an interview David Icke, an English author, said about Bilderberg group, “They are a global elite which were to push human society into the direction of a global tyranny that would have made George Orwell wince”
But why George Orwell? Because George Orwell is well known for his works on social criticism. And, in his Dystopian novel 1984, he depicted the detailed picture of a totalitarian regime: mass surveillance, forceful servitude to the de-facto Leader, Big Brother as called in the context of the novel.
In this classic, political and dystopian fiction published in 1949, the author imagined a future(maybe, 1984 as the title suggests) which, in essence, is a critique of Stalinism and Nazism. The protagonist, Winston, being accused of sedition had to face anything and everything what many people face even in our time while they dare to be valiant against the tyranny. You will be startled to know the description of the torture he has to face before starting to love Big Brother because it was not enough to obey him.
This novel may serve as a prelude for anyone unaware of the current world order since many countries of the current world practise totalitarianism, at least in their foreign policy, under the disguise of liberal democratic system.
It appears that 1984 is a book based on a strict dystopian law. a society in which total dominance over people is necessary to remain powerful. Where everything is legal because there is no law, where political orthodoxy and chastity are directly related, where strong instincts will be suppressed, where lies become truth, where records are falsified, books are rewritten, and paintings are repainted, where there is nothing but the present, where even a divergent thought is a crime, and where you don't have any private emotions. Anything can be done to maintain control and put an end to any potential uprising before it even begins. 2 percent of the ruling class controls 98 percent of the population.
Despite this, the main protagonist Winston Smith thought to rebel and secretly wanted to break rules and joined an anti-party named "Brotherhood". As you read the book, you'll surely imagine the ending but quite oppositely you will be shocked all the same to predict the wrong ending.
The author seems to predict the future and tried to draw attention to some political injustice. Although, this absolute totalitarianism is impossible to exist now that people are aware of all kinds of human freedom. But, you will definitely get to know that how a government, in order to keep up the hierarchical society, can manipulate the resources, maintain a level of poverty and ignorance, create inequality and use the concept of war if it needed so. This book relentlessly reinforced the reality that normal brains are not wanted and are intended to be destroyed because they are seen as bleeding stains that need to be removed by greater powers. Surprisingly, this also emphasises the three steps of learning, comprehension, and acceptance to put these under their command control to move and dissolve. The super states are driven by a desire for dominance over people rather than things and a desire to cause suffering and humiliation in the process.
Read this dystopian book to get a glimpse of the political landscape of the future.
My Favorite Quote from the book
"PERHAPS ONE DID NOT WANT TO BE LOVED SO MUCH AS TO BE UNDERSTOOD."
It's a must-read for anyone who wants to understand the beauty of living under the watchful, caring gaze of Big Brother. Long live the Party! Long live Big Brother!
Very good but also very difficult to read, the difficulty lies in how sad and tragic the story is. The possibility of a dystopia like that emerging in our own world makes it a very engaging book. The writing and world building is excellent.
This book is a must-be-studied piece of literature, with back must-be-studied wards acceptance of doublethink and crime. It hypnotizes you, makes you believe in the Ingsoc ideology, it addresses the roots of the problems I have had in my entire life. George Orwell is simply a genius, and I could not have addressed these complicated thoughts about life. What is life itself, what is humanity, what is the point in living, the point of corruption, of love, of reproduction, of science, the use of the language of English. It certainly does change the way you see the world. Perhaps I am being a little bit too enthusiastic about this book. However, I am certain that this book has overshadowed my love for "Into Thin Air." Even after reading and writing this review, I am not quite sure what I have digested, what George Orwell wished me to believe in after my first read. It certainly is quite a shock that an author more than 20 years ago has been able to address all of my questions in life. This is a must-read.
Quite literally puts you in shock. I could not think straight for the next few minutes after reading this book. The wrong seemed right; the right seemed wrong, 2+2=5, the Earth is the center of the Universe, and justice here is injustice everywhere.
War is Peace Freedom is Slavery Ignorance is Strength
This is the first book i ever read and there's a reason this book is a classic. It's message has never been more relevant than today as we inch closer and closer to turning this book into a reality, much closer to the end of society as we know it than we have been in the past.
I am a big fan of horror and i honestly have never been so scared by anything like i was by this book due to the fact of how realistic it feels, the just complete erasure of what makes us human within the world of the book is something we can see today in our world, families pitted against each other with freedom, morality, religion, and reason thrown to the wind in favor for "safety/emotion." or whatever other haphazard excuses people come up with.
Watching the main character slowly wander towards an enlightenment is something that almost feels relatable. Even his weird, disturbing thoughts and quirks makes sense within the place he finds himself in.
Overall this is a book that has stood the test of time and always will, this is a book i believe everyone should read as a cautionary tale of what happens when we give too much power to governments and when we don't put enough attention into what is going on around us, not looking at the details so to speak.
"Achei chatinho.
This is a book that I read when I was in high school or college and did not think. much of it. Now, reading it as an adult, it has a completely different meaning.
Hard for me to get into. I didn't care about the characters. Maybe they weren't developed enough. I'm not sure why. The book seemed long. I wanted to love it since it's such a classic. Just didn't.
I ended up doing the graphic audio version. It was pretty intense. It gave you some insight into what life was like in Europe during WW2 and why there are so many fears circulating right now.
I've been meaning to read this for years and finally listened to it as an audiobook. Thoroughly enjoyed the story and the audible very of it with a cast of narrators was incredible
I hate hate hate 'classic' books, 'must read', it's a joke. once again just like with every classic book written by a man (I'm looking at you 'the picture of Dorian Grey'), women are placed into the category of one or multiple. The mother, the sexual and/or the dull.
I know it is a product of its generation, but how can something be claimed as undeniably intellectual and profound when, infact the author is so limited and inward thinking to have missed their entire point. Why do women, once again, have to preform more labour to translate 1984 into something that includes us.
Women were never intended to read this book, we were never thought of, never considered to be the future who would read this fiction. This is further proven by the book 'Julia' written in 2023 which is ment to make up for the absolute lack of meaningful thought of the original authors. I don't want to be an after thought (especially one published 74 years later), and I don't want to be encouraged to read books not written for me.
Dawladdu waxay soo saaraysaa qalab la yidhaah (telescreen) waxa uu ka koobanyahay kamarad iyo maykarafoon oo indho-indhayan ku samayanayaa dhaamaan qaybaha bulshada oo dhan meel kasta oo ay joogan sida; Guryaha, goobaha ganacsiyada, waxabarshada. Kaas oo laga dhuganayo qof kasta hab-dhaqankiisa, iyo hadalkiisa.
Dawladda waxay xoogga saaraysaa in ay badasho taariikhdii horre oo ay mid cusub qorto si ay ugu fududaato in ay xukunto dadka hab fikirrkooda, sida oo kale waxa ay badalayaan kalmadaha caadiga ah ee la isticmaalo , taas badalkeeda waxay abuurayaan erayo goonni ah si loo yareeyo hab fikirrka dadka, taasi waxay ka caawainaysaa in ayna dadku si quman u fikirrin sababta oo ah ma jirran erayo ay ku cabiraan fikirkooda.
Waxay sida oo kale mamnuucayaan dareenka jacayalka ee u dhaxeeya lammaanaha iyo Galmmada si ay u xukumaan dadka dhalanaya .
Winston Smith waa 39, waxa u shaqeeyaa dawladda, ma laha saaxib, gacaliso, waxa uu bilaabayaa inuu qoro buug ku saabsan noloshan adag ee u ku noolyahay, in kastoo haddi lagugu qabto adiga oo wax qorayaa, waa lagu dilayaa. Waxa uu isku dayayaa inuu sawirto nolol ka duwan tan hadda laakin ma helayo meel uu taariikhda dib uga raaco sababta oo ah waa la badalay taariikhdii horre oo dhan. Winston Smith labo qof baa u dhow oo midnna uu garanayan, mid ka mid ah waxa la yidhaah Julia, Julie waa gabadh soo jiidasho leh, oo ay ka wada shaqeeyaan isku meel, Winston uu necay Julia sababta oo waa Qurux badantahay mana shukaansan karo. Sida oo kale haddi u ku fikiro waa qof u gacan galin kara booliiska. Qofka kale waa O'brien oo ah Xubin ka mid ah dawladda, isna waa ka sarreeya oo waa boos ku jirra dawladda, inuu la saaxiibo waa ka cabsanayaa.
Maalin ayaa Julia waxay u reebaysaa qoraal ah (waan ku jecalahay) Winston waa ku farxay laakin si khaas ah isku ma shukaansan karaan sababta oo ah waa lala socdaa, waxay qorsheeyeen in ay dalka ka baxaan si jacayalka iskugu sheegtaan .
Winston waxa uu helayaa qof u neceb sida uu u nacay dawaldda oo ah O'brien, waxa ay ku kulamayaan gurigiisa, Winston waa ka shakiyayaa O'brien sababta oo ah ma jirro qof casuumi kara qof aynna dawladuu ogalayan, ugu damabayan waa tagayaa isaga iyo Julia waxayanna dhamaan isku raacayaan in ay kaso horjeedsadaan dawladda. Buug bay si wada jira ah u akhrinayaa ka hadalayaa (maxay u yihiin wax kasta sidan ) . Winston marka uu bilaabay akhriska buugga waxa ogaanaysa waaxadda qaabilsan dareenka jacayalka iyo hab- fikirka, waa la soo xidhayaa . Waxa uu ogaanayaa O'brien inaan ahayan nin kaso horjeeda nidaamka, uuna shirqoolay iyagga.
Waa la jidh dilayaa, dab baa lagu xidhayaa waa la ciqaabayaa, wax kasta oo u ku fikiray waa sheegayaa, isagga iyo Julia waxa ka dhaxeeyay waa sheegayaa. Ugu damabayan O'brien waxa u sheegayaa Winston waxay dawalddu sidan u samaynayso, in dadka maankooda la xukumo sidaada oo kale, haddan ku nidhaah 2+2=5 waa inaad qaadato. Winston waxa loo qaaday qol 101, kaas oo jiir ku jiro isnna waa ka baqaa jiirka, waxa ku dhawaaqayaa; waxad rabtaan ku sameeya Julia aniga maaha, isaga iyo Julia dibada ayay u soo baxayaan iyaga oon is jacalayan.
Winston imaka ma danayanyo inuu ku fikiro ka soo horjeedsado dawladda
