Please note: I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

A gripping psychological thriller with a heavy dose of metaphysics.

In A Coin for Charon, Dallas Mullican has created a gritty contemporary thriller with overtones of the paranormal. The author delves so deep into the head of the killer that the reader is right there with him, never quite sure if this is a madman or someone truly doing the work of God. As a delusion, it is portrayed with enough depth to the point of

I'll be 100% honest in first stating that I was given an advanced reading copy of this book that I would then in turn review.

So frankly I found this book a little hard to get into at first, not because of the way it was written or in that it was in any way lacking. But due the fact that most books that fall into this genre I had found to be lacking a certain something. I'd built up the idea that I would not like it before I'd started to read it.

Oh, how very, very wrong I was.

A beautiful sentence can capture my attention in as immersive a way as a painting, movie, or song might. In fact, I consider authors to be artists who paint with words. That said, there are certainly levels of art in every platform. This is a written masterpiece.

I know I talk about characters a lot on the blog, but really they make or break a story. There are some deeply damaged characters in the lead roles of this story that instantly drew me into their own worlds, minds, and realities. As I s

Disappointing read about a serial killer who believes he is acting out of religious calling and mercy for his victims. The story is filled with clichés and cardboard characters that don't rise above the stereotypes. Overdramatic at times and hampered by a very silly and unbelievable ending. The writing is ok but just doesn't have the punch to grab you and not let go. I've read too many quality serial killer novels to be much impressed by this middling effort.

[FULL DISCLOSURE: I received my copy of this book free from the author and/or publisher. I was not paid for this review and the opinion expressed is purely my own]

Dallas Mullican in his debut novel A Coin For Charon has written a briskly paced psycho thriller containing crisp dialogue emanating from well developed and sympathetic characters who become enmeshed with each other through the actions of a psychotic serial killer aptly named Gabriel. The story ties together the lives of a despondent h

This is a must have for anyone who loves crime thrillers. While reading this awesome book you feel what the characters are feeling. Sad, overwhelmed, happy, hopeful, cowed, frightened, angry and accepting. All of these feelings and many more are very intense. I know it sounds strange but that is how detailed and talented Dallas's writing is. I found myself sometimes laughing, crying and angry at the four main characters. But the most amazing feeling you will have is love. You will get to love al ...more

This is the first book I've read of Dallas Mullican's and I can say "it will not be the last". I loved this book, from start to finish it has you really caring for the characters especially The Seraphim Killer. Dallas makes you care about the people by his words and description of their lives and how they all ended up where and how they live. How often can anyone say they were hoping a killer would not be caught. What he was doing was wrong but he also helped people find peace. I would definitel ...more

Once every so often, but not often enough, something very, very special appears in front of you. Dallas Mullican has crafted a beautifully, powerful work of absolute brilliance. Magnificentally written, it was a pleasure to read. The cover itself is incredible, but even that pales against a story so meticulously shaped and sculpted, that you'll be utterly stunned to find its the authors first book. What incredible literary treats await is something to be very excited about.

I have a review in Amazon, one I made before my discovery of this amazing Goodreads site. I don't know how to link it, but I will just say here- for a debut novel Dallas knocked it out of the park! Alleviated all my "debut novel reading fears" in the first chapter.

MIND BLOWN!! Two simple yet powerful words when put together. A dark, as well as hope filled crime thriller that is so captivating, you begrudge any reason that forces you to put it down.
And THIS is a debut from Dallas Mullican, that's really pretty unbelievable, it's so polished and exceptionally well written, like he's been doing this for years.

The villain is not such a badass ...and the lead cops character is one of the best in terms of emotion, guilt and suffering. All in all...a good thriller that is perfect and enjoyable. Mullican is a very skilled writer..

One word for this book is WOW , I can not believe that this book is this authors debut novel. I was blown away with the way the author tore at my emotions. There hasn't been an author in awhile that has taken me to the pits of hell and pulled me back out. This book will leave you in a big puddle of emotions . Trust me I cried , I was disgusted and I even let out a chuckle or two and then there was the night I couldn't sleep , well you will have to read the book to find out.

A Coin for Charon, my first read form Dallas Mullican, and the first book in his Detective Marlowe Gentry series, is an enjoyable, multi-faceted dark fiction read. Pulling cues equally from horror, psychological thriller & crime fiction while throwing in a pinch of twisted humor, falling into the world of Detective Gentry is an easy task.

The main antagonist here is Gabriel. His actions, the root cause and triggers of his actions, and the way his backstory unfolds makes for a fascinating char

Dallas Mullican has crafted an incredibly entertaining tale in this, his debut novel. From the opening paragraph to the closing sentence, this book will keep you enthralled. The cover may give an indication of a supernatural tale but this is much more in line with a Red Dragon, or Silence Of The Lambs. Mr. Mullican certainly amps up the atmosphere as the killings increase, and he takes the time to let us meet and mingle with the main characters, (A cop (Marlowe), a killer (Gabriel), a doctor (Be ...more

A Coin For Charon is the debut novel by Dallas Mullican. Based on the cover art, I confess I expected this to be a supernatural tale, and while you can tell the author was raised on a steady diet of Stephen King books, A Coin For Charon is a suspense/psychological/police story along the lines of a Red Dragon. There is perhaps a slight spiritual aspect to it, but it’s definitely a “real world” story.

And it’s a good one. Mullican gives us some very memorable, easy to “slip into” main characters an

Whew! What a story!!! When I first started reading this book I had no idea what a rollercoaster ride of emotions it would be! From Detective Marlowe Gentry through all of the “victims” to…the Seraphim Killer himself, the emotions ride high. This is not just a story of a “killer” but one of love, pain, friendship, faith, life, death and hopefulness. Every character brings so much to this amazing story, each with their own tale to tell and living in their own hell on earth. What Dallas Mullican ha ...more

Impressive debut!

Our protagonist for this, the debut novel from Dallas Mullican is Marlowe Gentry - a police officer who witnessed the brutal slaying of his wife and is now hunting a new serial killer. I didn't really know what to expect from this novel. Is it horror? dark fantasy? As it turns out its an incredibly well written and thoughtful police story. I am a huge fan of author Joe Nesbo. His Harry Hole books are some of the best crime fiction books out there and I found myself enjoying this

Epic! A dark, brooding thrill ride. This is not your standard killer v. cop setup. This is deeper. Readers know psychological suspense can be anything but. This author will not disappoint ... as he escorts you on a dark railway of extreme emotions in this intelligently written story.
Let the cover seduce you and the stellar writing hold you firmly in place as you make your way through the story's maze to its end.

I had some mixed feelings when starting this book and was not really sure what to expect. The cover looks like a horror, the description sounds like a police story and in all honesty I tend to shy away from detective stories and the like. However there is just so much going on in these pages that before I realized it I was so totally immersed in these characters that I could not put it down. This book has separate story line ingredients that ultimately blend together like your mama's favorite cake recipe.
The characters are more layered than the rings of a thousand year old sequoia. Cops, doctors, kids, unhappy wives, abusive husbands, friendly grocery store clerks, the terminally ill and so much more. And all of that pulls together like a raging tornado with the unnecessary outer fringes tossed away while the cool stuff turns into a spiraled two-hundred-mile-per-hour vortex of plot

I wasn't sure what to expect when I started reading this book but I found a great read. I love crime novels and mystery and pretty much horror in general. This had all that and more. I loved the characters and I found myself rooting for them at times. For a first book this author nails it. It's well written and had me on the edge of my seat more than once. Laughing, crying or nail biting I kept reading until I was disappointed it was over. I highly recommend this book and I hope to see more from ...more

A grand slam

Dallas Mullican's debut novel. I'm in awe of his talent. This book, from cover to cover is amazing. Awesome cast of people, whom will leave you soaking in a big pool of emotions. The book follows the view of the four main roles.....the killer, the cop, the doctor and the sick. One hell of a roller coaster ride. I was giggle in spots, sobbing in others. Bloody brilliant book! Can't wait for more books by Dallas. He's got himself a forever fan in me.

A twisted tale of murder, revolving around the lives of various characters, whose stories become intertwined.
Very disturbing, well written, it was hard to dislike even the bad guys after knowing what drove them to their behavior.
The story was quite slow at times as the plot was laid out, then we were thrown into graphic, violent action.
It had a poignant ending that almost had me in tears.

Very captivating read that sucked me right in. The mind of this author flows towards the macabre and it clearly shows through-out this book.

This book is extremely well written with darn fine descriptive that makes the reader feel as if they are in the book.
