Chalk, a ubiquitous and versatile implement made from limestone, is much more than a humble tool for jotting impermanent notes. With a wide range of uses in art and design, chalk is quickly becoming a favorite of artists around the world to create impressive works of art. In The Art of Chalk, noted street painter Tracy Lee Stum takes an inspiring look at the many exciting creative applications for this easily accessible medium. With a historic overview of chalk's origins as an art medium, and how its artistic uses have evolved over the centuries, this book is a wealth of knowledge for anyone looking to get creative with this time-honored art medium. Featuring the impressive work of some of today's most prominent artists and designers, The Art of Chalk explores helpful and inspiring techniques used in typography and lettering, fine art, and the intricate, elaborate, and mind-bending chalk designs known as street art. In the resources section, you'll even find a detailed listing of chalk festivals held around the world.
This book provides an overview of the many ways chalk art is used today. From fine oil pastels to street chalk, from store blackboards to festivals, I appreciated the variety presented. The book has examples from many artists, often with photos of one work in various stages of its production so the reader can learn from the techniques used on the way to the final result. There are sections about the various tools and materials, and various methods. I read this book because I was curious specifically about street art, but I really appreciate the breadth of coverage of EVERYTHING artists are creating with chalk because it’s opened my mind to greater possibilities.
the ART of CHALK Techniques & inspiration for creating art with chalk was an okay book. I didn’t dislike it. However, nothing in it really jumped out at me. Oops! I almost forgot the Batman, Robin, and Batmobile. That was the only part of the book worth mentioning.
An interesting work in a publishing void. Yet the author employs such a rudimentary reason it quickly becomes painful to read. "With a wide range of uses in art and design, chalk is quickly becoming a favorite of artists around the world to create impressive works of art." and on and on.
