I would have loved this book as a child.

Each countries flags are organised by continent, with two paragraphs explaining the history, symbolism and meaning of each flag with a picture, small map and some very basic index facts.

It's up to date as of 2008, and of course Libya and other nations are outdated (not the fault of anyone, though) but it's still worth checking out. People looking for detailed histories on flags are better looking on Wikipedia, but young children interested in flags would do well to read this at their leisure.
