About the author

Bill Gunston was a British aviation and military author. He flew with Britain's Royal Air Force from 1945 to 1948, and after pilot training became a flying instructor. He spent most of his adult life doing research and writing on aircraft and aviation. He was the author of over 350 books and articles. His work included many books published by Salamander Books.

Het boek volgt grotendeels de geschiedenis van de luchtvaart maar is compleet anders ingevuld. Het staat niet zozeer stil bij de luchtvaartpioniers of de vliegtuigtypes, maar vertrekt vooral vanuit de vraag 'Hoe werkt een vliegtuig?'
De auteur doet zijn uiterste best om het antwoord op die vraag zo duidelijk mogelijk te brengen voor deze doelgroep (vanaf 10 jaar). De grote meerwaarde en aantrekkingskracht zijn de vele afbeeldingen, waaronder duidelijk opengewerkte tekeningen die de binnenkant van een heteluchtballon, een luchtschip of een vliegtuig tonen.
Een kind zal op z'n eentje ongetwijfeld veel opsteken maar de begeleiding van een volwassene in bepaalde technische termen zal soms geen overbodige luxe zijn.
De auteur geeft een mooie evolutie op verschillende vlakken zodat je een goed beeld krijgt hoe de moderne luchtvaart tot stand is gekomen: een evolutie in vliegtuigvormen, het type vleugels, enkele typen motoren, ... Daarnaast staat hij ook stil bij onderwerpen als de cockpit, de luchtverkeersleiding en radartechnologie.
Het boek is heel boeiend vorm gegeven en geeft een duidelijk overzicht van de belangrijkste processen die nodig zijn om een vliegtuig voort te stuwen, de lucht in te gaan, te besturen, te dalen en te remmen. Een absolute aanrader!

This is the last of a collection of books I had for introducing young people to flight. As with a couple of the other books, I found some areas errant, others poorly explained (I could hear a child asking the eternal question, "Why?", as I read these).

This book has the same author as one of the other books as well, and so my flight instructor's brain cringed once again at the "up-suck" theory of lift and some other slightly slanted silliness. Perhaps Mr. Gunston has simply attempted to explain too much in too small a space.
