This is a 3.5 star read.

An intriguing historical police procedural series set in Chicago in the late 1800's and featuring a burgeoning Chicago P.D. Our duo of Sergeant Doran and his new rookie Detective Diamond are sent to investigate a brutal killing amidst the backdrop of an anarchist bombing and the rise of the 8 Hour Day movement.

this book was wrote about the 1800 I found it hard to put myself back that far in time but the story was very good and as soon as I feel I can do 1800 again I will be reading number 2 and 3 in the series

Set in Chicago in 1886 this is a policy murder mystery novel. There are corrupt politicians and people in the police force which comes to light as Diamond and Doran lead the investigation into a bombing and a murder.

I did find the book a bit confusing at the beginning with lots of names and nicknames that being said the premise and plot were plot with good writing, a nice flow, and good characterisations.

I haven't read many historical police stories.

It was a simpler process - interview everyone you can and try to get snitches to give you leads. There's police corruption, labour movement ... and the events take place after a real bomb in 1886.

The characters are depicted well - the good guys and the bad guys.

Chicago 1886, just a few days after an explosion haskilled and maimed some policemen Sergeant Doran gets a new partner - rookie Detective Diamond. They are sent to investigate a suspicious death, not realising the havoc that will follow.
An enjoyable story, and a good solid start to the series, with some likeable characters.

I received a copy of “Madman”, an historical mystery, from the author through Voracious Readers Only. Fair labour laws have not come about easily and this book points that out as it highlights the plight of the worker in nineteenth century Chicago. I was delighted with the nineteenth century setting and the characters. Diamond and Doran are tough but tender cops trying to keep the peace during a century calling for radical social change. Anarchists call forth the tough side and Doran's daughters ...more
