Billed as explaining the science of achieving extraordinary executive presence this book set a high expectation, promising to reveal 15 traits that executives can develop to help make an impact. Yet, it just didn’t leave the expected impact on this reader.

I admit that I was a little apprehensive about reading this book because of some of the reviews; some reviews stated that this book seemed like a type of "advertisement" for the Bates Executive Presence Assessment.

However, I pushed forward because a Vice President at my company recommended this book as the first part of our group's mentorship program.

This book provides a useful, structured approach to a topic that has been nebulous - "executive presence". Bates outlines 3 dimensions that make up executive presence - character, substance, and style. She outlines the five components of each dimension with clear definitions and examples.

While the book is a bit light on how best to make improvements in these areas, it is much better than the amorphous descriptions that tend to be used for this topic. As such, I recommend it to anyone who wishes
