ARC kindly provided by the author, in exchange for an honest review.
All the books in this series are out already individually, and this is a bundle of all three. I'm a little late at noticing this series, but thankfully got an Arc of this bundle that will be release on July 15th 2015. Therefore i would like to personal thank the author for providing me with a copy.
Now without further or do lets continue onto my review that is practically a rant, since i'm reviewing three books in one; so be warned.
The story:
Not only are we introduced to new characters and new situations in this series, but an entire different realm.. and that realm is named Purgatory.
The entire realm has a hierarchy of the different species, the two representatives of heaven and hell holding the top space; along with the angels and the demons. The species below being the Ghouls and the species on the bottom of the food chain are the quasi-demons.
Quasi-demons are half demon half human, each demon having one of the deadly sin's. On a rare occasion, they have two. Within the hierarchy quasi-demons are enslaved by Ghouls, the hooded skeleton look-a-likes. The existence of quasi-demons are now purely based to serve the Ghouls.
However that has not always been the case, the hierarchy used to be reversed between the two species. Quasi-demons use to rule Purgatory, but that all changed when The king of hell, Armageddon and the Ghouls made an alliance. An alliance that benefited both sides immensely and the quasi-demons poorly, and that's how the were treated.
The series focuses on the 18 year old, quasi-demon girl named Myla. Alongside attending school in which only teaches the ways to serve their future masters... the Ghouls, Myla fights in the Purgatory Arena.
Each dead soul has an option when they die, Trail by Jury or Trial by combat. They must select one to enter heaven or hell. When a soul selects Trail by Combat, they enter the Purgatory Arena. It's exactly what the title says it is, to avoid hell they have to win the fight. However that fight is not so easy, as they are up against the strongest selection of all the species. Demons, Quasi-demons and Ghouls. Upon entering the arena, the soul is presented with the selection of species and they must select one individual to duel with.
Most of the time the souls select Myla, when she is called to fight in the arena. This is because she presents herself as an easy target, the innocent girl who has been forced to fight in the arena and can easily be defeated. However its all an illusion, she's one of the strongest of her kind. she's yet to be defeated since she first step foot in the arena when she was 12 years old.
Myla lives for the times that she's called to serve in the arena, it's in her bones to fight... especially considering her demons deadly sin is wrath. She despises any future of her serving a master therefore she has no passion for school, her passion lies within that arena. That passion is noticed by the representatives of heaven and hell.. Venus and Armageddon. However the king of hell noticing Myla isn't always a positive response.
The ways of Purgatory begin to change, alliances are blurring, friends turn to enemies and plans are in play. Enter Lincoln, The High prince of Thax... half human, half-angel demon hunter. The Thax live on earth, hunting demons because they despise demons...even half demons such as quasi-demons. They completely ignore the fact that they are half human and instead detest the fact they are half demon.
As the ways of Purgatory change, all species begin to interact. At a party consisting of all species, Myla and Lincoln meet and hate each other on sight. This commences the love hate relationship, which i personally enjoyed and it was over to soon for my liking.
I utterly loved these characters and all of the secondary characters; they were very versatile and your guaranteed to love some and hate others, because the author created a vast ray of characters. It certainly happened to me, i hated some and i loved some... some of the one's i loved being the myla and Lincoln.
Myla was badass, defiant and quirky. She found freedom in a world full of rules and she truly developed as a person when she met Lincoln. They both did actually, they united and became a team. They were both fun and fascinating to read, as were their actions and dialogue. so bravo to the author for creating such entertaining characters as these were to read.
The story continues, with a new book in the series, called Scala and it takes place 6 month after Angelbound. The book focuses on the self discovery of Myla, the development of her relationship with Lincoln and challenges they are faced with as individuals and as a couple.
After finishing the previous book, it was a no doubter to continue on to this book. All questions i had were yet to be answered and i was in need of information. Plus i was extremely excited to see Myla and Lincoln develop as a couple, however i didn't see much of the development as i had hoped. This was due to the drama clouding their relationship, it could also be due to the frustration i had for the existence of book two.
My rating dropped from book one to two because the entire of book two didn't have to exists. The drama in book two could have been avoiding, by having the characters make a decision in the previous book. I'm probably not making sense, but i'm trying to avoid an outright spoiler. So instead i will provide a spoiler that doesn't give anything major away, but you understand how this can be frustrating as a a reader.
I lowed my rating because instead of actually enjoying the read, i was just sat being frustrated at how pointless the book was, all because of one decision. This lead me to seriously considering giving up the entire series, but i did overall want to find out how this series concludes for these character, so i continued. My decision to do so was successful as i did begin to enjoy the series again.
Armageddon Book three takes place 5 years in the future after Scala, and it's the perfect example of how the drama doesn't end at a happily ever after. It's not all peaches and cream. The positives of life come with the bad, especially for this couple, especially for the supernatural. Old faces are back with even more drama and problems, to end the series with a bang.. and a bang it was.
Any bit of information i provide on the content or the characters of this book will most likely consist of spoilers from book one and two. As the books all interrelate, therefore i will refrain from doing so; other than what i've already provided.
Despite my issues with book two and the negatives points i've made, i definitely was able to forget them and continue on to book three; and it enjoy it almost as much as i did with book one. So if the issues having also frustrated you, i recommend carrying on if even just to see the series conclude and the characters progress.
Since this a review on the bundle addition that includes the three main books in the series, i feel it is only fair to rate each book individually and together as a whole.
Book 1: Angelbound = 4 Stars
Book 2: Scala = 3 Stars
Book 3 Armageddon = 3.5 Stars
Entire Series = 3 Stars
I liked this series, but didn't love it. After reading book one the entire series definitely had potential, but sadly didn't meet my expectations. However with the content in this series, it's impossible to read one and not continue onto the next book unless you end up DNF the entire series. So i must give a positive to the author, for making fascinating characters that force the reader to follow their journey.
As always my opinions are my own and can differ to others, so the points i've made could be completely different to yours. Therefore i recommend reading these books yourself and who knows.. you might have a positive or negative response. There only one way to find out.. so if the synopsis has intrigued you.. give it ago and read it["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>
I really liked the plots of this trilogy and often found myself continuing to read until silly times in the wee small hours. My reason for giving four stars (truly 3.75) was predominantly due to the rather juvenile way Myla is presented throughout. She is a very strong character but the way she thinks/talks often leaves the impression that she is an airhead. However I did enjoy the trilogy and will happily recommend them to the YA audience as well as reading more Angelbound books myself.
I personally really liked this story, i think the biggest hurdle i had to hop was the writing. Not that it was bad but it was very colloquial if that makes sense. As in the Character would say thing like "it's time to Kick Ass" or "totes badass" or "Because I'm awesome" which is not the usual writing style for fantasy books.
After I got used to it, i began to enjoy it heaps.
I actually did things backwards, I read Maxon first and then after loving it, i had to backtrack and read about his parents. I'm glad I did, I really liked Lincoln and Myla!
My reaction for book one:- 3 stars! The Negative- The main protagonist is meant to be this crazy awesome 18 year old warrior but she came across as very juvenile...often. In really intense and dramatic scenes she'd say stuff like:- "Yea, we're totally smashing it!" or something like that. But it just made the whole experience kind of weird! who speaks like that anyway?
The positive- I will say the romance was cute and put a smile on my face! Also, that world-building! I love it, I mean, there isn't a lot of books on the market that has a world which is purgatory and that's where the main character lives! it was pretty cool.
Armageddon is a pretty intense Villain! who doesn't like a horrible villain that you genuinely hate in a book!?
Reaction for book Two:- 2 Stars hmmm, I wasn't too sold on this book, it took a left corner into a land of cliche. I will admit that I was more sedated, also that book two for me wasn't as amazing as I would have wished it to be, I was a bit disappointed. Probably the weaker book out of the three.
Reaction for book Three:- 3 stars Awesome ending to this series!
At first my heart thunder in fright because of the huge time gap between book two and this one. You see, book 1 and 2 had a gap of about 2-3 months in the story and with the characters, whereas this book had a time gap of about...5 years. I wasn't very happy, because we don't get Myla and Lincoln's wedding or we don't see Myla's reaction of becoming pregnant with Maxon (which would have been hilarious) Bauer please write some novellas!
At first my interest in the story was flitting but when the story picked up, it really became engaging again! I love Maxon, my heart melted every time the little cherub said something! I would've gone mad if Armageddon had abducted my kid too. Intense.
It's a great ending to this part of the story, I already read the next book which is about the now grown up Maxon, and I love it!
great stuff.
Quotes that melted my heart and a reason why you need to read this:-
" I don't want to be King without you as my Queen."
"I can't bear the thought of losing you, Myla, Wherever you go, that's where I want to be. Always..."
I totally swooned at those moments! I love Lincoln's and Myla's romance to pieces! Love it!
This bundle includes the 3 stories that make up the Angelbound Origins series. Each could be bought and read individually – while everyone’s definition of “stand alone novel” is slightly different, I personally believe that this is one series where starting at 1 and moving onward is necessary. Of course, if you have any intention of picking up the next Angelbound series Offspring – then this bundle is a very convenient way of grabbing all 3 novels in one shot.
I was very taken by the world building in this series. In a paranormal which includes demons and angels, and getting a glimpse of hell, the author really has to be able to visually take me into that environment. Reading is 90% imagination, but most of us need something to build on to make that imagination become realistic or the story falls apart… at least, that is my take on it. I had absolutely no doubts where I was or the horrors I was seeing throughout all three books.
The cover description gives a brief introduction to each story, so I don’t intend to rehash that. But I did enjoy the relationship between Myla and Lincoln as it grew from one thing and morphed into something totally different. It also helped that their romance was relatively drama free, there was enough of that in other aspects of the story. The secondary characters were very good compliments to the main characters. They didn’t take over the story, but instead enhanced it and enriched the main story.
If you are a fan of paranormal or even fantasy, then this would be a series I would recommend for you. Each novel takes you forward to a very rich and satisfying conclusion.
*I received an e-ARC of Angelbound Origins from the publisher and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. That does not change what I think of this novel.*
To ensure protection from spoilers, please view these reviews on my website if you are okay with them.
Four days ago, I talked about how I was going to Binge Read the Angelbound Origin series that weekend. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to complete it by the end of the weekend (obviously), nor was I able to complete it quickly after. On Sunday, I realized that the first book was over 500 pages, and I wasn't able to complete it until 2AM on Monday. Still suffering from the book hangover later that day, I definitely wasn't in the mindset to read another book. I soon continued with the second book on Tuesday, and just finished the last of the series tonight.
So I had a free copy of angelbound through Bookbub but it wouldn't open. So I checked the reviews and the individual cost and bought books 1-3 but somehow really 5(?) in this box set. I say through 5 since I was able to read Darklands. All of the stories were really good. Not a lot of fillers or synopsis of what happened in the previous chapter. . .until you get to book 5, that is. There is a major plot issue between book 2 and 3 if book 2 is about Adair and book 3 is about her father, Aldred that is not really important to the outcome of the book but does really mess up your enjoyment for a chapter or so. Book 5 has many missed words or wrong words that stopped me cold and example is: She placed a call button to her mother
Did she place a call to her mother? Use the call button for her mother? Hit the button to call her mother? That kind of stuff I counted 17 of those type of errors and I know I missed some.
Overall though it is a good read and I am buying book six but I wish I could get on the pre read list to clear up some of these issues before they get published because then the writer has moved on the the next book and not doing cleanups.
Fantasy is generally my favorite genre so I'm always on the lookout for more such series to read, to delve into a new magical world.
The story follows the eventful changes in the life of Myla Lewis, who is part human and part demon. She meets Lincoln and through the course of these three books, you see their personalities uncover and evolve, which I found enjoyable. Myla is very straightforward and her snarkiness keeps the tone upbeat. The romance (and more) scenes of the couple are well written but the unfurling of that part of their lives I found to be frustrating and (spoiler!) some of their shows of affection can be a bit cringy!
There's not a lot of detail for some supporting characters but maybe that is covered in later books. There is a variation of the concepts of heaven, hell, earth, god, angels, demons, the devil, etc. which is always interesting.
I'd recommend starting this series if you are ready to be welcomed into a new fantasy world (sometimes I'm not in that headspace!).
Got a couple of other things to read, then I hope to get back to the remaining books in the series.
First off I need to say that I loved this story! I liked the characters, or I really liked hating them. I look forward to reading other books by this author.
However, this particular set could have done with another go over from a proofreader. There are various grammatical errors and autocorrect mistakes as well as factual inconsistencies. I’m willing to accept a lot and over look imperfections but there was a LOT, so I feel I need to mention it. Additionally, I felt like the author didn’t trust me as a reader. What I mean is that things which had previously been explained get re-explained constantly. Every few chapters or so information is rehashed almost verbatim. Lastly, I appreciated the level of world building or at least understanding of the world that these characters live in. It was easy to buy into and accept.
I have read many books, this one was unique. Strong independent characters and a world I could have never imagined. Myla is amazing, funny, sassy, but down to business when fighting...and Lincoln, tall dark and handsome and really smart, clever and noble. His love for My la he refuses to hide and it makes him all the more sexy. Together they are dynamic and I can't wait to read more about them.
Reading for the second time since this is part of the 1-3 boxset and it's been a few years since I originally read it. I did enjoy the story of Myla and her kick-arse-ness, as well as her romance with Lincoln.
AngelBound Epilogue/Extended Scene - 2.5 stars.
Crazy handful of chapters involving politics and Myla saving the day.
Scala - DNS
The epilogue from the first book really put me off starting more of this series, weirdly.
Take the idea of a traditional Disney fairy story with some kings and queens. To the mix add a good helping of demons and other satanic beings. Decorate all of this with a little rock and roll lifestyle and a wild imagination and you will have the beginnings of what is included in these stories. All that is missing is a star studded cast to turn these three stories into a blockbuster film
The premise of this series is the angel's verses the demons with the people's of the other 2 types trying to keep the demons down and not making trouble.
Great read. Books 1-3 really make me want to the bow this series ends. I love the hatred toward the male character while she was thinking he was maybe good looking. Kickass girl hero who can hold her own and finds a man who complimented he who she is.
More like 4.5 stars!!! I wish there was an audiobook for the next two books. I just finished the first one and it was sooo good, I couldn't put it down!!
*The publisher provided this book in exchange for an honest review through NetGalley.* Myla Lewis lives in Purgatory and she wants to kick ass for a living in Purgatory's Arena. She's a quasi-demon, part-demon and part-human but mostly she's a girl. One day she meets Prince Lincoln, an charming and sensual half-angel and half-human demon hunter that she is intrigued by. But will she be able to love a royal demon-hunter? Will he love her? Join Myla while she discovers herself and while she unearths some deeply sealed secrets from her family and her town's past. This is a serires review, since I read abind-up copy of it, so I'll try not to disclose anything that might spoil you while also being faithful to the grandeur of the whole series. Myla is an obstinated teenager, as many of us are or were, and the only thing she likes to do is fight, since she is part of a race that is enslaved and the only thong she learns in school is how to take care of her furture masters. On the opposite side, Prince Lincoln is admired by all and is the sucessor of his fathers very powerful rule. Everybody loves him and he grew up without being stepped on and forgotten about. It is amazing to see how this two very different persons collide against each other and try to accept the other. Even though they are both fearless warriors they both come from very different worlds and realities. The writting is beautiful and it's very easy to immerse yourself in the storyline! This is an action packed series and that's a good thing because you'll love all the events that go on in this fictional universe that are the after-realms and how intricate and complex they really are. If you love action, love, friendship and family values then this is a great series for you! Even if you think you might not like it please give it a try because it's really woth it.
Let me start off by saying I really enjoyed this series. I ADORED the concept, it was original and unique and I had never read another series or viewed another series like it. Set in Purgatory this story follows a teenage half demon, Myla, and her evolution into something great and powerful. It pits heaven against hell and purgatory is the battle ground though also a contender in the battle. There's a little bit of romance, lots of intrigue, secrets kept and revealed and some fascinating underworld politics.
But, the dialogue! Oh, the dialogue! Myla speaks like an idiot and Christina Bauer breaks some cardinal rules writing her thoughts and dialogue. Daaaaaaaaaaaaamn, should NEVER exist on paper. I can understand if Myla speaks in slang, or has a specific dialect, even if she needs to sounds like a tv-esque California surfer dude, but there are literary techniques that could get that point across without actually writing it out. This is consistent through the series. It does not go away. I felt that it hurt the story more than it helped it. Every time I had to read a word dragged out over 15 letters I was rolling my eyes, groaning internally and contemplating turning the book in to the "I-gave-it-a-shot" shelf.
I am grateful that I did not. As I said, I really enjoyed the story and I read it voraciously over a weekend, again, very perturbed when interrupted. Stick with it, the storyline, the concept, that little hint of romance, will carry you past the dialogues weak points.
I absolutely enjoyed this omnibus. I give credit to Christina in her vision of the afterlife and the tribulations that this section may face. It is in fact one I have never read before. The complete story arch in how little strands were dangling in each book and as each were pulled and followed and tied together followed how thy came to be in the past and were actually started.
This book caught me from the very beginning and held me straight to the end. WARNING: You will need tissues. And no throwing the kindle when you get angry!! You may also lose some needed sleep so when you see you are at the begging of a chapter turn off you reader so you can get in a few hours.
There I think that covers most of my warnings. (giggles) As I said I really enjoyed this book and now have a new author to add to my reading pool.
This series of books was addictive, could not put it down till I finished! Love the way the different type of characters merge together. There are lots of twists in the plot that makes it intriguing and exciting. This is action packed paranormal romance that will make you crave for more. The star-crossed lovers make a very interesting and appealing aspect of the book. The way they handle adversity is inspiring. This is great for young adults, and as a gift for someone who likes paranormal romances. Would love to read more from this author. Looking forward for the next book. I received this series free from NetGalley for review purposes.
Books one through three in one book. This is a really good, well thought out fantasy world. The characters are well fleshed out right from the beginning. The love story is subtle and amusing. Now I'm going to read about the son.
