The Cunning of Uncertainty
Uncertainty is interwoven into human existence. It is a powerful incentive in the search for knowledge and an inherent component of scientific research. We have developed many ways of coping with uncertainty. We make promises, manage risks and make predictions to try to clear the mists and predict ahead. In 2007 she was elected ERC Vice President and in March 2010 succeeded Fotis Kafatos as President of the ERC. She holds a Ph.D. in Sociology from Columbia University, NY. and a doctorate in jurisprudence from the University of Vienna.
Her current host institution is the Vienna Science and Technology Fund (WWTF). Helga Nowotny is a member of the University Council of the Ludwig Maximilians University Munich and member of many other international Advisory Boards and selection committees.

After reading a favorable review of this in Science News, I was looking forward to a thoughtful and clear treatment of uncertainty in the world today. I was sorely disappointed. The writing is dry. The relationship to the real world unclear. The relationship to uncertainty uncertain. I refuse to read a word further.
