Ruined women don’t hope, killers don’t dream, and the dead don’t feel pain.

Rachel Emerson is resigned to live as a spinster. Her parents keep her shameful secret, and her only brother, Seth, vanished mere days after witnessing her rape, taking her dishonor with him and giving them all an alibi for their grief. But none of that matters. Appearances are useless if she can’t

Once again, Ms. Melissa Magrove has written a story that had so many emotions, heart-wrenching scenes, and heartache. But the story is full of change, new beginnings, not only for Rachel Emerson but also for the widower, Jacob Evans. Two people will have to both learn how to live again, one dealing with a violent act and the other with death. Will a friendship become more for them—and what will happen for the future? Out of tragedy, hope can shine.

I had high expectations of this book because of the number of positive reviews and, to be honest, I kind of loved it. I read it once and then read it again because it's just so well done. Maygrove does something very few authors are very able to do at all, much less well--introduce two characters who are emotionally wounded without making them one-dimensional or reducing them to stereotypes. I also liked that Jacob was not the perfect hero--he had faults and made mistakes and didn't always do th ...more

This is a very good romance, with a likable couple. It did bother me some that Jacob was so determined that Rachel should "obey" him. I realize that was typical of marriages in that time period, so it was historically accurate -- but it still bothered me. I also thought he should be a little more understanding of her fear, since she had been raped. He told her he understood, but didn't seem to realize that her fear of him was not personal, but based on the trauma of her experience.

A beautiful story about the healing value of love. How two people that have lost in the past gain love and respect. How a woman that had been previously raped gains the love of a man that had lost his wife and child in childbirth. How the both of them help to heal each other. HEA ending.

This was a well-done romance book with thoughtfully and thoroughly fleshed-out characters, good tension, page-turning qualities and excellent structure. For all of that, it was a tough read, about a tough subject, and left me a little depressed.

Rachel Emerson is....existing. She was savagely attacked in her family's barn, and those horrific minutes ruined her life. They stole her prospects, her security, her normalcy and her brother. Three years later, and she is still taking baby steps on the

At the start I'll say that I'm not usually a romance reader, but Precious Atonement I read from beginning to end. That's saying a lot for me.

Here's why I read the entire book. I believed in the characters, and I wanted to find out what happened to them. I wanted to know if Rachel would overcome her brutal treatment and move beyond being a frightened, damaged woman. I wanted to know if Jacob would overcome his fear of losing another wife because of the "bear" of a man he was. I was very satisfied

Loved It!

As I sit here wiping my eyes, sad because the book is over but so happy with the ending, I have to say very well done to the author. You wrapped everything up very nicely and kept my attention all the way through. A true love story from beginning to the end. I loved the first book, Come Back and when I heard there was going to be another book, I was very excited to see what adventure this book was going to take me on. I loved sweet Rachel, our heroine and sensitive, caring Jacob, our he

I love a good romance- the kind with and exciting plot; characters I can root for; and sigh-worthy, well-written passion- and Melissa Maygrove delivers! This historical novel is excellently written. The plot moves quickly, tastefully deals with difficult subjects from a period perspective. That's another reason I love this book. This story makes you feel like you have traveled back in time. The language is authentic; the people and their reactions are authentic; and the setting is perfect. Loved ...more

This book tugs the heart strings. Melissa is masterful at building emotional connections with the reader. She makes you care about Rachel and Jacob, and exult when they overcome their demons and achieve the happy ending readers hope for. She does an excellent job at drawing you into the time when life lacked the easy conveniences, and hard work was just part of life. I'd recommend this if you enjoy realistic romances in a historical setting. ...more

Wonderful book.

Ever since reading about Rachel in the first book I was hoping to one day read her story. I imagined her story was going to be full of self doubt, sadness, but also courage and love. Well I was not disappointed. This story has everything I pictured it would be a great life story fill with every emotion two very hurt people could withstand. Also a love so true it broke away every single bad emotion.

How sweet and heart rending

How awful to have dealt with with a rape in those days. Not that it is a picnic even now days. Back then women were shunned by all. They had no one to turn to. Thank goodness for her understanding husband. She too was understanding. This book was as well written as the first, nary a dull moment in the whole book.

Jacob and Rachel's story:
This story had a lot of tension and surprises in it. The characters seemed real and had full passion and fears that you could feel as you were reading the story. Some times they would make you angry sometimes fearful, but you were drawn up into their lives and felt their emotions. Good story and well written!

This historical romance is not your sweet, innocent love story. The characters are flawed and have come from rough places in life. But that makes them all the more real and the ending all the more satisfying.

I will read more books by this author

The characters, especially Jacob ,were not totally realistically over all there was romance, heartbreak, intrigue, and excitement all tied together. It was hard to put the story down because I wondered what was going to happen next.
