As an author, Stanley McShane is particularly gifted with vernacular speech; his seamen and miners speak in the colloquialisms of the day, which sometimes has me reaching for the dictionary, but the flavorful language makes the characters pop on the page. Few writers are as gifted with establishing character through spoken language as Stanley. Sole Survivor is a collection of short stories and poems published by Virginia Williams, the granddaughter of the author, Patrick John "Stanley McShane" Rose.

While Williams, who serves as the editor throughout the text, maintains that these stories are based on truth—and they may very well be—the reader could just as easily interpret the text as works of historical fiction. Patrick J (Stanley McShane) Rose wrote a number of manuscripts, short stories, poems, and painted illustrations to accompany his narratives. Most of what he wrote regarded sailing, in which he began as a cabin boy under his father, the captain, and later as his own schooners.
