The only weird thing about this book is that if you don’t already know the words for 1 through 10 in the five languages, you have to look on the back outside cover to see what the languages are.
There’s English (in red), Spanish (in yellow), German (in green), French (in blue), and Chinese pronunciation (in black).
This is a fun book though. On every page 1 through 10 there are many objects and on each page their numbers correspond to the number being featured; there’s not just the typical single thing to count in counting books. It’s fun for kids to count the many things on each page. And, there’s one cute cat on each of the pages to find too.

Description: Meet the children from around the world as they teach you to count from 1 to 10 in five different languages.
Genre: Counting
Intended Audience: Ages 4 and up
Curriculum Connection: This book would be useful in cross curricular lessons as a way to integrate math and learning about global cultures. When the students are exposed to other cultures, they can learn not only the customs, but a little of the language. Numbers in other languages can be used in simple math equations and word problems that also apply cultural vocabulary that they may also learn. Additionally, artwork in the book appears to be a collage of construction paper that could be recreated by the children. They can use the book as a model to create their own multicultural scenes from real life or imagination using the artistic techniques from the book.
Personal Reaction: At first I was very turned off from the book as there seemingly was no story. Each page consisted or each number written in 5 languages. I thought there would be more text or sentences utilizing the numbers in different languages. Later when I looked up the intended audience, it became more apparent that this is for younger children. Also, this must be used with an adult, as there is no pronunciation guide. Children may have difficulty sounding out the words.
Assessment of Visual Appeal: The cover and all pages are full color from edge to edge of the pages. The saturation is full spectrum brightness and I believe that that includes the illustrator's interpretation of the multicultural aspect to the book. While each page only has a series of numbers as the text, the illustrator creates scenes on each page and an overall story as new characters are added on subsequent pages.
