An erotic retelling of 'Beauty and the Beast', 'Depravity' proved to be far more engaging than I had anticipated. I really enjoyed the way this author changed the story up enough to make it stand out from the rest. You could definitely see the inspiration from the classic story, but the characters and unique details separated this retelling from many others.
As I listened to the audiobook, I found myself swept up in Benella's day to day life. She was a fabulous heroine and easy to love. Her existence was bleak, but she managed to be the bright part of everyone's day. Everyone seemed to feed off of her goodness and I wanted her to be rescued from her dire situation.
Although a bit gruff, I found the Beast to be likable right from the start. Sure, he was rough around the edges, but everything he did was to save Benella. Time and time again, he came to her rescue. At times, I was even frustrated with her for failing to fully appreciate everything that he did for her.
My biggest complaint with this story is that it is only part of the story. I didn't realize this when I purchased the audiobook and am a little peeved, mostly with myself for not figuring this out beforehand. 'Depravity' ends with Benella agreeing to stay with the Beast.
If you're familiar with the classic, which I'm sure practically everybody is, you know that this is pretty early-on in the scheme of things. At this rate, I might have to read 2-4 more books before I ever get to any action between Benella and the Beast. That is quite a while to wait.
However, I have to admit that I thoroughly enjoyed this story. The narration was great and it was a joy to listen to. I'm sure I will be buying the remaining books in no time to finish this story out. As far as classic retellings go, this was superb. I just wanted more.

While searching for retellings on Amazon, this book popped up: Depravity by M.J. Haag. I love Beauty and the Beast retellings, and this being categorized as an adult romance pulled me right in. I was able to get the ebook on Amazon for free and ended up purchasing the Audible version as well.
The story begins with Benella, a teenage girl living with her father (Bernard) and two sisters (Bryn and Blye). Her mother has passed away and the family struggles to make ends meet. Her father works as a teacher, and one sister as a seamstress, but they still have little money or food to eat. The sisters try to save as much coin as possible, even if it results in the family starving. The girls are coming of age and old enough to marry, but depsite their father's hope's, struggle to find suitable husbands that they approve of.
Benella forages for food along an enchanted estate, finding crops to either share with her family or trade for other goods. She eventually encounters the beast who lives at the estate. The beast is angry and has been known to capture people, but he allows Benella to go free, yet consistently asks her to stay with him at his estate. The beast perplexes Benella as she strives to care for her family, and tries to stay safe from two village boys who are relentlessly trying to beat her up.
It's been mentioned that this is an erotic and seductive tale; however, I surely didn't think it was very erotic at all. When the story first began there was a sexual scene, but it was vaguely described. As the book went on, it wasn't until the last third where some other sexual scenes came about (one very uncomfortable one including a sexual encounter with a wood nymph), but most others were on the light side in my opinion. I expected romance here between Benella and the beast to eventually develop, but instead the ending was left wide open, resulting in me feeling compelled to read book two and three.
As far as the worldbuilding and character development, I found it just okay. There really wasn't much imagery at all. Naturally, I wanted to know more about the beast, but hardly any information was given besides him being extremely angry, and of course having a tail. He's not well understood, but maybe the characters will flesh out in book two and three. With that said, I did find it unique how the author wrote scenes in her own way, making this retelling stand out from other Beauty and the Beast retellings. I was also on the edge of my seat during a few parts.
I did enjoy the author's writing, but wish the story was more of a romance as labeled, and that it had more detail. As a retelling as a whole, it was enjoyable, and the Audible narrator was great.
I'd rate this one 3.5 and round up to 4****. My plan is to move right along to book two to discover what's to come of Benella and the beast.

I'm biased since I wrote it...but I think it's AWESOME!!! ;)
The Beastly Tales was a two year project. I started writing it as a single story way back in 2013. When I saw how long it was getting, I decided to make it into a serial. But, as a reader, I don't like tiny books. So, I chucked it out into three novel sized parts. I hope everyone enjoys reading Depravity, Part 1, as much as I enjoyed dreaming it and writing it.

Benella lives with her father Bernard and her two sisters Bryn and Blye in a small village.Her father is the local schoolmaster wich pays just barely to keep them from starving even with the money Blye brings home as an assistant for the village seamstress.
To supplement this Benella forages near the grounds of an abandoned estate that is kept under a spell and guarded by a fearsome beast wich is best avoided.But making ends meet is not her only problem as Benella also has to deal with avoiding the two sons of the blacksmith that constantly harass her and the ever more increasing lecherous intentions of the baker.
One day she overhears her sisters talking and realizes that her sisters has been hoarding money and resources from their father and herself forcing them to live in near poverty.
By the actions of her sisters and the sons of the blacksmith she is thrown into the presence of the beast more than one time and the beast demands she repay him.
Well...I had been willing to overlook some of the books flaws and give it at least an two star rating but that went out the door the more I read and the more I started to cringe.
For one thing its jarring when the suddenly formal dialogue is broken with more modern language but much more than all of that is all the sexual situations that I didnt expect nor particulary care for and I dont It was of the kind that made me feel increasingly uncomfortable.
Its pretty much erotica.
On at least three ocassions does the main characters stumble across couples having coitus and one really weird scene with the beast and a woodnymph (I swear I dont search out books with quasi-bestiality,its almost like they find me.)or what about when two prostitutes show Benella how to give a guy a handjob. :0
“If a man’s energies are pent and not released, he will become volatile, unpredictable. Tension will creep into his body and often stay there even after the energies are eventually released. If you touch a man, no matter how innocent the touch, watch for the signs,” Aryana warned. “
Be sure your touch is only releasing tension and not building pent energies.” Fascinated, I nodded my understanding. It did sound a bit like the beast. Even after his encounter with the wood nymph and he’d released his energies, he had still kept his tension. The sisters were right about the dangers. I would never attempt anything like what I’d just learned on the beast. I feared his response.
Did I mention this book is labeled as YA? Am I being a prude or is this acceptable for YA?
I also kept wondering why the baker appeared to be such a powerful in the village and why the smiths wife was desperate enough to pay him in natura.I have always thought blacksmiths were in high demand and therefore better off since they learn to fix all sorts of things.
Her sisters were just horrible and It was very frustrating that Benella didnt confront them on their selfishness but this seems to have been a trait she inherited from her father as he is a very vague character.
Her father just seems so placid about the things that happens to Benella she comes home injured or someone broke into their home and attacked her all of this is met with polite interest and then he just tells her to clean herself up and stay away from the beasts estate. So there are two boys who are harrassing your daughter and your other daughters are keeping you in poverty.
Then, arriving home late and finding your bed empty...” He sighed. “I’m very relieved you weren’t forced into...” He shook his head unable to finish.
DO SOMETHING WILL YOU AND STOP BEING SO WISHY-WASHY
In the original fairytale the conflict comes from Beauty being forced to live with the Beast in his castle. Here our Beauty just ambles around without progressing the plot into its pretty much just filler to make it so and so many pages and voila its a book. and to find out the whole story you have to get the next part. I dont mind cliffhangers at the end of a book but what I dont like is when a book is just bait.
Is it ironic that that a book with so much ...ahem gratification on its pages leaves one unsatisfied?

Told in single POV, 1st person, it’s the first installment in the "Beastly Tales" series and can’t be read as a standalone. This was my first experience of retelling stories and unfortunately, it didn’t go as I anticipated. Depravity is supposed to be a quick read (considering it’s a novella) but it’s very slow-paced. The interaction between Benella and The Beast were only a few and each time was a repeat of their previous ones without a solid conversation between them (at least not for the first 80%). Actually, 80% of the story was on repeat and it annoyed the hell out of me! For the plot nothing really happened, nothing really exciting here. Overall, it fell flat for me but I hope you enjoy it more than me!

This is one of the best retelling of beauty and the beast.
This book really feels like it takes you back in time so well written that I can see the places and people in my mind giving the story life and a real connection to the characters.

Please excuse me a moment while I do a little happy dance because I adored this book.
It's been a long time since I was as immersed in a book as I was with this one. While I found the very start slightly confusing, I was soon pulled into the world this author created. It was harsh and a bit depressing but beautiful and mesmerising at the same time.
I rooted for Benella. I wanted her sisters to suffer for their deceit and selfish attitudes. I wished her Father would stand up and deal with his daughters, not meekly carry on ignoring everything around him. And the Beast; what a tormented and intriguing character he is.
I'm off to read the next part immediately. There are so many questions.

Wow! An erotic re-telling of Beauty and the Beast - and a good one! I applaud the author for her ability to grow the story without rushing anything or boring the reader. That's not always an easy line to walk, or in this case, write. I have to say that I got completely caught up in Benella's life and I can't wait to read the next part. The only thing I didn't like was the heroine's age, but no book is perfect.

I have mixed feelings with this one. the heroine is quite admirable carrying the load to support her family. the story did have a lot of potential but several aspects kept me from truly liking it. first off some scenes read as if they were from an erotica novel but it was with secondary characters etc..It was quite strange the way the sex, hand jobs, all things sexual were portrayed. I think the main reason I didn't like this book was because the "beast" never showed any redeeming qualities. he was consistently a moody, demanding dick. the heroine witnessed him fucking a wood nymph through the window. No explanations etc. and quite frankly I really don't care what his reasoning was. when I read a book I don't want to hear about the hero or heroine getting on with other people (or things) . I paid .99 for this book and it ended on a cliffhanger. all things considered it unlikely I will continue this series.

PLOT:
Depravity is about a 16-year-old girl named Benella Hovtel (god, shoot me now), who lives in a small village and scavenges for food to feed her family because her sisters are selfish and keep the coin they make for themselves. She lives with her two sisters, Bryn and Blye, along with her father in a small two-bedroom cottage - her mother passed away many years ago. Essentially, her and her family are just trying to make ends meat like everyone else in their weird-ass village, and avoid the Beast's wrath.
Benella is constantly being tortured by two village boys, Splyde and Tennen--for God only knows why. Oh, did I mention that Tennen is "dating" Benella's makes-me-want-to-stab-her-eyes-out sister, Bryn. Tennen and his brother are constantly chasing Benella around like an 8-year-old girl, smacking her with twigs, and beating on her because they think she acts like she's above them. Then we have the Baker, one of the most disgusting characters I've ever read about in my life. .
So this is the thing, I enjoyed many aspects of Benella's character; however, I would have felt a little more engrossed in this book if the character wasn't so young. It was admirable that she was so young while taking such good care of her father and sisters, but her immaturity really took away from the potential of the story. I feel that 18 would have been a more suitable age to make the heroine.
Looooong story short, Benella sets traps along the Estate of the Beast. She also collects enchanted food that mysteriously grows during off seasons near the Beast's home in order to provide for her family. The Beast, the Estate, the food--it all intrigues her. Thus the story begins...
OVERALL:
The writing style did not match the era. It was odd that the author made the female protagonist 16 years old in an ADULT romance book that was so sex-focused #dafuq #awkward. The sisters were extremely narcissistic. The Beast was weird, too - his character had potential, but the author made him sound very monotone with no personality whatsoever, so I found it really hard to connect with him. Honestly, majority of his scenes were a) tossing people from his estate or b) telling Benella "Beauty" to reside with him at his estate forever so long as she obeys his every command. The only characters that I found tolerable were Benella's father and the Candlemaker.
Alllllsooo, not a whole lot of word-building happened in this either. Perhaps just enough to create some sort of image in your mind but the rest was ultimately left for the reader to conjure up. That being said, I've already finished book 2 (I may be an idiot) and have already started book 3 (yup, I've just confirmed that I am an idiot). To be honest, I am just a curious cat who wants to see how this story plays out. Without spoiling anything though, I will say that I am significantly enjoying book 3 Devastation a lot more than the previous books--even though there are MANY repetitive scenes.
SoooOoOOoOo yah... cool concept, however, first book was poorly executed. I am giving this 2.5 stars and rounding it up to 3 because I am in a forgiving mood, unlike the Beast.

The only characters that I found tolerable were Benella's father and the Candlemaker.
Alllllsooo, not a whole lot of word-building happened in this either. Perhaps just enough to create some sort of image in your mind but the rest was ultimately left for the reader to conjure up. That being said, I've already finished book 2 (I may be an idiot) and have already started book 3 (yup, I've just confirmed that I am an idiot). To be honest, I am just a curious cat who wants to see how this story plays out. Without spoiling anything though, I will say that I am significantly enjoying book 3 Devastation a lot more than the previous books--even though there are MANY repetitive scenes.
SoooOoOOoOo yah... cool concept, however, first book was poorly executed. I am giving this 2.5 stars and rounding it up to 3 because I am in a forgiving mood, unlike the Beast.

I really loved this retelling of beauty and the beast it pulls you in from the very first chapter.
When Benella witnesses the baker taking only one type of trade from a woman in the town, something she is not willing to do, she try's to avoid him even more than she did before. But there are other people in the town upset with what she witnessed and want to keep her silent.
This book is so well written you can really see everything and everyone in the town coming to life in your mind the story a great flow and kept me interested to the end eager to start book 2.

Whoa! Any beauty and the beast lovers out there have to look at this rendition! I'm really not a fan of retellings but this has to be one of the best I have ever read. I was really nervous when I started this to see if the author was going to keep the servants cursed in the story and I believe the vines and such represent that. It's not so much the beast that is cursed but the entire staff as well.
Depravity was adult minded with scenes of erotic couplings that enthralled me. The story was intricate, and I was totally engrossed only to be stumped by a cliffhanger. I know most people hate cliffhangers but this book was really worth it. I still want more though....
The book starts out with everyone living on tough times with barely enough to scrape by. With no food and money some are bartering with what little they do have, and some with nothing are bartering with there bodies. Poverty is not kind but Benella scouts the countryside for food while her father reads his books, and her sisters sew. After some mean boys lock her behind the gates of the old estate, she rumbles with the beast and comes out unscathed. The beast however seems to take a liking to Benella and she to him! I'm so impressed with how engrossing this retellings is but how the author makes it her own.
Five stars of entertainment .... I can't wait for the next part!

In true Melissa Haag fashion this was addictive, compelling and demands your full attention until you've finished and then longer. This was definitely a winner.

Beauty and the Beast is one of my favorite fairy tales, Disney, the original, I am always on the look for beauty and the beast retellings and not even going to lie this was past all my expectations and more. I loved this and it was spectacular.
The writing was fluid, it feels old-timey *yeah whatever* it was intriguing. The characters were awesome, and their story is just beginning. Benella is one of the most decent characters ever. I loved her and she truly lives up to her title as Beauty. The sisters were well....yeah XD I loved Benella's father, he was a sweet man and i could see where she got her great nature from.
The beast well he was a very interesting character and from what we got to know of him in this book I am very intrigued to see where it goes next.

I love Beauty and the Beast- It is by far my favourite story from my childhood. The story just got better and more adult. Benella will do almost anything to make sure her family doesn't go without food, she walks and searches for miles each day to find either something to eat or trade.
The story is really well written and leaves you wanting more. I loved the characters even the ones you love to hate, they all bring something to the story. I read this book in one sitting until 11:30pm I couldn't put it down. I can't wait for the next story to see where it leads.

This type of book normally isn't my bag, but it was short and you can't accuse me of not trying new things.
So anyway, I am not quite sure who this is for. If you are looking for eroticism, then look elsewhere. There is a bit of sex here, but it is not very detailed and not the least bit sexy. If you are looking for romance, you won't find much here. Almost everyone (including the Beast) treats the main character like absolute garbage even on her best day.
The book is basically just the main character wandering around, finding food wherever she can (this is surprisingly a large focus of the book), and being treated like absolute dogshit wherever she goes. It kind of meanders on for its entire length (which is thankfully not much) and never really has any powerful, shocking, or exciting moments.
The writing wasn't awful and I never felt so frustrated with it that I wanted to abandon it, but I also have no desire to continue with the series at all.

Melissa Haag has a knack for creating wonderful characters we fall in love with, and then can't wait to find out what happens to them next. Benella is a gem and so is her father but her two sisters are something else. There are some pretty nasty types such as the Baker living in their village who go out of their way to make life difficult for Benella.
Benella routinely forages for food around the edge of the Beast's estate. It isn't until she is forced to take refuge behind his gates that their story really begins. The Beast is concealed in a mist and we only get hints of what he is truly like until almost the end of this first book.
Please be aware this is a dark, gritty tale with adult situations involving sex and violence. In my opinion, these add depth to the story rather than detracting from it. The other thing the reader needs to know is this book is the first of a three part series and ends all too soon. I know I can hardly wait for the next installment!

DISAPPOINTED sums it up. No romance and most of the characters besides Benella's father and the freaking candlemaker annoyed the crap out of me. Benella's sisters were money hoarding b****es, the beast was literally seen ONE time in the story, and Benella let everyone bully her. Definitely will not be continuing this series.

I thoroughly enjoyed this, and quite frankly, I was not expecting to. I don't usually expect a dark indie romance novel like this one to handle the Beauty and the Beast retelling acceptably, but Depravity held its own.

It's super slow development, but there's some irresistible pull to it that kept me going and wanting to know what happens next, so I'm now on book 2. Basically, this first book is about how hungry and badly clothed she and her family are.

You may have noticed a trend in books these days; retelling of some of the oldest stories out there, whether fairy tales, Shakespeare or fables, they all take a little or a lot from the original material and spin a new novel for readers to enjoy. M.J. Haag keeps a lot of the feel of the original Beauty and the Beast but she definitely spins this tale in a way that is all her own! This book is dark, mature and completely intriguing!
I immediately was drawn into the world building. Depravity gives us a good vision of what early century life might feel like, especially the division of the classes. Benella lives in a small cottage in a small town with her father and 2 older sisters. They are poor and work is rare. Benella seems to be the only one capable of hunting and scavenging for food to help keep her family from starving, even at 16 years old. We also discover that there are a couple of village boys who give her a hard time and she winds up being bullied into the enchanted Estate that is guarded by the unmerciful Beast.
Yes, times were different, and 16 is an acceptable age to be married off and the boys and men of the village are all banging down her door - so to speak - so Benella literally has to run and hide at the one place she has found a tiny form of sanctuary, the Beast's estate. This is where Benella's innocence is really adorable and we grow to despise her sisters & the villagers and love Benella! She is so strong and willing to accept her circumstances and do whatever it takes to help better the lives of her family, even her 2 ungrateful sisters.
I highly recommend Depravity! This is part 1 in a 3 part serial release, but this installment is almost a full length novel at almost 200 pages and you will be hooked and dying for part 2, Deceit, which releases soon! I was immersed in this book and was so sad when it ended especially since it ended in a cliffhanger, which is totally expected of a serial release, but luckily we don't have to wait too long!
This is the first adult release from the YA paranormal expert Melissa Haag, so she is released this series under a pseudonym of M.J. Haag! I received an eARC in exchange for an honest review.

The best revamp of Beauty and The Beast for adults! Benella is a poor girl from a starving family filled with issues of trust and love. Her sisters leave much to be desired and her father is spaced out in his own world. She travels to an estate almost daily that is guarded by The Beast. Around the walls of the estate, she finds vegetables growing that she can trade for bread or other needed items in town. Near the estate, she also discovers other worldly vegetation that she can't explain. When Benella attempts to help the family, she runs into "The Baker" whose price for bread she is quite unwilling to pay. Thru this all, Benella is forging a relationship with a Beast she hasn't even been able to see. A fantastic read! I couldn't put it down once I started and I am eagerly awaiting the next release! There's a risk involved when the first book in a series is available for free. If I like it, I know I'm going to be buying the rest of the books in the series. They always end just before the really good stuff happens, and I just HAVE to find out how it all plays out.
Beauty and the Beast was my favorite of the Disney movies growing up. Belle was not that helpless princess who needed to be rescued. She looked more like me with her brown hair and eyes, and the girl loved to read! Belle was my homegirl.
I enjoyed this take on the story. Benella (weird name) is a strong character and a saint for putting up with her two sisters. They're just terrible people. In fact, most of the people in this story are lacking. I liked Benella's father, but I just wish he would do something about the two brothers who were constantly attacking her. Threaten them, talk to their parents, get angry!
Some of the best characters came from the brothel. Yes, the brothel and the women who worked there were a big part of this story.
Those scenes just felt like they belonged in a different book, and I could have done without them. Also, tree sex.
This book had its wtf moments, but I still enjoyed it. And yes, I will be buying the next book.

I love Beauty & the Beast retellings. The narrative started out a bit choppy, improved as the story progressed. Mixed feelings. Lots of tropes, but it is a retelling. MC is a hardcore Mary Sue. I'm going to read the next book. I think I'm just falling for the cliffhanger, but it's quick, easy reading.

The reason is not clear to me, but the truth is that the story caught me from the beginning.
Yeah, it's not the best book I've ever read, not even the best retelling, and still, I couldn't put the story down. I suppose the reason is our brave protagonist who, although at times it may not be entirely pleasant, she leads you to follow her path very closely.
I admit that it is a bit long, but still, I enjoyed it very much.
I'm already with the second installment.

I'm a big fan of Beauty and the Best retellings (I really like Cruel Beauty, Soul in Darkness and anything Hades/Persephone) so I was interested to try this one out after it was recommended to me. Unfortunately, Depravity was pretty subpar with weak characterizations and a slow moving story, which was especially disappointing since it's such a short book.
So what's this book about?
Benella is a 16 year old girl living in a small village with her two sisters and father. Basically, everyone is super mean to her for no reason except for her father and the candlemaker. She provides for her family and is just wayyy too nice for her own good, which was frankly, annoying. Her family is pretty poor but Benella explores a mysterious and creepy estate which magically grows lots of veggies and food for her to take back and support her family with. The estate is known to be dangerous as a beast lives in it and rumors have it that people who explore the estate never return.
My review
I had a few major issues with this book. The first was the poor characterization of everyone, but especially Benella and the beast, who are the two most important characters. Mostly everyone is pretty evil or rude to Benella for no good reason. I didn't get why this was? I know it's a fairytale and stuff like this can happen, but Benella's sisters are kind of evil and the two village boys have no good reason for trying to actually kill her. There's no justification for why everyone treats sweet Benella, who does everything for her family, like crap. And then what was even worse was that Benella just spent her days in resigned acceptance to this. Come on, girl! Is it possible for you to get angry? Or show emotions?
I stopped at close to 70% and the beast has such little characterization that I'm not at all even intrigued by him or how he became what he is. So far his entire story has been saving Benella from evil villagers and asking her to stay at the estate without explaining why.
The book is slow. We barely know anything about the beast and most of the scenes between him and Benella are just repeating the same thing. Benella goes to the estate to get food, beast saves her, asks her to stay, she says no and takes the food back. That's been the book so far. But the book is also repetitive in how the whole first half is just showing Benella's crappy life in a village with people who harass her, which got pretty boring.
Then there's a couple of voyeuristic scenes that are so random and out of left field. Also- why did the author make Benella only 16? Nothing in this book makes thematic sense and the differences in tone and scene changes are jarring.
