Nikki Landry Swamp Legends #1
The Legend of Ghost Dog Island
Behind every legend lies the truth.
Moving is nothing new for ten-year-old Nikki Landry. Her fisherman father relocates their raggedy old houseboat several times a year in search of better crabbing spots. However, their latest move has brought her to a mysterious bayou where she feels something is watching her from a nearby island.
Nikki learns of a local legend about something sinister inhabiting those swamps, stealing the souls of dogs…which would explain the strange howling sounds. Papa reassures her there’s nothing on the island but gators and snakes. He would know. He’s spent his whole life trapping and fishing those bayous and swamps. But Nikki and her new friends uncover strange happenings from years ago that may have started the old legend, and town folks aren’t talking. Then her beloved beagle goes missing.
Join Nikki as she seeks to discover the real truth behind the legend of Ghost Dog Island…before it’s too late.

If you appreciate atmosphere in your historical mystery, this would be a great choice. Ms. Monette took me back to my own childhood when I visited the bayou country of Louisiana. She does a great job of maintaining an authentic MG voice throughout this tale of a young girl trying to solve a mystery, and trying to find her place in the world. Her characters are three-dimensional - even her little dog, Snooper, who proved to be just as plucky as his mistress. I bought this book for myself as a Christmas gift, and I enjoyed it very much.

If you are a fan of mystery novels similar to Trixie Belden or Nancy Drew, you will love this book. Rita Monette is a very gifted story-teller and her illustrations are beautiful. Her gift for capturing the essence of the Louisiana bayou and its Cajun people, adds a wonderful layer to this story. The characters are well-developed and the mystery is intriguing enough for adults. I felt for the lead character, Nikki Landry. Nikki is initially reluctant to make friends because her family has a history of moving. She does make friends, however, and hears of the legend of Ghost Dog Island. Nikki and her new friends decide to explore the island (because what kid wouldn’t?) and uncover pieces to a long ago mystery which may have started the legend. But when Nikki’s dog Snooper disappears, the legend becomes all too real for her. Nikki and her new friends are not only plunged into a mystery, but must find her dog before it's too late.

Without ever leaving the confines of my comfy chair, Rita Monette transported me back to Louisiana, circa 1956, and into 10-year-old Nikki Landry’s world. A carefully-crafted love story about a girl and her dog, Monette stirs up her brand of literary gumbo using unique smells and settings, while creating believable characters with a flavor of down-home dialogue. Add a spicy mixture of an old legend, topped with delectable mannerisms and savory Cajun slang, and you’ve got yourself one heck of a mouth-watering read for middle-graders through to adult.
The Legend of Ghost Dog Island would be a great addition in any classroom setting to learn and study about the history of the Cajun people, and life on the Louisiana bayous in mid-twentieth century. My stomach is already starting to grumble for Ms. Monette’s next installment.

Ten-year-old Nikki Landry lives in the same home she was born in, but she has moved several times each and every year of her life. She lives with her mother, father, and younger brother on a houseboat, and her father relocates them frequently as he searches for the best crabbing spots. Nikki hates moving. She no sooner starts making friends when she is uprooted once again. The latest move to a really mysterious bayou takes her from her best friend, Lydia, and forces her to start over yet again in a new school. If that weren’t enough, Nikki thinks she is being watched by something on a nearby island.
Rita Monette has spun a wonderful mystery based on the life of the Cajun people in Louisiana during the mid-1950’s. The reader is immediately drawn into life along the Bayou. The characters are believable, and the hardships of life aboard an old houseboat, where the family is living in poverty and the father is doing his best to keep things together, is portrayed with sensitivity and compassion. Monette details clearly Nikki’s trials as she tries yet again to adjust to a new school, make friends, and avoid a bully. Nikki’s bond to her beagle, Snooper, is shown as a vital element in Nikki’s life, providing companionship and stability through all the family’s moves. So when Snooper goes missing and there is a legend of someone on the nearby island stealing dog’s souls, the reader is right there, following Nikki into danger as she hunts for Snooper and tries to solve the mystery of the island with the strange howling sounds.
I really enjoyed this book and I think Monette has done an excellent job of capturing a time and place now gone. The issue of language, for instance, is shown as Nikki wants to learn Cajun French after hearing her father and others speaking it. This novel is set during the time when it was illegal to speak French in public. The laws changed in 1961, but for Nikki, learning French was like a forbidden fruit.
Monette also describes in mouth-watering detail the food that was common for the Cajun community. She uses a number of words common to this part of Louisiana as well, and she provides a brief glossary at the beginning of the novel defining the terms. I found that this technique of using a glossary first, but then letting the words flow naturally in the novel, was most effective. Monette’s own drawings scattered throughout the novel are most effective in showing Nikki’s world. I really think that Monette’s readers will find it easy to learn about the Cajun people as they read a suspenseful story with plenty of action. The ending ties things up a bit too neatly, but it is satisfying to have everyone sorted satisfactorily.
I think that this novel would be a fun read for anyone from middle-school upwards. It is a very good story in its own right. In addition, I could really see this being used in a classroom with the possibilities for many teaching moments.

The Legend of Ghost Dog Island is the story of ten year old Nikki Landry who has just shifted to a mysterious bayou full of tales of a mysterious werewolf and the unknown but very frightening howling sound that pierces the calm often here. Intrigued by the stories but also afriad, Nikki is trying to adjust to a new place when her beloved dog goes missing. Determined to find him, she will have to uncover the truth about the myths of the Ghost Dog Island first!
Is there really something mysterious and dangerous out there?
Are the myths true?
Where is her beloved beagle?
Can she find it before it's too late?>/b>
This book reminded me of Enid Blyton's mysteries that I really loved as a child and do even today. The cover and title is reminiscent of those old childhood favourites and because of this, I got attracted towards the book initially. Then the blurb had me captivated and eager to read the book!
This is my first book by Rita Monette and I loved her writing. She describes the bayou in a lively yet mysterious light and had me visualizing the eerie sounds and atmosphere there. The culture and lifestyle of people in 1950s who spoke Cajun French was a novelty to me and I thoroughly enjoyed their language, the intricate details about their lives in 1950s (time span in which the story is set) and salivated over the delicious sounding food. The author has included a glossary telling us about some Cajun French words and I loved knowing about a new language.
The characterization is reminiscent of the Famous Five, Secret Seven and other Blyton's bestselling mysteries. I loved Nikki. She is strong, inquisitive, daring, loyal and yet has the innocence I loved in my characters as a child. Her curiosity mingled with fear of the unknown over the mysterious happenings near her had me feeling like I was living each and every moment in the story with her. The thrill of trying to solve a mystery, the strength to take risks and the eagerness to know what happened next had me sitting at the edge of my seat throughout.
Nikki's family is sweet and I liked her father who told her stories of legends, myths and even some fiction just to entertain her! Her mother is strict and yet loving while her brother had me smiling at his cutesy, baby talk.
The sketches included in the book are lovely and added more appeal to the story. The whole atmosphere of mystery is maintained and the pace moderated admirably to keep the reader entertained.
All in all, The Legend of Ghost Dog Island is a lovely and very entertaining mystery that will be loved not only by children but also adults. 4 out of 5 to it and recommended to all Enid Blyton style mystery lovers. I loved the author's style and will be checking out her other books too. She is talented and an author you should checkout.
I received the book from the author and the tour organizers and I am very thankful to them. The above review is my honest and unbiased opinion and in no way influenced.

Nikki Landry is no stranger to moving. Her family moves whenever her father decides it's time for a new crabbing location, which is frequently. They live on a houseboat in the bayou of Louisiana, making the moves a whole bunch easier than if they lived on land. Except, it isn't easy for 10-year-old Nikki.
This time, she doesn't want to make any new friends. There isn't any point since they probably won't stay here for any length of time. That doesn't last long, however, after she hears the Legend of Ghost Dog Island. The island in question is quite near where her home is docked and she's sure that she's being watched by someone.
Nikki and her new friends are curious about the legend and the island, yet move folks are reluctant to speak about it. The kids decide, at that point, that the only way to see what's going on is to explore the island. It's only after their scarefest do they get someone to finally open up about the island, a convent, and long ago tales of suspected witchcraft. The legend becomes all to real when Nikki's dog, Snooper, disappears. In Nancy Drew style - Nikki and her friends go on the hunt for Snooper before he becomes part of the legend.
The Legend of Ghost Dog Island is a mystery geared toward middle grade children. That being said, it is also a perfect book for adults who love #MG, #YA, or #NancyDrew style books. I, for one, am a huge fan of Nancy Drew. My "About Me" section of this blog says it all :) I also have a picture of my late kitty protecting my Nancy Drew books.
Rita Monette does an excellent job bringing Nikki and her friends alive between the pages of this book. The world building is circa the 1950's and includes certain fashions (penny loafers, poodle skirts, etc.) of the time. As the book is based in the bayous of Louisiana, Rita includes dialect native to the area, along with characters who speak French. For ease of the reader, the beginning of the book contains a glossary, as well.
This book was well-developed (characters, mystery, plot) and written well. I was engaged from the very beginning and the entire story flowed. I would recommend this to anyone who has children that love mysteries and to all adults that do, too.
Review copy supplied to me at no cost in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Ten-year-old Nikki is sad because her father, a fisherman, has to move their houseboat to another town along the bayou where the crabbing is better. She meets Patti and Spike from the new school and hears the scary tale of a swamp creature that steals dogs’ spirits.
Nikki finds an old bottle containing a cryptic poem and a key, and notices lights coming from Ghost Dog Island. She and her friends explore the island and Nikki finds an old journal that the key opens. When her dog Snooper disappears, Nikki believes the swamp monster has snatched him and goes to the island to search, but meets the ghost living there

The Legend of Ghost Dog Island is geared toward middle grade but is also a quick, entertaining read for adults. The characters are well developed and Nikki drives the story with her wit, determination and her quest for the truth.
Less than two hundred pages, it has easy enough words to understand for a middle grader, yet the suspense and the addition of Nikki's dog will keep young readers enthralled as the story unfolds. While I was expecting the ending, there were a few unexpected twists and surprises that I enjoyed. The Bayou is richly detailed and gives authenticity to the setting. Recommend!

** I won this books on goodreads first reads.
I loved that this book was realistic. The wording was as if you really were in the 1950's. Nikki was a cute kid that had spunk and the story although written for kids did keep you in suspense and wanting to read the next chapter. I would read further storylines with the these characters if written. The author is a great storyteller.

Nikki Landry (the main character) is a terrific girl who lives in the Louisiana bayous with her parents and Snooper, her beloved beagle. She is a great character who is oh-so-normal in an fabulously unique way that is so unlike "everyday normal," unless you're a swamper, too. This is a delightful book!

Even though this book is middle grade adults will enjoy the story too. I enjoyed the main character Nikki and her adventures and endurance of not giving up to find her dog. The author describes the bayou in detail.

Nikki is an engaging character, who has moved once again. She is determined not to make any new friends because her family would just pull up their houseboat and move again. But she does make new friends and solve the mystery of the howling that comes from Ghost Dog Island.
She is one brave girl.

Even though this book was written for middle-grade readers, I found myself caught up in the mystery and spooked by many of its intriguing scenes. The story is well plotted, and I couldn’t guess what was going to happen, so it had me hooked to the very end. It takes place in 1956 in a bayou of Louisiana, and the author presents the setting and people authentically, which makes the story even more interesting. The beginning of the book lists the Cajun French words and phrases that are used in the book, and at the end of the book, presents a brief history of the language. I love novels that incorporate foreign language into the text, so I was pleased to see this. This is a great read for middle-graders who love mysteries and even for adults who loved Nancy Drew or Hardy Boy type mysteries as a kid.

Cute mystery story perfect for middle readers. Just enough (minor) scares and twists to make this an enjoyable and fun read. This is the type of book I would have loved to have found when I was in elementary school and I would definitely recommend it to anyone with children who love mysteries and/or dogs.
