Stunning biography that reads like fiction. I don't understand why it's not widely read.

This is one of the best World War II memoirs I have read! She was just a Jewish child from a stable middle class home when the book begins and her story is an enlightening account of how the war changed her into the adult she became. At the end you almost feel you know her and want to know what happened to her after the ending of her memoir.

What an incredible story! Sonia was a young Polish girl, who for the early years of her life was not raised as a Jew. She encountered the truth when she was around 7 or 8. In 1939, Germany invaded Poland. As the war engulfed her world, Sonia and her family were trapped in a camp in Silesia, eventually ending up in the Czestochowa Ghetto. Sonia's father worked for one of the SS owned factories, and Sonia started smuggling food to help feed her family. The people were being rounded up and sent to other places. Sonia and her family managed to hide and escape. Eventually, in a random act of kindness, Sonia was plucked from the Ghetto by a German officer who thought she looked Aryan enough to try and survive. Amazingly enough, Sonia did survive. She was smart, independent, and brave enough to try almost anything to survive.
