I admit I didn't really know what to expect when I started reading this novel, but it was definitely better than I expected it would be!

Tori has really changed her life by quitting school and moving away from her traditional Chinese parents. While working in a book store she first notices him. The ghost of her dead brother. He's soon joined by the ghosts of her younger self. At that's only the start of The Festival of the Hungry Ghosts

This is easily one of the best books I've read this year. Check it out. The ending actually made me tear up in a good way. It is more than worth your time. ...more

The first three-quarters of the book are depressing in the most awful way. Embarrassing things happen. People who care about Tori start looking down on her. She ends up humiliated in front of friends and strangers alike. Her job starts to go badly. To be honest, I’m not entirely sure why I didn’t put the book down. It’s incredibly well-written–actually, that’s part of what makes it so hard to read. It’s impossible not to feel the depression and malaise and embarrassment and humiliation and frust ...more

Really great YA book--I definitely identified with being a sheltered young adult trying desperately to figure things out. The hungry ghosts were incorporated elegantly. I'm looking forward to reading more from this author. ...more

A book about depression that is seriously depressing. It's also uncomfortably accurate. ...more
Not my tastes I guess. Really boring.

The first few chapters also tried a little too hard at describing how different / special MC is. *yawn*
I received a copy of The Good Brother from Netgalley for review. This in no way influenced my review and/or rating.

Tori is haunted by her dead brother. Literally. He even possess her arm. Oh, also two of her past personalities are haunting her as well. Not only is she trying to deal with her family's disapproval, she now has the three ghosts giving their opinion on her current life. No one else can see them, and she is slowly going crazy (and being viewed as insane). Not even making new friends

Tori (Victoria, Mui Mui) is from a traditional Chinese family, although they live in Toronto. She has moved downtown, dropped out of school and is working in a bookstore. She is trying to find out who she wants to be, what she wants to be and have some fun. Her parents want her to go back to school and become a doctor. This is her internal fight as well. It is Yu-Lan (Festival of the Hungry Ghosts) and she is suddenly being haunted, not only by her dead older brother Seymour (Goh Goh) but by her ...more
