Volcano
An island people are fighting for their lives. La Palma's Cumbre Vieja has erupted - soon ash and lava will annihilate everything, unless the locals can destroy the volcano first. A desperate group set out, armed with high explosives.
Three thousand miles away across the Atlantic Ocean the peaceful seaport of Goodwill, Maine is getting ready for its annual summer festival, Founder's Day. 9 books10 followersI'm a fiction writer trying to break away from typecasting. For a while I was focusing on disasters, books like Flood and Volcano - London threatened by a storm surge, an eruption-caused tsunami devastating the coast of Maine.
I could have gone on with the theme - publishers always want more of the same and Flood had made it into a movie - bit I couldn't face it. So I'm back to straight thrillers with MUTE, out now on amazon kindle. It's about a little guy taking on the big ones. Nothing earth shattering, just a simple story of a fellow who doesn't give up when threatened.

Hard to say which was the most fun. I married a girl who likes travelling and she's usually planning where to go next. Any suggestions welcome. If any of you decide to stray on to my amazon kindle entry, you'll see I've put Imperial 109 out there too. It's a novel I wrote in 1978 about a flying boat service between South Africa and America. It sold a million copies.

This is an ok book, for me though too many characters and situations to follow. I did not need drawn out descriptions on Volcanoes via scientists, boats and submarines.

No está mal el libro. Por supuesto, no es una obra de la literatura universal, pero sí un buen ejemplo de "novela de desastres naturales", es decir, una novela para pasar un buen rato y poco más.
El autor no abruma al lector con datos demasiado científicos e ininteligibles, pero ha realizado una buena investigación que va introduciendo a lo largo de la historia y hace la novela totalmente verosímil.
Los personajes están muy bien caracterizados y cada cual, ya esté encargado de "trabajar" para la trama principal o para alguna de las subtramas, representa perfectamente su papel, no sólo en cuanto a lo que la historia requiere, sino también inmerso en su propios problemas personales que dan la novela ese toque de vida real que a mí, personalmente como lectora, me gusta mucho.
Cuatro estrellas, pues, porque es un buen libro para pasar un rato bastante entretenido.

Este libro me costó terminarlo. Por un momento quise dejarlo, pero soy de las que no les gusta hacer eso y decidí llegar hasta el final de esta historia.
El libro nos narra, como lo dice su nombre, la erupción de un volcán, concretamente el de Cumbre Vieja, en La Palma, Islas Canarias. ¿Les parece conocido?
A lo largo de la trama vemos cómo la vida de varios personajes, unos que viven en dicha isla y otros en Maine, Estados Unidos, transcurre en aparente calma hasta que, a causa de una explosión del volcán, un gran tsunami de más de 30 metros amenaza con acabar con la ciudad (concretamente con un pueblo de Maine).
Me parece algo tedioso y debí detenerme varias veces a consultar términos porque usa muchos tecnicismos propios de navegación e incluso algunos científicos, en los que se detiene en demasiadas explicaciones. Además, va demasiado lento y en ocasiones me parece muy Hollywoodezco.
No es un libro malo, pero sí debe leerse con calma y con un diccionario a mano. Y el final… demasiado sencillo para mi gusto.

Volcano gets a generous three stars. The plot keeps you going until the end, the characters on the whole are interesting enough and the promise of "the wave to end all waves" is indeed intriguing enough. However, depite having the right components, Volcano is just an run-of-the-mill action book, with all the pre-requisite Crichton-esque if-it-can-go-wrong-it-will-go-wrong beauty. It would be far more palettable if the book wasn't 200 pages too long. There are too many characters who just don't need to be there. Remove a quarter of those and you'd get a tidy, gripping, action yarn. Instead you get Volcano, which incidentally, should really be called Tsunami. It's entertaining, but just too cumbersome.

Nach "Der Schmelze" war ich gespannt auf ein Buch, was dort am Ende empfohlen wurde.
Leider habe ich zuviel erwartet. Das von den Geologen schon lange vorhergesagte Erdbeben auf den Kanaren, erweist sich als von Menschen verursacht und die erwartete Tsunami an der Ostküste der Vereinigten Staaten läuft auch noch glimpfig ab.
Alles in allem werde die Folgen eines solchen Erdbebens verharmlost. Sogar für die Schiffe, die in unmittelbarer Nähe der Kanaren sind.
Obwohl der Autor schon eine gewisse Spannung aufbaut, kommt auf der Hälfte des Buches die Frage: "Wann passiert dann nur wirklich was unerwartetes.
Scheinbar hat Doyle sich dann doch nicht getraut, die wirklichen Folgen für die Welt zu beschreiben und so läuft dann alles relativ harmlos ab.
Ein Buch um mit in Urlaub nach La Palma zu nehmen und es danach dort zu vergessen.

This was a pretty good example of the "disaster" books that I like. I like movies of this genre as well but with movies I like to make fun of the questionable science. For whatever reason I don't do that as much with books. This book didn't have any overly laughable science and seemed well researched in that sense. The back and forth across the Atlantic storyline was compelling and it was scary enough, in light of recent real disasters, to contemplate "what would happen if..."
Not a life changing book by any means but it was a good read and went by quickly. The only thing that bugged me were occasional editing errors - like typos or the wrong word here and there... seemed strange but maybe it's just automated spell checking problems.

Really easy to read this book but i found the characters Malc and Concha, the scientists in overall to be far, far more interesting than Rick, Natalie, those ridiculous surfers and everything that happened at Goodwill from the beginning until the disaster actually happened. I love books and movies of natural disasters, but in this book there are many pages that can be skipped without losing the thread of the plot.
