S.P Cervantes lives in Orange County, California with her husband and three children, where she is a teacher. She enjoys spending time with her family, writing, reading, and running, but is always thinking of an idea for her next novel. The dystopian romance An Impossible World will be released on July 25, 2017. S.P. Cervantes is the author of the highly rated New Adult Romantic Fantasy series Secrets of Shadow Hill. “Always and Forever”, “The Prophecy” and “War of Wizards” are available now. S.P. Cervantes also has a contemporary romance series, A Broken Fairy Tale. “Dust to Dust" is the first book in the series, with "Wished Away" and "His Jar of Hearts" are the second and third books in this stand alone series.
First love – last love with a second chance in between. To some, the blurb may give the perception of a love triangle to this story. There was never one single moment within the pages of this story where I questioned any interaction between the main characters. For me, it was one-sided from start to finish. What I did find, however, was that the story takes on a bit of a fairy tale fantasy romance in some areas. Thus, readers may need to look through your view finder past a wee bit of Irish lore. Most of the book is told by Alexa, with a shorter point of view through Jamie’s voice, which gives it a bit more depth.
There’s a bit of suspense unhinged throughout the story as well. I’m always agreeable to a little intrigue mixed into the romance. And in the middle of it all stood one character – well make that two characters – that I found deplorable and beyond forgiveness. I just didn’t have it in me. Neither deserved one iota of sympathy in my opinion.
There’s turmoil and angst aplenty as you read this emotional roller coaster. S.P. Cervantes is a new to me author and one I’ll definitely keep an eye on. Her writing definitely captures the feelings associated with heartache in a variety of ways, along with the road to happily-ever-after.
I struggled with giving this book 3 stars. It was a good story, but...... hmmm.....I wanted to love this more than I did, but the predictability got to me. There were no surprises or twists, and I guess that's okay, but it was a little too predictable and I could see where it was going from the beginning.
Anyway, this was sort of a story within a story because Alexa is married to Michael, who is a workaholic (isn't that what they all say) and barely ever home. They have two children and ya know, when children are involved, it's difficult to do things without worrying about the ramifications on them. I felt like Alexa was a doormat at times.....and that pissed me off, but she did it for the sake of the kids right? Ugh!
So we get the present story of her marriage, but we also get a past story of her first love, Jamie, who was from Ireland and she had met him at camp. They had a whirlwind summer romance, decided to go to NYU together in the Fall, and then tragedy struck, and Jamie had to return home. And then nothing....that's right nothing. Jamie returned home and avoided all contact with Alexa. I must say, I did love the two stories going back and forth.
So, if you like a book that doesn't have much angst, that may be a little predictable, but overall is a good story, have at it!
I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review from NetGalley.
I want to start out by saying this book is the first I have read by S.P. Cervantes, and I was so enamored of this book I am sure it will NOT be my last! This book was amazing, and I do not say this lightly, I would have given this book a 10 if the rating system were different. Every now and then a book comes along that just touches you in so many ways and this was that book. Have tissues ready!
Alexa and Jamie met when they were both still in high school and they would see each other every year at summer camp. Jamie was from Ireland, and Alexa had always lived on the East Coast with her Mom and dad, until her mom passed. So it was always Alexa and her Dad along with a handful of wonderful friends she meets and keeps for her life!
Jamie was a handsome, popular and rugged young man, and he and Alexa fell in love hard and fast and they planned to spend the rest of their life together even though they were still very young. They even go to the same college and move in together. They have so much to live for, great friends, and though they are young they love like no other!
In their senior year in college, Jamie's father gets deathly ill and he has to go home. At first he still calls her every day! After a couple of months Alexa never hears from Jamie again, his last message was that he was not coming back and to forget about him. Alexa, is now broken and sad, and she loses all sense of herself. She has loved Jamie with an intensity that a lot of people never ever get to feel. Her friends are there for her to do anything for her but she is closed up in her grief.
Right before Alexa and Jamie split up, Alexa has a dream about having twin girls and she sees herself and Jamie and her Dad in the dream. On the other side of the world Jamie's Dad has been dying of stage 4 pancreatic cancer, and the day he dies when Jamie goes to see him he is very upbeat, and sitting up and he tells Jamie he is going to be with Jamie's mom and that he had a dream he was at the beach and he saw 2 little twin girls dancing in the surf and he and his wife were there, along with Jamie and Alexa. They then play a hand of cards and his father tires. Jamie leaves for awhile and his father passes away peacefully.
Years pass and now Alexa is married to a man she met after breaking up with Jamie and they have 2 young boys. They have been together for 12 years now. Mike loves Alexa and pulls her out of her lonely life and they marry and he promises he will always be there for her. Alexa tries to put Jamie in a box with the ring he had given her and forget about him and how he hurt her.
Alexa goes on with her life with Mike and she becomes the token wife. Mike is really successful and he moves them to California into a big house and she is now the wife and mother of his children. She tries to be upbeat and be happy with what she has, and for a while it is okay until slowly but surely things have changed. Mike is always gone and never has time for her, he claims it is work, but she knows otherwise. They both seek counseling and then Mike just quits going. All the trying is done on her part. Marriage is supposed to be a partnership with compromise on both parts to make it work and it has all been Alexa compromising.
Then Jamie comes back into her life, he is a multi millionaire, and has hired Mike to do the work on his new restaurant and he quickly sees what is really going on in Alexa's life. Alexa is so shocked to see him, and goes to speak with him, until Mike shoves her in a cab to go home, and then Jamie sees him hanging all over a blond! He is unbelievably shocked and pissed off at Mike. Alexa, in the meantime finds out Mike is cheating and she tries to forgive him but this time it is not going to work.
Alexa and Mike go for their annual trip to see her Dad and he leaves early, but not before they agree to a separation! A week later while still at her dad's house she is served divorce papers! Jamie hears about this as he also has been there and is supposed to meet Mike at the site of his new project there and Mike had not told him not to come! At this point there is no doubt in his mind he will leave Mike's company to do the work, but not for Mike but for Alexa.
Alexa takes her children home to the house and the unbelievable happens! As I am reading it I was thinking how unfair things are in her life and now she has suffered the ultimate betrayal-the promise from Mike long ago to love her, take care of her and put her above all others has not been fulfilled.
What happens to her next is shocking, life threatening and unforgivable. Jamie is beside himself and will not let Mike anywhere near Alexa, and we find out what actually happened all those years ago, with Jamie that caused him to not come back to the young girl he left years ago. One thing he knows now to be true, Alexa is going to belng to him.
Will Alexa ever be alright again? Will Jamie ever have love in his life? What will happen with Mike? Will there be closure on what happens with Alexa?
Read this book! I just know you will love it as much as I have. This book has great well developed characters, a plot that twists and turns and a shocking occurrence that NO one saw coming! It is filled with emotional angst, and love and betrayal. It is filled with regrets, and most of all it is filled with the hope that things will be better! Most of all is is a story about second chances.
I gave this book 5 stars and look forward to reading more by this author!
Marriage is never a 50-50 deal all of the time, but it should average out at the end of the day. For Alexa, “wife” was becoming a four letter word when it came from her husband’s mouth. She could feel him moving away from their commitment to each other and their family. As a “mother,” Alexa worked hard to hold things together, alone, but no matter what, she knows she is fighting a losing battle, from all of this; she has begun her own business, found her inner strength and respect and grown as a person. Just as she has given up and the truth of WHY her husband has lost interest, a voice from her past startles her back to the land of the living again.
There he stood, her Jamie, the one who vowed to always love her, right as he walked out of her life forever, leaving her crushed. And. He. Wanted. Her. Jamie wanted the girl he once had, he wanted the woman she had become, baggage and all. Now famous and wealthy, able to have any woman he wanted, the one that he let get away was there, and under her self-assured façade was the girl he knew so long ago.
Second chances are never easy and the lies and deceit begin to mount up as Alexa discovers what has happened to the man she married as the man he has become is unveiled. Will this scare Alexa off from trusting Jamie again? Will Jamie be the one who makes her smile from the heart and give her the life she has always wanted? First she must survive today before tomorrow can be made reality. S.P. Cervantes’ The Wife begins as a bleak tale of a woman nearly as broken as her marriage. Alexa is a powerful character, very much alive, very much a woman that can be identified with. Filled with painful pages, hopeful pages and pages that bring danger, not one was wasted in this deeply emotional read as S.P. Cervantes gives us reading that morphs from its cocoon into a beautiful butterfly.
There is more than romance here, there is a slice of life that will tug at your heart. Don’t miss this intense and thought –provoking read, as the characters come to life, flaws and all.

I’ve read and loved everything Ms. Cervantes has written. However, the word loved isn’t a strong enough word for what I feel for The Wife. The emotions and feelings the book evoked in me are truly some of the strongest I’ve ever had while reading any book. So get ready for the feels.
I am so honored to have been able to beta read this wonderful book for Susan.
Marriage is one of the hardest jobs in life, second only to maybe parenting. There is so much you have to put into a marriage to make it work and if you're the only person is putting forth the effort, it’s not going to last. When you realize that you’re the only one wanting your marriage to work you have a tough decision to make.
Alexa wasn’t necessarily unhappy being married but she was unhappy being “the wife”. A trophy on the arm of an important man, who was quick to send her away, before the end of a party, without a second glance or thought. At the most recent party, though, she heard an accented voice from long ago that once held promises of young love and a future of happiness.
Jamie had loved Alexa beyond words when they were younger, but he had to go back home to help take care of his family. Without an explanation, he let Alexa go thinking he was doing the right thing for her. Years later, though, Jamie realized just what he had let go and set out to find her while making his dreams come true.
Alexa had eventually moved on, met and fell in love with Mike. They married, had children, and Mike slowly fell away from his vows and his wife. How many of us get a second chance at happiness and true love? Not many but Alexa was presented with the opportunity to have just that. But does she take it? Are the feelings she feels now for Jamie real or are they leftover emotions and feelings from a long-ago love? She still loves Mike and worries about her family, will she keep fighting for her marriage or will she wave the white flag and admit it’s over.
Susan writes the story that pulls on your heartstrings and will make you feel the hurt, the pain, the angst, and the love. The characters she writes are as real to me as can be, they could be some of my closest friends. That’s how incredibly written the characters are. I loved that she had the wonderful gang from The Broken Fairytale Series in this book. It’s always so good to catch up with old friends, ya know!
Take my word for it, you need to read this thought provoking, heart wrenching, and soul searching book. You will absolutely love it!
Favorite Quotes:
~~ That voice. That accent. It’s Irish I think. It sounds like a voice that used to be able to make me feel like I was the most important thing in the world. A voice I haven’t heard in years. A voice that broke my heart.
~~ “My name is Jamie McCullen and I used to be in love with your wife.”
~~ Anything is possible when you don’t give up on love.
Second chance romances always leave me feeling conflicted because I honestly can't see how someone could be so in love with another person and not fight for them with everything that they have. Alexa is tired of being a trophy wife and mother. She wants something better than what she has. In comes Jamie, the one that got away. They are drawn back together and Alexa has to decide which relationship she wants. This is definitely a tear jerker book that will tug at every feeling that you have, especially if you've been in a similar situation. It hits home!
**Received an ARC in exchange for an honest review**
This book was phenomenal. This was about a woman who struggled with her feelings. She loved a man her young adult life and he broke her heart and she never thought she would recover. This Irish man that she met was the love of her life and she believed that he was her soul mate. But unfortunately some terrible circumstances has suddenly came up for Jamie and he had to leave the country and go back to Ireland. He lived with the guilt and pain after his mother passed away and didn't expect more tragic in his life, but when he gets a call that his father is very ill, he has no choice but to go back home. He has literally shattered Alexa's heart because he left her and decided not to come back for her.
Just when Alexa thought that she would never recover from her broken heart, a guy comes in and sweeps her off her feet and end up marrying. Alexa was over the moon with Mike and thought that maybe she was wrong about her and Jamie being soul mates. But then she discovers things about her husband years down the line in their marriage that leave her scarred.
At first Alexa really pissed me off because I felt like she was a doormat for Mike. She would let him do whatever he wanted with her and even though she had her suspicions about him, she would just let them go because she always thought that she was overreacting and she should just accept whatever it was that he did and play the dutiful wife role. But once she opened up her eyes and realized that he was an a$$ and not worth her time, that's when I started liking Alexa. She needed that boost of confidence and she didn't get it until she realized that she shouldn't have to accept what her husband was doing to her, the treatments he gave her and secrets he kept from her. She was better than that.
Jamie had a lot to prove to Alexa and he was willing to do whatever it took to get her back. He wasn't going to play this all wrong either, he would wait patiently for her even if it took the rest of his life until she realized that her husband wasn't worth her fighting for, then he would come in and try to win her back.
I totally and utterly enjoyed this story. It was very different from what I've been reading lately. There were times I wanted to scream at my kindle because Alexa would piss me off but when she became the brave woman that I new she was, I started rooting for her.
This wasn't your typical love story, it was pretty sad because even though Jamie was her childhood sweetheart, I thought at the beginning that maybe sometimes love with some people aren't meant to be and that she and Mike would end up working their differences out and stay together. But he was really a douche and didn't deserve her for how he behaved. So I am very happy with the way this story ended. Jamie really stole my heart because he was a true gentleman and was a patient man willing to wait to get the love of his life back, however long it took. Alexa believed in morals and she followed her heart and she really thought her heart was with Mike even though Jamie was back in the picture. She was willing to fight for her marriage knowing that it was crumbling down.
If you are looking for a unique story, then this book is a must read! Here you get a little of everything! Marriage, cheating scandals, mystery and second chance love. I mean, what more could you ask for???
Alexa is at a point in her life, where she is taking a step back to reevaluate things. Her marriage is on the rocks, her husband is "working" a lot of hours and never home. Alexa has feeling her is cheating. She is pretty much on point and her friends are letting her know they think she is right. She is a mom, a wife and a friend. Alexa feels like she could be more. She wasn't to see who she really is outside of those things.
Everything is about to change when Jamie walks back into her life. He was her first love and things didn't work out. Jamie went back home to Europe to deal with a sick and dying father, and time slipped away from them.
Now, in a crazy bunch of twist and turns, they end up back in each other's lives. This book was a roller coaster of a ride for me. Alexa's life is a mess. She has a story you might see on Dateline. It is more than a life she could have ever imaged. I don't know if I have ever hated a character more than I did her husband. He is a bottom feeder and the hatred I had towards him had my blood boiling.
Nut more than a sad story about a marriage that hasn't lasted, is a story about finding your true love again and making things better the second time around.
This second chance romance was nothing like I thought it would be.
The wife. The mother. The truth. I read this - The Wife's blurb and wasn't totally sure what Alexa's romantic adventure would be. I was intrigued and curious. Would she work things out with her husband or have a torrid affair?? I had no clue.
I was not prepared for the emotional journey that I took with the main character. It was like S.P Cervantes reached inside of my chest and gripped my heart - not letting go until the very end of the book. She captured and imprinted the feelings of one women's insecurity and her pain. I believe if the author wanted her reader's to truly experience Alexa's heartache and angst, she succeeded.
However by the time I finished reading, I felt that the strength of the book's plot was not about me feeling her heartache - it more about how I felt when Alexa realizes her own personal truths. When she allowed herself a second chance at happiness and love - it evoked such incredible delight in me. It made for an amazing story.
The Wife was just incredible. Honestly, absolutely fabulous. It has so much depth you just want to drown in the sea of feeling that it evokes – sadness, fear, hope, love, anger. I read the book in one sitting, desperate for the ending, hopeful it was what I wanted and needed from the story.
I honestly think all women have a little bit of Alexa inside of them, We all strive for that perfection that we deem necessary, which other people sometimes seem excessive or silly. The perfect husband, the perfect kids, the perfect house, the perfect kids….but what is perfect really? Alexa has lost her true self in her quest for this perfection and in the process also lost her marriage. What made this book so powerful for me was Alexa finding herself again, away from her no good husband. She finds her strength in becoming once again the person that she thought she had lost through the man disappeared from her life many years before. She also finds her inner strength to deal with what being a “different” woman means.
This book should be read over and over again. It is beautifully written story that touched my heart.
I was hooked into this story right from the 1st paragraph!! S.P. Cervantes's beautiful writing places me right into this story right from the beginning. The Wife is such a heartfelt novel that keeps you on your toes.
It's so easy to love Alexa and get lost in her story! She is so relatable. She thought she met the love of her life, sexy Irishman Jamie, until he left her broken hearted. Reluctantly she moves on with her life and marries Mike whom she spends a lot of happy years with. She loves him, but things change with Mike and their relationship is on the rocks. All of the sudden Jamie is back in her life. Tragedy strikes and Alexa is left fighting for her life. Who does she forgive? Who does she love the most? Who is she gonna spend the rest of her life with?
I had to devour this book!!! It made me cry sad tears and it made me cry happy tears!! I loved this book so much I will definitely be reading again!!! I absolutely recommend The Wife!! It's a story that should not be missed. I can't wait to read more by S.P. Cervantes.
I enjoyed the book. Too many times a women loses herself in a marriage and children. As a women we are the anchor of a family. Most households wouldn’t know what to do if mom was gone for more than a day. But what comes with that is the mom normally loses herself in it all. She is forgotten, taken advantage of. This was all so true in this book. Alexa became a nobody to her husband but someone to play the part. She did her duty and he wanted nothing more. This was a good book to see how someone can get out of that. How just because you feel like no one wants you that you can get out of that and move on and live life, where someone does adore you and does still see you as an individual not someone who is there just to do their duty. I normally love 2 POV but in this book I felt like it came too late and it just made it seem as if the book was being told repetitive instead of in both POV’s. I give this book 3.5 stars.
I would have given this more had it not been for the fact that the h, at times, came across as really stupid. For that alone I deducted 1 star. But I found myself wondering what I would have done, had I been in her shoes, so I went back to 5 stars. Then I remembered how much I hated Mike and his manipulative ways, that cost it 2 stars, but I felt guilty for deducting stars for feeling how the author intended me to feel, but not enough to put the 2 stars back, so give 1 back. So I was down to 4. What cost it the loss of another star was the lack of hurting I felt Mike deserved. I wanted him to be punished for what he had done to his family, to grovel and beg forgiveness, unfortunately I never got the satisfaction of justice being met. So as I was left wanting more my final score is 3 stars. Having only given 3 stars I can honestly say I enjoyed it, for the most part, and would definitely read other books by this author.
Have you ever felt that all you were to someone was a title? Like your kid's mom, or to your significant other you are just that title?
This book sums up that feeling fairly well. Is it a process that occurs over time? Or is it not being around the right people? You have significance and are more than just a title but a person. This is not my first book by S.P. Cervantes so I was ready for all the feels from the start. I knew my heart would break, her words know how to touch your soul.
It was another book that taught true love will prevail. When you break things down the can be rebuilt, and ALWAYS trust your gut. I again wish I could give her book more than 5 stars. It was nice to also see a glimpse at characters from her Broken Fairytale series, though you do not need to read those books to enjoy this book.
One of my most favorite tropes in the romance genre is a good second chance at love story. The Wife is the first book I've had the pleasure to pick up from S.P. Cervantes, and I'm going to be heading to Amazon to check out more of her writing.
I have recently been faced with some of my own marriage problems so there were a few parts of this book that really struck a chord with me. Imagining myself in Alexa's shoes, sympathizing with her character. I totally GOT this book. I felt for this woman and her situation. I wanted to give her a hug and give her husband a high five (in the face, with a chair).
The Wife made me contemplate and reflect. It made me mad, it made me smile and, it made me believe that that one true love will always find its way back to you.
Alexa fell for Jamie at college and when he has to return home to Ireland she marries Mike. I loved the story and the way it was written, but not so keen on being told so many times that Jamie has green eyes! What Alexa saw in Mike I don't know as he came across as having reptilian qualities - very unappealing. Alexa put up with an awful lot to try and keep her marriage going, so much so that she was a doormat for much of the time, but you couldn't help rooting for her! I enjoyed this book very much and look forward to reading more from this author. I was given this ARC by the publisher and Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
Alexa was independent, beautiful but a Biggest FOOL Her husband Mike was a liched 🤮🥶he was having sex with her therapist Dr Murphy and both of them Bullying her.. So many women at the parties.. still she closed her eyes 😬what a Shame.. The only best part was CJ her ex ,👏👏👏👏👏James who saved her
This is the first book I have read by S.P. Cervantes. I really enjoyed The Wife. When I read a teaser for it I just had to have it because it was my kind of book. It had all the angst you would expect from a female character who is in an unhappy marriage but will do anything to make it work for her children. At first, I thought it was going be just like other books I had read but it proved to be so much more. It was very well written into three parts which flowed at a pretty fast pace.
This story of everlasting love shook me to my very core. The characters at so raw and so real that I couldn't put this book down for a second. I had to know what was going to happy next.
The wife was very realistic and also emotional. Each person made you smile, laugh or even scream. Alexa was the perfect wife, the perfect mother and the perfect liar. All seemed fine in Alexa's life until her lost love comes back and her husband starts acting more and more secretive and far away.
I very much enjoyed this second chance love story, however it did remind me of the Dust to Dust storyline, which was a 5 star read for me so I didn't mind. However it did lose a full star because of what happened to Alexa as a result of Mike's actions. The consequences to her physically I feel were extreme and she didn't deserve it.
I really enjoyed this book. It was real life and I couldn't help but to keep following it. It captured my attention so I kept coming back for more. I would really love to see a POV of Mike. Or a story after regarding Mike!!
I got a kick out of reading this book it was surreal and was mysteriously unpredictable. Wonderful Job from an Author who I’m just now starting to follow. This is impeccable work !!!
I am not sure what I was expecting with this book, but that wasn’t exactly it. It dragged quite a bit as she talked about her cheating husband and how she is trying to save her marriage. The back and forth between past and present didn’t really fit and could have been summarized instead. Some predictably in this book and that’s ok.
Definitely not my favorite read. Although the story was interesting the pace of the story was off and the the characters lacked depth so I never got into it. And only finished because an unfinished book feels like failure to me.
