The clash on Battleworld begins as the villains take weapons from a fortress on the celestial construct to launch a surprise assault on the heroes. Though the villains are winning initially, the heroes rally into regaining the upper hand. Doom's plans involving harnessing the powers of Molecule Man, the most powerful being on Battleworld in the hopes of winning it all, though it becomes clear quickly that he's not into working with the others. The plot here is laughably stupid, but there are some interesting character beats like Magneto coming into the surprised realization that he shares a lot in common with nonmutants. Zeck's artwork is functional, but a tad bland for the scope of the story. But I wouldn't place much blame on Zeck's work since the story itself is surprisingly bland too.

My only complaint is probably that the colouring isn’t as expressive as I feel this event needs, everything looks washed out.

The difference in leadership is the crux of the two sides here. Captain America was voted in and leads like a soldier. Though not perfect, especially with the X-Men, particularly Wolverine, it works and things get done. The villains, on the other hand, rush in, even as Octopus is trying to get them to agree to a plan first. Then, after the fight, they return to the base, where Doom takes charge through force, using Ultron to make himself the most powerful, and therefore the one in charge. Wolverine even comments that Captain America is the least powerful of the heroes, making this a very clear dichotomy.

Of course, the most powerful person is actually Molecule Man, but he doesn’t have the drive to use it. Which is where Doom comes in, again seeking to manipulate him to further his own agenda.

The first battle between the good guys and the bad guys. Magneto is up to something and took off with the Wasp. Doom reanimated Ultron and is now in charge of the bad guys. Galactus looks to be our next obstacle.

Art is kinda weird. Not as good looking as early 70's X-Men, which is my only real comparison. This is the first time with spaces that are massive and not just rooms and skyscrapers. Don't know if that is making things different.

I remember, as a child, watching a tv commercial for various superhero toys to promote this comic book. I was instantly hooked. Secret Wars might not hold up today, but it's story has lasting ramifications that can b felt in 2024. I thought this mini-series was such a wonderful read. It tells stories of heroes and villains and their cosmic odyssey when they get thrown into a created world designed for them to fight.

The first serious battle between the heroes and the villains, with more character development. What is so interesting about this book to me is that it isn't just two monolithic factions, but several sub-faction groups that have their own goals and viewpoints.
