Pope Francis' Little Book of Wisdom

Rate this book
Pope Francis appears to be changing the face of Roman Catholicism. He has infused what some consider a staid institution with openness and optimism. He has faced off against established power interests within the Vatican. He has reformed the Church’s finances. And, most importantly, he has asked that Catholics approach one another and non-Catholics with candor, humility, and love. He has made the papacy and the Church relevant once again.

A pope of the people, Pope Francis’ teachings have been praised and shared by the faithful and nonreligious alike. Exploring themes such as faith and prayer, love and family, peace and poverty, this collection is accessible to all who admire the man and are inspired by his wisdom. Included in this gift-format edition are fifteen chapters on wide-ranging topics including:

On Family
On the Law of Love
On the Nature of God
On Humility and Faith
On Sacrifice and Suffering
On Prayer
On Peace

It's an excellent little book! Imagine how much bigger and what more diverse passages it could have had if just published a little later in his late pontificate?

the quotes are real, but they lack citation of the primary sources, so that's my only critique. You'd have to go verbatim type out the quotes to find it in an angelus, general audience, or other writing.

I used this book devotionally, reading 2 pages a day to start my morning devotions. I found it uplifting and challenging. As a Lutheran pastor I found hope that one day we might again be one Body of Christ in that there was very little in Pope Francis' theology that I had trouble with.

Pope Francis’s comments, reflections, and advice encourage a closer relationship with the Church, but especially with some of its core values, such as fraternity, solidarity, and humanity — expressed in a simple, approachable, and gentle language.

I believe there are several ways to read this book (sequentially or at random, for example), and several ways to interpret each of its teachings. Even so, it struck me as a book very much oriented toward religious practice and toward one’s relationship with the Church — about being a practicing Christian.

"We are living in an information-driven society which bombards us indiscriminately with data - all treated as being of equal importance - and which leads to remarkable superficiality in the area of moral discernment. In response, we need to provide an education which teaches critical thinking and encourages the development of mature moral values."

***

I love Pope Francis!!

Pope Francis is a breath of fresh air in not only the Catholic Church but in all churches. He is a breath of fresh air to all people! I love that he teaches us that it is not our job to judge each other but to love each other! Not to be concerned with correcting other but to be concerned with loving them. To look at the log in our own eye and try to remove that. To leave the job of removing the speck in the eyes of others to God. It is his job not our!! I cannot say enough good things about Pope Francis. His message is so simple and yet it is not easy. I feel he teaches the message of Jesus in today's world. I like the style of the book because it's messages are presented in small sections so you can read just a little and come away with very valuable food for thought. I would give it 6 stars if I could.

Pope Francis' Little Book of Wisdom contains quotes and words of wisdom by Pope Francis, the current Pope. These quotes are compiled into this "little book" by Andrea Kirk Assaf. Each page contains a different quote and the book is divided into 12 parts each touching on a different topic. Pope Francis has a lot of important messages to pass along, and many are contained in the book. I'm glad I got the opportunity to read it, and plan to pass it along to a friend. When I get it back, I plan to pick it up and read a little each day. Thanks to the author and Goodreads for this book!
