In this easy-to-follow instruction guide, accomplished wildlife artist Rod Lawrence shows, step by step, how to paint realistic fur, antlers, feathers, scales, and more. Techniques are given for acrylic, oils, and watercolors. 140 color illustrations.
This book presents some nice artwork and attempts to teach through multi stage examples how to replicate the process and results. My primary takeaway was the artist’s general 3 step method: start with midrange colors in an all areas, then move to the next lighter and darker colors, and finish with the lightest and darkest. I found the book’s content enlightening any appreciated the variety of focused features that covered different wildlife body parts. I would found inclusion of direct brush technique not just results of sequential steps.
This is my favourite painting book. It shows you how to paint fur, feathers, eyes, feet, in fact just about any wildlife related detail you can think of. It covers watercolour, gouache, oil and acrylic paints so there is lots for each type of painter. Great step by step examples show the detail of how to paint and it is written in a friendly style. It is accessible to anyone who would like to learn to paint animals and I highly recommend it.
Wildlife artists have to understand it all; fur, feathers, landscapes, glazing and this author is generous in sharing his expertise. I'm jealous though, since he gets to live in a log house on the Manistee River in Northern Michigan.
