Woot woot! The science geeks are back this October, in the sequel/companion to The Avery Shaw Experiment! Wild and crazy Libby Garrett is taking her own journey and I can't wait for you guys to take it with her. I'm so excited for this book!!! Back in 2015 I read the first book The Avery Shaw Experiment. I did enjoy the book but it had it's flaws. I got an email from GR about the sequel (this book) and was surprised. Libby was one of my favourite characters and I was excited to read this. I immediately added it and then bought the e-book. I am happy to say that I liked this book!

It was good to see the Science Squad back, but there was no real plot. While The Avery Shaw Experiment was well-planned and executed, this one felt like an unnecessary addition. There was absolutely zero science involved, except for some unpronounceable scientific terms used as curses whose meaning no one knows and no one might even bother to find out. The Libby Garrett Intervention can be called the next book in the Science Squad series, though you can read it as a standalone. I do advice against that because The Avery Shaw Experiment is fantastic and you have to read it. This one follows Avery's best friend Libby, who I adored in TASE. Libby has changed in the last year and not for the better. Ever since this thing started with the popular, hot Owen. But it's not good for Libby because Owen only uses her for sex and nothing more. He refuses to be her boyfriend and avoids being seen together because Libby doesn't exactly have the "perfect" body. So Avery stages an intervention and does Libby's twelve-step program to get rid of her addiction to Owen starts and her sponsor is the sexy, stubborn Adam whom she calls Coffee Man. But she doesn't know that Adam has had eyes for Libby for a while and taking on this job as her sponsor may ruin his chances with her.

Before I start gushing about Adam, which is inevitable, I'll try to tell you about all the other things in this book. I love Kelly Oram and she never fails to disappoint me. So of course the writing was amazing, it always is. Kelly once again reaffirms why she is one of my favorite contemporary authors. She knows how to go from a light and fluffy mood, to swoony or dead-serious in a heartbeat. And this one has all of it. Serious, heartbreaking moments that made me tear up, light and fluffy ones that made me laugh and giggle and so much swoon that my heart almost couldn't take it anymore. Honestly, I think Kelly deserves way more attention for her novels. If you're a contemporary fan, please check out one of her books. Start with this series or Cinder & Ella or V is for Virgin. They're all so amazing and so very underrated.

Now the characters. I always love the characters in Kelly's books. She just knows how to make them feel real. I want to be friends with these characters. Laugh and cry with them. It was awesome seeing Avery and Grayson again and the other members of the Science Squad, and they I hope get their own books too! I loved Libby's parents so much, they were so awesome! Especially her dad. I loved his bromance with Adam, whom I'll get to in a bit. I also loved Kate, Adam's sister. Libby... I had a bumpy road with her. She made a lot of bad choices at first but she redeemed herself over the course of the novel and in the end I do love her. But she did have to win me over and that took a while. Now.. ADAM! Gosh, how can I even begin describing this guy? He's so imperfectly perfect. I loved him right away and I just fell for him, hard. By the time I was halfway through this book I was really struggling to root for the romance because I just wanted to jump into the book and steal him for myself. (Though I did root for it and it was amazing!) I could gush about him for ages, but I'd rather you pick up this book and discover for yourself how amazing he is.

The Libby Garrett Intervention is another home-run for Kelly Oram. Combining swoony, heartfelt and fluffy moments with heartbreaking ones that make you tear up or just full-on cry, this book is a YA Contemporary must-read. Go discover the awesome that is Kelly Oram, now!

Was ich nicht verstehen konnte, das war das Verhalten ihren Mitmenschen gegenüber, von dem der erste Teil des Buches geprägt ist. Genau dieser Teil wird es sein, an dem das Buch scheitern würde, wenn man es nicht mag. Allerdings ist The Libby Garrett Intervention die Geschichte einer jungen Frau, die erneut zu sich selbst findet und dabei auch lernt, was Liebe ist.
Adam ne... Adam. Adam ist einfach... ARGH. Eigentlich ist er viel zu überperfekt, weil er so rücksichtsvoll mit ihr ist. Ich hätte sie manchmal am liebsten GESCHLAGEN, aber er? Gott... Adam lässt einem das Herz bluten, gerade auch weil man hier auch seine Sicht hat.
Ich finde es übrigens gut, dass es hier mal eine übergewichtige Protagonistin gibt, weil sowas... ist halt sehr sehr sehr sehr sehr sehr sehr sehr selten. Allerdings wurde diese Tatsache irgendwie wieder zerstört, weil Libby ist ja krank und nur deshalb ist sie dick. Also Kelly Oram: Wenn schon denn schon! Allerdings konnte sie so diese ganze "ungesund" Debatte umgehen. Das Buch ist dadurch auch weder so ausgerichtet, dass Übergewicht irgendwie verharmlost wird, noch dass Libby sich verändert, so wie das in den meisten Geschichten der Fall ist. Ich finde, dass die inneren Konflikte unheimlich gut transportiert wurden, frage mich aber, ob manche, der nie mit Übergewicht zu kämpfen hatten, Libby als Protagonistin nicht manchmal etwas nervig finden würde. Ich kann mir vorstellen, dass einige ihr Verhalten gegenüber Owen nicht nachvollziehen werden, weil es selbst mir schon echt schwer gefallen ist.
Insgesamt ist es aber nicht Libby selbst, die das Buch gut machte, sondern Adam, weil er... er ist halt einfach Adam und Adam ist toll xD Hab ich schon erwähnt, dass er Skater ist? Und dass er sich um seine kleine Schwester kümmern muss? Achja...
Was ich auch sagen muss, dass es in dem Buch deutlich mehr um Sex geht, als noch im ersten. OHNE dass es hier tatsächlich Sexszenen geben würde. Das klingt jetzt echt seltsam, aber Libbys Beziehung mit Owen ist (zumindest für ihn) eher körperlich und in vielen Gesprächen, die sie während ihres "Entzugs" macht, geht es daher auch viel darum. Zu Beginn dachte ich, das ganze würde ins Erotische gehen, aber wie bereits gesagt: Keine Sexszenen. Es gibt auch gerade mal nur ca. 3-5 Kussszenen.

Insgesamt vergebe ich so 3,5 Sterne, einfach weil das Buch an so vielen Stellen auch einfach lustig war xD Das pupsende Einhorn in Libbys Zimmer ne... Und ihre Katzenshirts... Einfach alles. Trotzdem gab es auch einiges, was mich gestört hat und ich kann nicht sagen, ob ich das Buch nicht schlechter gefunden hätte, wenn ich es zu einem anderen Zeitpunkt gelesen hätte. ...more

There are some fantastic messages in the book around self-esteem; not entering relationships for the wrong reasons; the importance of friendships; and finding your niche in life, among them.

For me, this book was just SO sexual. There were no outright sex scenes but the whole book is just full of talk about sex, innuendo, and more talk about sex. "So basically, just burn EVERYTHING that reminds him of you, put your clothes away... nah, the hell are you talking about, just put them in the freaking trash, what do you mean some people could really use the doNATION?!" continued the Nice Guy TM. "Also, basically, get rid of stuff reminding him of you and why don't you replace them with stuff reminding you of me? heh? goes perfectly with your plan to get another boyfriend! And with my plan to get you to be my girlfriend! Except don't get another boyfriend. You need to want me for ME not because you want a relationship!" he continued.

The main heroine felt left out. "Okay listen, I like really really really like you, but listen, he, like, listen, he's here in limo, he's got reservations at a restaurant, listen, like, the prom is all that, ya know, the best day of my life, listen, sorry, I know we got plans for a date, but, like, sorry, gotta go, don't do anything I wouldn't!!" she said while prancing away with her ex-douchebag.

"Thant's okay," said the Nice Guy TM when she came back to him after realizing her ex is, in fact, a douchebag. "U made a mistake, I forgive you, no fuss, what do you mean you screwed up, I thought rainbow shone out of your bottom?!" he exclaimed in horror.

"also, your dad basically made me a pro skateboarder CAN you imagine my future was so BLEAK i was supposed to work at coffe shop for the rest of my life, the HORROR and suddenly i will go to COMPETITIONS and everything's worked out! And I got the girl! Kelly Oram is an incredible writer. She draws me into her books and I love her characters and especially love her sense of humor. The Libby Garrett Intervention was a fun read that I thoroughly enjoyed.

Honestly I'm one who prefers my books clean and this one was not a clean read. There was language throughout and lots of talk of sex. Libby and Owen's relationship is all about sex but there are no actual sex scenes and not a lot of details other than you know that they sleep together often. The ...more

So I really REALLY love the first book in this series, and all the other books of Kelly's.

But I didn't care for this one. First of all, not trying to slutshame here, but if the shoe fits... Also, to say that she was addicted to sex or Owen or whatever is ridiculous. I really liked where this book went and I'm very happy I picked up this series. I wish I could award this the full 4 stars but alas, 3.5 stars is my rating. Still a very good rating for a very good book.

I honestly never would've read this book series without the recommendation so again, thank you Mandy. Even though a lot of this book is very YA and doesn't have a lot of the maturity I've seen in other YA contemporaries, there is still a lot to respect about this book and about Kelly Oram's writi I really liked where this book went and I'm very happy I picked up this series. I wish I could award this the full 4 stars but alas, 3.5 stars is my rating. Still a very good rating for a very good book.

First I just want to say that I feel like her writing vastly improved between this book and the previous book so that already pleased me. But what I love about her writing and what she's done in this series is that she has tackled a very serious issue but has masked it in a way that it's easier to understand and process. She talked about unhealthy relationships and codependent relationships a bit with Avery Shaw but I think a lot of that book was more focused on her experiment and the humour in that. But with Libby Garrett, the message about abusive relationships was so clear that it nearly floored me. I never expected to see that happen in this book, let alone in this type of YA, and I couldn't be happier. Sure, she followed the same formula by making this a fun experiment and being inspired by a 12 step program, but I feel like the message was important nonetheless. I love how the emotional side of abuse was explored and even explained in full detail so not only Libby could understand what her situation was but so readers could understand what it meant and be able to see the signs if they or someone they know end up in the same situation. I'm glad Libby's friends cared about her enough to intervene and want to help her understand what's been happening to her. And seeing her go through her program and understand everything she's been doing, making all the effort to change her behaviour and get back to her old self, was amazing and admirable. I like that Adam helped her but there were times where I wasn't that into Adam because of how he spoke to Libby and I get he's honest to a fault and his emotions kind of clouded his "impartiality" but he just didn't end up being the guy I thought he would be. He's fine, just not the right kind of male character for me. And I know I said I loved how Grayson crushed on Avery first and how that's rare, but I didn't like how Adam crushed on Libby first. I loved how he thought of her (most of the time) and built her up when she tore herself down, but I feel like he could've been more. Or maybe Grayson just set the standard so high. Anyways, I still very much enjoyed this book and loved the countless messages that Oram weaved throughout the story and I'm pretty impressed. I'll definitely pick up another Kelly Oram book in the future. She's a good one. ...more

Based on the blurb, I knew that Libby is a character from Oram’s other popular book The Avery Shaw Experiment which I’ve never read so I was wondering if I should or could skip that and jump into Libby.

I’m glad I did.

The Libby Garrett Intervention is a stand alone book dealing with losing and finding oneself. Libby is a not so typical teenage female protagonist. She is overweight, nerdy and sarcastic (oh I love that trait the most. All these make her so relatable to me personally because I am all these myself so 2 points for Libby). The problem with Libby is that she is addicted to a living, breathing drug, Owen, a gorgeous jock who wants nothing more from her than hook ups. Or as a character on the book says, Owen treats Libby like a prostitute he doesn’t have to pay.
Enter Adam, otherwise known as the Coffee Man. He is a close friend and co-worker of Libby’s best friend Avery. A tattoed high school dropout with problems of his own. The thing is, he has always had a thing for Libby, so seeing her change from a confident and funny person to a desperate, I-can’t-NOT-have-sex-with-Owen is more than he can take. One public indiscretion by Libby and Owen sends Adam to suggest staging an intervention for Libby.

A 12 step program is not exactly a good way to start a relationship, but it is a great way to end one and to make Libby see what she has become with Owen, and in the process, it helps Libby realize that she is not as unlovable as what she has believed herself to be. Addiction though is tough to beat. Will she keep going back to her personal version of crack (Owen)? Or move on to the person who can help her get her old self back?
One thing I love about Libby is her wisecracking ability. She is smart as a whip and can dish it out like nothing else. The character is LOL funny with a side of sexy. Yes I said sexy. She is beyond chubby (based on the description and the beautiful picture on the book cover) but she is pretty (Again based on the cover model and descriptions in the book). The thing is, I understand perfectly her need to be the object of such adulation from a beautiful man and her need for acceptance. After all, she grew up bullied for how she looked her entire life so having the attention of a popular jock is like a dream come true for her.

I like how Oram settled the issue with NOT making Libby change physically. She didn’t make Libby go on an exercise spree to lose weight, nor did she write the story as if being Fat is the reason for her problems. In other words she didn’t resolve Libby’s dilemma with a miraculous “ugly duckling turned into a swan” angle. Oram made sure the readers would understand that the problem here is WHAT Libby thinks of herself….and it’s not a lot. Libby put so much stock on being unlovable because she looked a certain way, she overlooked the fact that she is beautiful in every other way. Fat is just fat. In the end, it is how we are as people and how we treat others that define us. And Libby realizes that with the help of wonderful and supportive Adam.

Oram didn’t make Adam the typical gorgeous, Edward Cullen type of guy. He is the anti thesis of a male protagonist: drop out, tattoed teenager, skinny and thinks himself a loser. My heart immediately went out to him. Adam gets Libby because he has been through the same nightmare of addiction albeit indirectly. He is, in his own way, the perfect hero. Libby’s hero.

This is a good read with a huge helping or sarcasm, wit and laughter. If you’re up for a book that will make you want your own Coffee Man, if not just your own coffee, then read this. Now excuse me while I go get a tall drink of Frapuccino.

I absolutely loved the first book in this series, The Avery Shaw Experiment. It was a light, fluffy read without a lot of substance, but it was super cute, and I really enjoyed reading the story. With The Libby Garrett Intervention the story moves to Avery's best friend, Libby, a smart, sassy girl who struggles with her weight and the resulting destructive behaviors in which she engages due to self esteem issues. While Avery uses the stages of grief to try and overcome a nasty breakup, Libby is I absolutely loved the first book in this series, The Avery Shaw Experiment. It was a light, fluffy read without a lot of substance, but it was super cute, and I really enjoyed reading the story. With The Libby Garrett Intervention the story moves to Avery's best friend, Libby, a smart, sassy girl who struggles with her weight and the resulting destructive behaviors in which she engages due to self esteem issues. While Avery uses the stages of grief to try and overcome a nasty breakup, Libby is encouraged to participate in a 12 step program in order to break free of an abusive relationship with a super cute and talented college guy who refuses to acknowledge Libby in public.

I loved the concept of this novel. It was nice to see a main character who wasn't the stereotypical beauty type found in so many YA novels. Libby was an interesting combo of strength and confidence in some areas of her life and complete lack of esteem in other areas. She had potential as a character. The theme of loving yourself enough to demand that others treat you with respect and kindness was a great theme. But it didn't quite work for me as a whole in this second book of the series. The Libby Garrett Intervention lacked the cuteness that helped the first book to earn its five stars. I could see that Kelly Oram was reaching for cuteness in several instances with Libby's cat obsession and use of Latin terms to replace cuss words. But it didn't quite work. It was a nice enough story, but it didn't really have the elements that could help it to rise above any number of fluffy, light YA books.

The truth? I REALLY didn't like Libby most of the time. I hate to say that, but it is true, and it affected my reading experience. I understand that Libby is in the middle of some ridiculously self destructive behavior because she struggles with how others perceive her and her weight. She doesn't expect anyone to ever really love her for who she is, for someone to see her as beautiful outside and inside, so she just hangs on to the one jerk that uses her and abuses her. She is terrified that that is as good as it will get for her. I get it. I feel for her, and I really did root for her to succeed and get this moron out of her life. But, oh man!, some of Libby's actions were so infuriating. In my opinion her actions on her prom night were borderline inexcusable. They were not the sort of actions that only need a quick "I understand and forgive you" conversation. No. Her actions that night were just plain awful, and I had a really hard time forgiving her for them. I'm sure much of my feelings can be directly tied to my older age, but I don't think that I would want for a young adult woman to mirror Libby's choices throughout most of this novel.

The best redeeming part of this novel is Adam, the high school dropout who has loved Libby from afar for years. His story was fascinating, and I LOVED how he interacted with Libby. He was a straight talker who didn't allow Libby to see herself as unlovable. He called her out when she was being ridiculous, and he was quick to offer his support whenever Libby would fall back into her terrible ways. He wasn't Mr. Perfect. He had his own issues to overcome. But because he had struggled in his life he was uniquely qualified to help Libby become her best self. I loved his character.

This was a quick book to read, and it did keep my interest. The overall themes of the story were great, and it is super important that people of all sizes love themselves enough to demand to be treated well by those who surround them. I didn't end up loving this as much as I loved the first one, but I'll still give it three stars. I liked it. ...more

Owen, may be "all that" on the basketball court, but he's been hooking up with Libby on the super down-low for a year now. He's never met her parents, never gone out on a date with her, and won't even accept her social media friendships. He even arranges hotel stays for their trysts to keep Libby out of his dorm room.

In the past year, Libby has changed her wardrobe--eschewing her witty cat t-shirts and jeans for (unflattering) lycra and mini-skirts. She's flaked on all her friends, multiple times, and hurt their feelings. Because, when Owen calls, Libby answers.

Her besties, Avery and the rest of the Science Squad stage an Owen intervention, mediated by Adam--Avery's tattooed skater manager at the coffee shop. Adam's had a hard life and he knows all about addiction, thanks to his mother's alcoholism. He is the legal guardian for his younger sister, and sacrificed his high school diploma in order to work enough to support them both. He's always had a crush on Libby, but he's disappointed to see how her personality has changed since Owen arrived.

Libby wants nothing to do with the intervention, or Adam, but a week after some hard truths, she decides to try. Adam and Avery continue to tell her that she's worth more than Owen's leftovers, but it's hard quitting him cold turkey. Libby's never had a boyfriend, and doesn't fell worthy of love due to her weight problem. Still, she wants her friendships back, and healthy, and she's tired of being a booty call. Adam agrees to be her "sponsor" and their close proximity brings Libby to a place she never anticipated.

This is a refreshing YA romance. Adam's such a decent guy, and Libby begins to see herself as more than a "fat" girl. Her self-image has been low for a long, long time, and it's hard for her to accept compliments, especially from Adam. Adam tries to guard his heart, but he's a goner for Libby. That said, he's not trying to make moves on her. He's hoping that she'll find the strength to love herself, and then (hopefully!!) him.

Expect the usual slow bond and misfire scenario. Owen's not eager to give up his feisty kitten, and he regularly tests Libby's resolve. I totally enjoyed the slow burn between Libby and Adam, and I felt that Libby learned a lot about herself, and friendship, in this story. Some grand gestures and humorous situations kept the pace rolling along. There's only kissing on the page, though we know Libby is a sexually active teen. There's a real HEA here, for both Libby and Adam, who are great characters to tag along with. It's a dual POV story so we get to peek inside both Libby and Adam's brains. A real treat! ...more
