As France prepares for war against England, Jim Eckert, the Dragon Knight--a twentieth-century college professor transported to an alternate medieval England--discovers that he is all that stands between England and utter destruction. Reprint.
Gordon Rupert Dickson was an American science fiction author. He was born in Canada, then moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota as a teenager. He is probably most famous for his Childe Cycle and the Dragon Knight series. He won three Hugo awards and one Nebula award.
This story is very good, much better than the previous book. The threat is strong, the journey and adventures the characters go on is exciting and interesting.
The characters as always are excellent and the way they act is realistic, funny and well-written. Carolinus's relationship with his kettle is wonderful!
The biggest problem I had with this book was how much stronger Jim's magical powers were in this book compared to the previous ones Yes, he was upgraded at the end of book three but as this book is set immediately afterwards is seems unlikely he should be that much better without any additional training or studying.
The expansion into the magical realm is very interesting and we get to see much more of magician society and how it is run.
13 1993. This had everything that I normally enjoy - dragons, battle, chivalry but somehow it just didn’t gel for me. Maybe on another day but unable to recommend to the normal crew.
2020 Popsugar Reading Challenge - A book with a great first line: "The copper tea kettle skittered at its magic-given top speed through the woodland track." Thus begins the fourth book in the Dragon Knight series, with Carolinus's trusted magical tea kettle on a desperate mission. Jim has really come into his own by this time in terms of his magical abilities. The threat in this book centers on Jim and his Companions racing to find out who is behind an impending French invasion supported by sea serpents. The formula in this book is similar to previous volumes in all the intrigue and buildup to the final battle, but it works.
Jim and Angela are transported from 20th century America to a 14th century Europe in a alternate universe. Jim has magical skills and can transform into a dragon. When the French threaten to invade England with the help of sea serpents, he along with a giant and two fellow knights set out to locate the sorcerer who is behind the sea serpent aid to the French and stop him.
A fun and easy read. I love how Dickson writes. His word choices and sentence structure make reading his books simple and delightful. His characters are interesting and I thoroughly enjoy his creativity. Can't wait to read the next book in this series.
