Kaliope, Danica and Chiaran are Atlanteans. Kaliope and Danica are from the water tribe, and have the ability to turn into a dolphin and shark, respectively. Danica is a Guardian, the servant of Kaliope, charged with protecting Kaliope--a powerful soulsinger--and is also her whipping girl, beaten by Kaliope's ruthless herbalist mother whenever Kaliope "misbehaves." Also, Kaliope and Danica have a sexual relationship that is forbidden, and Danica is punished routinely for this.

This was a book that I found initially very puzzling. I don’t think the setting of the world was described very well so I found the skins/human/powers confusing. Once I got a little further into the book I got a better sense of things, but even at the end I was unclear on a few topics. I know this may partially be intentional for a slow reveal, but at times I found it frustrating.

World building aside, I found the characters unique and intriguing. None of the characters are perfect, in fact Kalio

This author does a wonderful job of teasing information and plot points out of the characters in this Atlantis-themed YA Lit novel and the narrator changes from chapter to chapter. Thus, the characters are developed well and all have strong voices. You'll find yourself relating strongly to parts of each character, while detesting others, quite like real life would probably be if we were empaths. This made for an immersive and fun experience while I journeyed emotionally with antiheroes, Kaliope, ...more

Wonderful book! Layla Messner gets what it's like to be a teen figuring out sex, love, and power. Her portrayal of Danica's emotions is note-perfect. I'm sure that many queer women will relate to the feeling of falling for a woman who likes the attention but doesn't exactly reciprocate it. The ending made me wish I could keep reading to see what happens next. Hope the sequel comes out soon!!

This book has a great concept that is imaginative and curious. I love stories about Atlantis and dragons and magic. All of these elements should make a wonderful story, but unfortunately the story fell flat for me. Most of it was the writing, typos, and word choice descriptions. The characters didn't draw me into the story. I think this may be from the quick switches of POV that occurred. The author does a good job at trying to juggle the complicated relationships in the book and Badra, really s ...more
