Die große Bärenschule
Der einsame Einsiedler hat schon lange auf einen gelehrigen Schüler gewartet, den er in Geschichte und anderen Fächern unterrichten kann. Dass aber ausgerechnet der an seiner Höhle vorbeitrottende Bär sein Schüler würde, daran hat er nicht geglaubt. Jetzt ist Praxis gefragt, und die Theorie wird über Bord geworfen. Bald wird gemeinsam Boot gefahren, Essen gekocht und werden Fische gefangen. Der Bär ist in seinem Element, stellt sich allerdings nicht selten ein wenig trottelig an. Wie gut, dass der Einsiedler viel Geduld und das Herz am rechten Fleck hat. So macht Schule Spaß. Und gemeinsam ist das Leben gleich doppelt schön!

Reflections and lessons learned:
“I’m ticklish under there…!”
Brain alongside brawn, weak working with the strong - a sort of like a slightly outdated but still mostly sweet buddy cop movie! A lovely throw back for so many small elements and a great narrator familiar from multiple vehicles in my childhood

This is a really fun listen. I had the Tony Robinson audio and it’s a delight. A beautiful setting, the bear is such a loveable oaf, and the hermit, well you’ll feel his pain. Recommend it highly.

Enjoyable short story, read wonderfully by Tony Robinson.
We whiled away a few school runs listening to this. Both voices are conveyed nicely by Robinson, the older Hermit and the dim but eager Bear. The Hermit is desperate to pass on his knowledge to a student, as he ages, and a young Bear, chancing upon his cave and seeing his signs, is just as keen to learn and receive a Certificate.
But of course, bears aren't really cut out for regular academic endeavours, so the Hermit does his best to convey the card game Snap, first aid, sailing... can the Bear possibly shine and earn his Certificate?
The exasperation of the Hermit is subtly done, and we both laughed at the terrible messes the pair get into. I wish I could see Blake's illustrations, but did enjoy listening to the inestimable Tony Robinson bring the pair to life. Very enjoyable.
There is also a lovely ending to the story, rather touching. My son is just the right age for this, I would say ages 6-9 will find this the funniest, and many will be able to read this alone.

Het audioboek wordt meer geacteerd dan voorgelezen, door niemand minder dan Baldrick uit Blackadder. Het verhaal zelf is leuk en luchtig en waarschijnlijk subliem geïllustreerd door Quinten Blake (die van de Roald Dahl boeken), maar door de stem van Tony Robinson heb je er helemaal geen tekeningen nodig om er met heel het gezin van te genieten.

The Hermit and the Bear is the story of a lonely but very knowledgeable hermit who advertises his services as a tutor. A talking bear answers the advert and the hermit takes him on. The majority of the book is a tale of misadventure, where every one of the hermit's carefully planned lessons is ruined by the well-meaning but clumsy bear.
Despite the hermit's mounting exasperation, the story has a really heartwarming ending, and Blake's illustrations of the bear are among his best.
It's not an epic or especially dramatic story, but it's touching and very funny. I don't think this is in print any more. Very sad!
