As an author, Stanley McShane is particularly gifted with vernacular speech; his seamen and miners speak in the colloquialisms of the day, which sometimes has me reaching for the dictionary, but the flavorful language makes the characters pop on the page. Sole Survivor is a collection of short stories and poems published by Virginia Williams, the granddaughter of the author, Patrick John "Stanley McShane" Rose.
