The Restless Executive

"William tossed and turned as questions kept reappearing in his mind. Why didn′t he enjoy his job anymore or get satisfaction from climbing the career ladder? Work used to be a pleasure, but right now there seemed to be more changes, demands and pressures than ever before. He didn′t feel ′right′ inside and couldn′t put his finger on why."

William Cleverley has worked his way to the top with ambition and enthusiasm, but is now restless and losing sight of who he is. However, it′s this sense of restlessness that gives him the energy to begin his journey of transformation.

'Restless' is an appropriate word! I whizzed through this book in three sittings but the problem with the first two is that I was reading just before going to sleep. The thoughts triggered got my mind racing so fast that I couldn't get to sleep either night.

I have found the storytelling technique for business books to be a bit hit and miss in the past. It works really well here. Although sometimes it feels like an advert for the process being outlined, a common issue with such books, Jo Simpson has done well to integrate her lessons fairly seamlessly with the story. And you relate comfortably with the main character, which is key.

The issues raised by the book will affect a lot of people and there are simple exercises throughout to help you apply the techniques shared within to your own life. I chose to read first and then do the exercises later, and I have rarely felt so motivated by a business or self-development book to actually do something as a result.

Genuinely life changing....if you are open to it.
