I always enjoy the collections of short stories in Third Flatiron Anthologies, and this double issue didn’t disappoint. There’s a mix of ideas and feels to the stories included, from the weird, the amusing, the sinister, the haunting and the plain creepy. And that’s one thing I really like about this anthology. As this is a double issue my list of favourites is a little longer:

Ain't Superstitious' stories are respectively odd, dark, funny, beautiful, ironic, creepy, hopeful, and in some cases predictable. But even the occasional predictable story begins with a solid first line and moves forward with enough creativity and energy to make it almost impossible to skip ahead. I'm always glad when an anthology includes a brief description of the author of each story. I was amazed in reading many of the author bios here that most of the writers had previous credits, some in respectable, professional outlets. Amazed because there are very few stories here I would have considered buying for a magazine or anthology. In fact, the first couple of stories read (to me) like bad high school fiction.
