A very insightful and brief book that I would recommend for even the non-bat mitzvah and non-Jewish faith readers. A great deal of the book talks about women through history, and even how a few women still managed to start the ripples of change in society. These are only a few though, and are those who are believed/known to be Jew themselves. Despite that, it is still a great way to delve into the history. For young girls, these women provide role models they can learn about.

I thought this would mostly be a book about the bat mitzvah ceremony and preparations, but it had a lot of Jewish women's history in it, too. I found it in the Juvenile section, but it's perfect for an adult. The fictional account of a girl's bat mitzvah ceremony in the chapter 'What's Going On Up There' was especially powerful.

Enjoyable and informative. Some of the stories were quite moving and, b/c Goldin is a western MA writer, some of the people she interviewed, I know! Though it's written to the bat mitzvah girl, I can't see any 13 year old reading it unless it is assigned.
