Ninth House Trilogy #3
Dead Beat
The highly anticipated, explosive conclusion to the Ninth House trilogy from #1 New York Times bestselling author Leigh Bardugo.
Hell is empty and all the devils are here…
Alex Stern made it to hell and back more than once, but this time she left the door open behind her. Demons are creeping through the streets of New Haven and the Yale campus, feeding on the souls of the living, terrifying the dead. Alex and her allies can hunt them, but it’s only a matter of time before the gates to the underworld open and they face a war they cannot win. To stop it, they’ll have to reach deep into the secrets of Yale and its societies, and discover the truth hidden in Alex’s own blood.
While she struggles to hold onto the dream of a future Yale once offered, Alex must contend with the machinations of a corrupt Lethe Board and a deadly vampire with his own connection to the societies. But for the first time in her life, she won’t have to face the fight alone. Dawes, Turner, Mercy, and even Tripp will have a role to play, none more so than Alex’s mentor Darlington, the golden boy who lived so long in her head, now back in the flesh and cursed with dangerous powers of his own. Hell itself is stalking the delegates of Lethe House, and they’re all about to learn that demons don’t play by human rules.

I cannot believe this series is finished! This is one of those series that feels like has been open-ended FOREVER, and it feels so wonderful being able to close the loop and see how everything concludes. And... I'm actually quite happy with this series finale for the most part. I'm happy with our character arcs, I loved how we dove deeper into the academia, secret societies and got ALL the demons. But is it just me, or does the actual epilogue of this book feel way too open ended? I felt the same way when finishing the King of Scars duology in the Grishaverse as well... and I'm starting to think our friend Leigh Bardugo does NOT like closing doors on anything 😂
This book truly felt so enjoyable to read, I think because Alex has a support group now. We started the series with her feeling so isolated, having no one she could fully open up to. She's always had 1 or 2 people in her life that she's cared about deeply, but even so - she had never felt like she could actually open up to any of them completely. But because of the events and adventures that we've gone through with these characters in the previous books, we now have this group that have literally seen each other's most vulnerable parts. They have all seen each other at their actual worst moments. Yet, they still choose to stick together and support one another - and isn't that just the absolute best way to form a found family? I LOVE THESE CHARACTERS!
Loved all the talk about the hero's journey and what a typical hero looks like. I've always said that Alex is one of my favourite protagonists because she really isn't your typical hero at all - so it felt so full circle seeing our characters having these self-aware moments where they compare themselves to the typical hero and reflect on how they do or do not fit into the blueprint.
There is just so much I love about this book. I love how everything is a mental journey. Even our final "battle" moments are half a physical battle, but also mental - and it's just so thrilling knowing that you might not be able to trust what you're seeing right in front of you. Also love how these characters are all actually smart and can piece things together - and I don't feel like I'm constantly two steps ahead of them throughout the entire book (in fact, I felt like I was two steps behind the entire time 😂).
Obviously love the jabs toward the issues that exist in academia culture.
The only reasons this wasn't perfect for me were:
1) We maybe got a bit too much detail on certain items... extra detailed lore that may or may not have been completely necessary to progress the plot and so their long descriptions may have hindered the pacing/flow a bit?
2) Because we're left a bit open-ended, I didn't get that fully satisfied feeling that I expect when finishing a series :(
Anyways, loved this series - so happy to have completed it and would definitely recommend!

1.5 stars.
Hurray for Alex, the most uniquely special protagonist I’ve ever had the misfortune to read about.
Finally finished this series, and I’m still trying to figure out why I hyped up the third book so much, especially since the first two weren't exactly my favorites. I liked them, sure, but not enough to get excited. Turns out, the third book was the weakest.
Honestly, I wish the demons had triumphed; they were far more interesting and likable than the main cast. Their darker, more complex natures actually kept my attention, something the human characters miserably failed to do.
While the plot and dark academia aesthetic are beautifully crafted, creating a gothic atmosphere so vivid it could haunt your nightmares, I still have issues.
The biggest problem with the plot? It is so crowded it could win an award for chaos. The second book did the same. Instead of developing a few key plots well, the narrative keeps piling on new ones, only to rush the endings.
But my main frustrations revolve around the characters.
Let's start with the only character I could stand and like: Tripp.
Tripp started as the only somewhat logical character, brave enough to call out the double standards and societal hypocrisies affecting him and Darlington. Initially, I wasn't overly invested in him, but he grew on me, probably because he was less insufferable than the rest. Now? He’s my favorite, for what that’s worth.
But then, the narrative decides to treat him like a joke. The dismissive attitude toward Tripp's intelligence and his honesty about double standards made me want to throw the book. His treatment by the narrative and other characters was just disgusting.
Darlington gets VIP treatment, as if he's some kind of divine being, while Tripp is treated like dirt. They are both demons. I genuinely want to know what makes Darlington so special. If you look at both characters objectively, there’s barely a difference, except Darlington is the love interest Alex fawns over.
This bias is reinforced by the story’s overall attitude that it’s okay to overlook Darlington's demon side and villainize Tripp unjustly. The other characters share this hypocritical mentality, judging others based on their suffering or background, which made me wish for karmic justice to find them all.
Even at the finale, I wanted to punch the characters for their hypocrisy. Their selective empathy was infuriating.
Every main character seemed to have a holier-than-thou attitude, which I couldn't tolerate. Maybe the author wanted to critique the elitism and privilege in dark academia, but it came across more like a half-baked roast.
Now, onto Alex, oh boy. I’d forgotten how much I couldn't stand her personality. She’s the queen of self-pity, constantly whining about how her life is the hardest, like she’s been cursed by the universe. Her endless pity party kept going right until the very last page.
No protagonist has wallowed in misery quite like Alex. She should get a trophy for her relentless self-indulgence. And her ego? She’s convinced she’s smarter (not book smart, street smart) than everyone else because she’s endured suffering, as if hardship automatically makes you a genius. Sorry, but I need proof, not just melodramatic moans.
Her assumptions about people without knowing their stories? Comedy gold.
Let's discuss Darlington. I don't have much to criticize about him because he didn't really bother me much. However, I did find him to be a pretentious jerk towards Tripp at all times, often looking down on him or dismissing him. It was also frustrating how he never seemed to realize how much he and Tripp are similar, despite their differences. Other than those issues, he was generally okay in my view.
Dawes and Turner were present, and that was all; the supporting characters in the story felt somewhat flat to me, so I don't have many insights to share about them.
The romance? It was there, and that's it; I didn't feel it, not even once. Everything between Alex and Darlington happened at the worst possible moments, making me laugh rather than swoon. They picked absolutely terrible times for their romantic epiphanies.
I never bought that Darlington loved Alex or vice versa, like how the story kept trying to gaslight me into believing that they have an intense and strong love.
In conclusion, I often felt the urge to DNF this, but I persevered because I wanted to be an informed hater.

so many things happened in this book that I had fantasised about for years but didn't think had a chance of ever happening. I felt like a kid raised by an almond mom finally let loose in a candy store for the first time. god bless you Leigh Bardugo, may you always have nice things, may your pillow always be cold, you knew exactly what we needed and you delivered.
cute darlingstern date ideas: hunting demons, fighting the devil, committing murder, beating up assholes, taking down symbols of the white supremacist patriarchy together <33 YOU WILL GO DOWN IN HISTORY.
can't express in words how much this series means to me and I can't believe it's over now

baking sourdough/cooking lunch whilst doing the audiobook on a fall day was such a vibe i will say. pamela dawes would be proud. i’m going to miss this series. i love when a story has mini stories and factoids in it. idk how to explain it but it becomes like Story (bold). the raven scholar, for me, was similar in that. love when we don’t do the whole “if you kill the villain you’re just as bad they are!!!” like what? no. no????
this was indeed a galaxy of a series. get it?? also love when boyfriend enable girlfriend to do Mess and also Bad Things. and he support. yay!
pre-read thoughts:
anyone got a summary of the last two books? bc all i remember is darlington with his horns :D

lowkey I feel like I'm in the minority, but this trilogy was not it. I guess I couldn't connect to the writing and then the fact that I didn't remember much from the first two books. It's on me, so don't let this rating or review stop you because a lot people loved this because I know I'm one of few that feel the opposite.
---------
got the notification that this is now out...I need to find a way to get paws on it. low-key I don't even remember the plots from the first two which may be a small problem, but I just want to get it off my tbr so I don't feel guilty about not finishing this trilogy.

“The gentleman had no place here. Let the demon rule.”
I didn't just want to read this series; I wanted to live in it.
LOVED LOVED LOVED this trilogy! Dark Academia at its finest! Ninth House, Hell Bent, and Dead Beat all received five stars from me. I did not want the series to end. These books had me in such a chokehold; it was hard to go back to my daily life after being immersed in the magical world of Yale University and its secret societies located in downtown New Haven, CT. I am very familiar with the area; it was my old stomping grounds in my 20s. If the book intrigued you and you crave a lil more, do a Google search for “Secret societies of Yale New Haven University,” and prepare to fall down a rabbit hole as you dig through the information. Yes, these books are fiction, but they may contain more truth than you think. ::wink wink::
Mwah! 😘 Bardugo, here's me blowing you a kiss for an amazing trilogy - I loved every minute of it. And I swear, whenever you said something in Latin, I melted. lol
“You're prickly and strange and vexing and foul-mouthed and weird. It's thrilling."

one hell of a conclusion to an overall quite fantastic series. i am not sure what my exact feelings are about this particular book, but the lingering feeling is that, unfortunately, the saga failed to reach the potential it could have had in many ways - there are many things i wish had been done differently. however, i am quite certain that this universe and its marvels will stay with me for a long time, and there is nothing left for me to do after this except, maybe, enrolling in yale 🧐
