As teachers and librarians we can be a judgemental lot. During the process of selecting books for use in the classroom, or to sit on shelves in our libraries, we are sifters. By that I mean we sift through stacks of books in an effort to identify those which serve our own personal agenda. This inevitably means eliminating books for one reason or another. For instance, it may be that the language is too simple, the themes and ideas too one dimensional, the structure too formulaic. During this pro ...more

Jo-Kin (aka Josh Atkins) is a funny but flawed, easy to like hero-in-the-making. As a lonely star-gazing super-geek, he's the boy least likely to save the universe. All he needs is a teammate and an opportunity. Full of action, adventure, and slobbering space monsters, Jo-Kin Battles the It is an intergalactic odyssey to be loved by any little earthling.

Josh has enjoyed a stellar solo career as a gamer, but now, with the earth's survival at stake and his friends in danger, he has to put his gam

I loved it. It reads like a kid-version mix of The Lord of the Rings, A Wrinkle in Time, and The Hunger Games. As I was reading it, I had a daydream where I would ask my future kid "which book do you want me to read tonight?" and they'd say "Jo-Kin Battles the It!"
I sure hope that becomes a reality one day :)
Keep writing, Karen!

Fabulously fun book which kept luring me back to read it. From nerd with no friends to space hero. My years 4s would really enjoy this book because it's high in action, fast paced and relatable. Love the theme of team work, believing in your self and having a positive mindset. Congratulations on such an important book for schools. ...more

This is a great book filled with excitement and perils. Our hero, Josh Atkins, aka Jo-Kin, goes on a steep learning curve. It’s aimed at readers seven and up who are sure to enjoy the ride. I can see kids reading this imagining themselves in red cadet suits. They may picture themselves going out into the universe to battle monsters.

Against all the odds, Josh wins a competition. He has always dreamed of being a space cadet. Winning this could make it happen. The surprises keep coming when he has

I consider "Jo-Kin Battles the It" to be a great book not just for kids but also adults... I enjoyed it very much... reading on and on, forgetting the time. In fact I read on and on way past my bedtime ( silly me did not put a timer on ) but had such a good feeling afterwards and next morning too even tho' I was somewhat worse for wear. The author Karen Tyrell taught about positivity, friendship and teamwork in such a nice and good way without appearing like teaching. I loved the imperfect human ...more

In this first book in the 'Super Space' Kids Series, eleven-year-old goofball Joshua Atkins (aka Jo-Kin) and his goofball mate, Sam Jones (aka Sam-Wich), must overcome their fears, use their wits, and work together to save Captain Astra from the most fearsome alien in the universe known simply but terrifyingly as the IT. Award-winning Australian author Karen Tyrrell has created a fun galactic adventure with a plot that moves at lightning speed, creatures that are out of this world, and an unlikel ...more

This book is captivating, a real page turner. In my opinion, it is Karen's best work to date. Not just for boys, children of any age will fall in love with this book and it's characters.
Beau's (aged 7) favourite part was when Jo-Kin and Sam-Wich turned around and the IT was behind them. I loved the idea Karen used to capture the IT. I found it very unexpected as no hints were given. Great writing.
