"Heart of the Season" is the second book in the Loving Hearts series by a Goodreads friend of mine, full disclosure. I can honestly say that I enjoyed this novella outside of being friends with the author. I can't say what I loved more, the hero, Zachary, an Afghanistan US Marine war vet or his dog, Akilah. Well honestly, their relationship is at the heart of this story. Julianna is clearly an animal lover, and she understands the power of the human animal bond. How having a pet can add so much ...more

I thought this book was quick paced and enjoyable. What I particularly didn't enjoy was how quickly the romance developed, while it wasn't Insta love it was close, maybe insta lust, but the romance spans over a month and they only see each other in the flesh for one day through the duration of This novel. While the love between the characters was genuine and believable I just couldn't overlook the time it developed over. I thought each character was likeable there wasn't a single charac

I'm the author of this book. It's a new adult, contemporary romance and the second installment in my Loving Hearts series.

My hero, Zach, is a Marine who's been through a lot in his twenty-four years, most recently losing a leg to an IED blast while serving in Afghanistan. More important to him, though, was waking up in the hospital and learning that his furry best friend, Akilah, had been left behind. He longs to bring her home to Phoenix for Christmas but keeps running up against brick walls un
The second book in the Loving Hearts series by Julianna Douglas. Zach West is back in the states after being injured in Afghanistan. He lost a leg and is scarred. Now he is determined to find the dog who saved his life. But there were rules about dogs. Number one was don't get attached. Jeannie Montgomery is over in Afghanistan, running an animal shelter and she may be Zach's last chance in finding his dog, Akilah.

So most of the story takes place with Zach in Phoenix and Jeannie in Kabul. They c

Kleenex needed with this one, especially if you have a soft spot for animals... heroic dog/Kiki. Very sweet insta-love Christmas fairytale romance between a wounded Marine/Zach and an animal rescue miracle worker/Jeannie. A feel good heartwarming, emotional (sniff), story with a harlequin edge.
What a wonderful story! I really enjoyed hearing about animal rescue and adoption in the Middle East, and certainly agree its so necessary to our soldiers' mental health. Nicely written, and I look forward to reading more from this author.

A little too sweet and unrealistic for my tastes - insta-love is one of my pet peeves. Though I did like the animal rescue plot.

To the women reading this, I called dibs on Zach first!

Heart of the Season is by far my favorite of the Loving Hearts series. The story of a wounded veteran trying to find the dog he befriended in Iraq and finding love along the way—what isn’t there to like? Answer: nothing! In my review of His Heart’s Desire, the first book in the series, one of the issues I had was that the main male character was too perfect, but in this book Zach is anything but perfect. He is insecure, scarred from head to

Hearts of the Season is the second book in the series by Julianna Douglas. This is a heartwarming entertaining story of a wounded marine, his dog and the woman who brings them back together. It will warm your heart and is full of Christmas miracles. Douglas has the amazing abililty to entice her readers from page one and you will not be able to put this book down. Zach and Jeannie are perfect together for they are both truly innocents. Even though this book is fiction it brought to light the dif ...more

What a wonderful story! Zach a wounded military man on the search for his dog who was left behind in Afghanistan. When he meets the Montgomery family who put him in touch with Jeannie who rescues animals in Afghanistan. Follow their story and see for yourself why this is such an amazing read! This story pulled me in right from the beginning and I couldn't put it down till I finished it. It has it all! The feels, romance, a little danger, and of course dogs! Loved it!

This is a love story beginning in Afghanistan. With dogs that have attached themselves to soldiers and a organization that tries to send them home together if possible. I loved the story until at the end you tried to turn a serious relationship into a sex book. The detailed sex at the end ruined the book for me. Nothing was said about marriage. Sorry, I know this is just my opinion.

Zach is a wounded warrior trying to find the dog who saved his life in Afghanistan. When he reaches out to Jeannie, she makes it her mission to reunite Zach with his dog. Through Skype, Zach and Jeannie form a friendship that slowly turns into something much more. A lovely book filled with all the feels and a build-up of chemistry that doesn't disappoint.

I love military romance stories!!! Zach has lost his leg over seas and wants the dog that was with him over there. He gets in touch with Jeannie. Jeannie communicates with him online and is trying to get his dog home for Christmas.

It was a tear jerker for me but I absolutely loved it and couldn't out it down. I love military romance and wounded warrior stories!!!

This was such a beautiful heart breaking story of a marine who had been through tour of Duty and wanted a dog!! I loved the interaction of him and Jeannie! This story was just as good as the first one but also it was more heartbreaking!

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I really enjoyed reading this book. This is the second book in the series, but you do not have to read the first one in order to enjoy the second book. The first book introduces readers to some of the characters you will find in this book and will give you an even greater understanding of some of the supporting characters, but you can still understand the characters without reading the first book. That being said, I thought the

I truly enjoyed this second book by a goodreads friend from way back. I could tell how much she has grown as a writer and appreciated the amount of research she must have done to produce this original plot with two settings and make it come alive for her readers. The characters were very likable and their interaction was fun to "observe" as the hero (and I mean that term literally) was a beta male and his heroine was the one who took the lead in the developing relationship without being super ag ...more

A sweet, emotional, heart-warming story perfect for the Holidays. Zach, a wounded Vet, is all alone. He has no family and has been permanently separated from his Marine “family” due to his injuries. Not to mention his self-imposed isolation in an effort to avoid the stares his scars receive. Zach is desperately looking to find his dog Kiki, who not only made his service more bearable but most importantly, saved his life. He has all but given up hope when he meets Jeannie.

Jeannie, who runs a resc

A beautiful Christmas story - but it can be read by anyone, not only those who celebrate this time of year. It is a heartwarming, tearjerking, romantic and funny story about a fighter who lost nearly everything and a heroine with such a big heart she cares more for others than herself. Going to Afghanistan to rescue dogs who built a friendship with US soldiers who don't want to leave them behind is a dangerous thing to do but it is done (and part of the price you pay for this book goes to just s ...more

This is a super book that should touch every emotion that you may have. Zach is a wounded soldier who lost his leg and became badly scarred in an explosion while serving his country. Jeannie helps rescue animals from Afghanistan in turn returning them to their owners that served in the military. Zach and Jeannie Skype back and forth and fall in love in the process. Zach is trying to overcome his scars and the thought that someone may want to love him the way that he is. He is such an humble char ...more

The perfect story for the first day of a new year. An injured vet, both physically and emotionally, a kind woman who doesn't see his scars, an adorable dog - what else could one want?

The man in question has lost not only a limb, but a dog that he had "adopted" in Afghanistan. His buddies have tried to look after the dog for him, but bad news follows. The woman, Jeannie Montgomery, works for a rescue organization that brings dogs out of the war-torn country, and Zach makes the connection with his

Fabulous story about a wounded warrior and his two girls - the dog who saved his life in Afghanistan and the woman who brought him back to life. Almost too sweet, but so believable and heart-warming that I don't care, this is a wonderful book. I have a soft spot in my heart for those who serve and protect our country and I love animals. This story combined both in a great way. I highly recommend this to anyone who wants to feel good and enjoy a good book at the same time. Two thumbs and a paw up ...more

Wow, the Heart of the Season is a book I could not put down!!! Julianna is able to transport you into the book with her wonderful writing, its mind blowing!

Heart of the Season is about an Afghan Veteran who returns home wounded and broken. During his healing, he recalls his K9 being left behind and in turn searches for her from another country. During searching he is able to form new friendships, and business relations which in turn leads to a Romantic relationship.

The only thing I didn't like in this book is the word Sweetie! Now that being said I really liked this book! It was well written and was a very emotional read! Zach who is a scarred veteran is almost a recluse, because of his injuries, is trying to find the dog he had to leave behind in Afghanistan. Fate intervenes with a girl named Jeannie. This is a touching story of two people with a common goal falling in love. Y'all get your hankies ready! You will need them!

Copy received in return for my honest review.

This is a lovely holiday HEA book about a wounded hero (Zach) lost in society and a young determined, enthusiastic girl named Jeannie.

The story follows Zach's readjustment to life outside of the marines and jeannie's quest to find Zach's beloved pet dog KiKi, who is lost in Afghanistan.

I love a happy ever after, and found this book a quick and easy read.

Omgosh this book was so over the top and lame. It was like reading an ABC Family, Walt Disney, or Hallmark story. The H and H spent more time apart then they did together. I kept rolling my eyes through out the whole book. I got up to 86% percent and had to stop torturing myself. It was just soo,,I don't know,,,sugary,,,immature,,,not well developed at all.
InD'tale Magazine

The first chapter of the story was very promising where the emotions associated with losing a best friend were laid out for the readers to experience.

I won this book through a Facebook giveaway.

I love Zack and Jeanne in this book almost more than Ethan and Becca from the first book. Although this is book 2 in the series, it can be read as a standalone since the original characters make an appearance but do not play a giant role.

Surprised by the sweetness

I am slightly embarrassed to admit that this book made me cry ... Three times. What I imagined would be a sweet little read, was actually a study in love and devotion, loneliness and hope. And it was all wrapped up in a cute and smile inducing story.
4,5 stars.

I'm a hopeless romantic and believer in fairy tales. Even as a little girl, my fondest dream was to find a Prince Charming who would sweep me off my feet. I'm happy to report I've been married to him for twenty-five years. Although I've been an avid reader since I was two years old, I never envisioned myself as a writer until 2009. Now I feel like I've finally found my life's passion. The muses ke ...more
