Chronicling the rise and fall of one of the 1980s most respected and beloved bands, the book lifts the veil on the creative processes and personal histories of a fascinating group of introspective musicians whose activities have frequently been shrouded in secrecy.

Reynolds, previously responsible for books on The Walker Brothers and Leonard Cohen, engagingly details the s

This book is a labour of love and luckily the lover in question is a passionate and talented writer.

The book is a detailed exploration of the band, its members and their transformation from suburban schoolboys to international stars. It's refreshing to read about Japan as a whole rather than the more common focus on the lead singer, the approach is even handed.

This is the best music biography I have ever read and I’ve read an awful lot, especially about artists and groups from this era in British music.

The attention to detail, input from so many different insiders with a variety of takes on events gives the narrative great depth, as does the wealth of photographs (insert your own Gentlemen Take Polaroids line here....) many of which were taken by fans or by Steve Jansen from the band himself.

Even though some parts were quite repetitive, there are interesting nuggets like the time they were banned from entering Singapore because they all had long hair. David Sylvian remains an enigma because after all he didn't participate in the writing of this book. The late Mick Karn shows his talent & sensitivity in the stories about him. These were beautiful people from an artful era & reading it to the end, it pains my ...more

A great overview of the career of the band Japan. From their start, to their recording/creating processes, to the end. A very well written book with lots of interviews and documentation.

We can really do without descriptions of female fans as "screaming female flesh", "wall-to-wall crumpet", "mini-harems", and particularly the uncritical quoting of a racialised description of Japanese fans as "looking mouth-wateringly cute with their uniformly black hair and dark eyes." (The wider feature it's quoted from is considered "humorous"....) Not to mention an assertion by the band's close associate that the "more teeny-bopper 15/16-year-old schoolgirl bunch" of their new UK fans come 1 ...more
