I started reading Ms Jennifer Haymore when I came across her A Highlander's Heart, book 0.5 of her Highland Knights series. I really liked the book, so I have followed the series, including the novella so far. I have to say none of the later books appeals to me as much as book 0.5 did. I have been wondering why, but I think now I know.

Cam, our hero is part of the Highland Knights, who are a elite mercenary group. He is a very strong Alpha hero in this story. Very determined at at times to a point I found off putting.

Lady Esme, our heroine is a very awkward and shy young spinster. Her brother, the Duke of Trent was one of the most influential men in England and Esme wanted to only make her brother proud and cause no scandal, especially after a past incident had tainted her and the fa Netgalley for an honest review.

Cam, our hero is part of the Highland Knights, who are a elite mercenary group. He is a very strong Alpha hero in this story. Very determined at at times to a point I found off putting.

Lady Esme, our heroine is a very awkward and shy young spinster. Her brother, the Duke of Trent was one of the most influential men in England and Esme wanted to only make her brother proud and cause no scandal, especially after a past incident had tainted her and the family name.

We open with Cam at a high class brothel protecting Viscount Pinfield. Cam is standing guard by the door of Pinfield's bedroom when a couple women enter through the corridor. This is where Lady Esme comes in as she is doing research for her book. Lady Esme writes erotic stories and keeps it a well guarded secret as it would destroy her and her families good name. Cam and Esme meet and we have instant attraction and lust. The two share a kiss and both are strongly effected by the kiss. Cam is curious about the note book that Esme hold/guards, he asks what the contents are and she becomes fearful and runs.

The two meet again at a party her brother is throwing and Cam learns that Esme is engaged to Henry, a gentleman who he knew from his years at Eton. We have a very determined Cam who sets out to prove to Esme that she really desires and wants him not Henry. Cam goes to great lengths to make his desire for our heroine very clear.

The story progress from there as Cam goes about proving his point to Esme and I found some of his actions bothersome and a little over the top. We have a bit of a mystery and suspence interwoven through the story as someone one of the Highland Knights were murdered and the group is also being attacked.

The pacing was good. But I had problems with the two main characters. I didn't really care for the opening scene, it almost felt like I was dropped into the middle of a story and it was somewhat confusing. As for the characters, I'll start with Esme, she came across as weak and immature at times. As for Cam, he came across as more of a brute then alpha male, sorry but his actions at times just seemed off putting. The story and plot were okay. But I did at times I found myself, in some scenes, confused and puzzled by what just transpired.

I would have to say this was the least favorite of the series so far. Still like the author and have found past books enjoyable and will continue to read future book.

I really liked this one and I'm so happy I got to read it before the release time (THANK YOU NETGALLEY).
I'm still loving the 2nd book a little bit better but I can't wait for the fourth book in the series.
I wouldn't recommend this series if it wasn't this good.
I kid you not, you will not want to fall asleep once you start. They're all pretty much standalone so you don't need to read in order.

This is only the second book I have read by Jennifer and I will be buying the rest of "The Highland Knights" series to add to my TBR list. A wonderful story of adventure, romance, and true love.

Another good read by Jennifer Haymore. This one ties together this series and her House of Trent series by hooking Cam McLeod up with Lady Esme Hawkins.

I have been waiting to read Esme's book after meeting her in the 'House of Trent' series, and then pairing her up with a highland knight, that was double the fun.

As usual Jennifer Haymore has a technique that when you start reading one of her books you don't want to put it down. I really enjoyed seeing Trent and Sam also make an appearance in this book.

The Highland Knights are a group of soldiers who have come home from Waterloo and banded together as a mercenary group to conduct special assignments for the Crown. In this installment, the Knights' assignment is to guard the odious Lord Pinfield, who has been receiving threats against his life. While performing his guarding assignment, Camden McLeod, our hero, keeps running across Lady Esme Hawkins, our heroine. I really liked Camden's character. Having shunned his father, and society, due to their questionable values, Cam is an honorable sort unlike the masses of male chauvinists and adulterers common for the time. I loved the way that he took care of his sister, Anna, and vowed to not treat women as his father, the Earl of Sutton, treated his mother. His somewhat gruff and bulldozing ways also endeared him to me, even though they sent Esme running the other way on occasion.

Our heroine, Esme Hawkins, is the youngest sibling of the House of Trent. So this book is kind of a spinoff from that series, because there is a lot of character crossover and detail mentioned about those books. I have yet to read them, so I felt I was lacking some backstory. But despite that, I still enjoyed this romance. Esme is a bit of a tortured heroine due to some events that have happened in her past (which I assume are detailed in the Trent books). She is shy and awkward and never says the right thing. She tends to be a bit of a klutz at societal events. But she has a hidden passionate side and has secretly authored a number of romance novels. I liked Esme and could totally relate to her klutzy social awkwardness. I just wish I had read the Trent books so that I was more informed about her history and family life.

I loved the relationship between Esme and Cam. He was a bit of a steamroller when it came to obtaining what he wanted, namely, Esme. The chemistry between the two was sweetly passionate... but the steam built to an explosive point quickly. I liked that these books have been more on the erotic side than mainstream historical romances. I loved that Cam's initimate preferences matched his demeanor and personality... and they certainly kept me riveted on the very early morning flight. I look forward to Colin's story next in Highland Temptation.

I felt that the story was well written, grabbing my attention from the first few pages and it held my interest throughout. It was a very satisfying read. The characters play well off each other and I found them to be believable, in that this could have happened. Although, some of the actions of the heroine could be construed as a little far-fetched; but, it played well into the whole story.

I have been waiting for Esme’s story ever since she was introduced in The Duchess Hunt, another fabulous book, by the way. I fell in love with her character and have enjoyed her in each of the House of Trent books. Her story is as engaging, and her character as endearing as I expected.

Lady Esme writes racy romance novels, but her family does not know. Neither does her fiancée. When she meets Camden McLeod in a bordello where she is doing research for her books, her attraction to him has her questioning her decision to marry her betrothed.

Camden McLeod, a Highland Knight sworn to protect the crown, is immediately enchanted by the innocent young woman he meets in of all places, a bordello. To win her heart, he will have to change his rakish ways, but it will be worth.

Will Camden’s manipulative ways ruin his chance to win the heart of sweet Esme, or will they keep them apart?

I fell in love with Camden’s character from the start. He is everything I want in a hero. He is loyal to his brother in arms, a protector of the ones he loves, and he is a rugged highlander. While he never expected to fall in love, he is unable to resist Esme. His misguided ways of protecting her cause him problems, but his heart is in the right place. For me, that makes him an engaging, yet flawed character.

The attraction between the hero and heroine is combustible. Ms. Haymore is a master at building sexual tension, and this book is an excellent example of her talents. I truly wanted Esme and Camden to find their happy ending. While the love scenes are explicit, they focus on the emotions behind the act, making them enticing.

I enjoyed seeing a glimpse into Simon and Sarah’s life. You can read about their love affair in The Duchess Hunt. I highly recommend Highland Awakening for all readers who love Regency romances with unforgettable characters and a well-developed story. You will love this wonderful novel as much as I. The mysterious air surrounding Esme intrigues him, and he is drawn to find her. Esme's secrets could create problems for her family and she is desperate to keep them hidden. Great hero but bland heroine. Esme was interesting but I never developed that much liking for her. The best parts of the novel were the ones that included her brother Trent, sister in law Sarah and their 2 sons. All I can say is FINALLY! Lady Esme Hawkins story is here! I couldn’t wait to learn more about Esme because she’s a secret author who wrote racy romances! Esme went to great lengths to go to a notorious brothel and chat with the women who work there in order for her novels to be realistically steamy. She put her reputation and her safety on the line in order to follow her passion and I couldn’t help but love her for that. My favorite thing about Esme aside from her being a writer was that she was socially awkward and as someone who is also socially awkward, I felt this was a great way to make Esme more relatable.

Cam on the other hand was secretive in the beginning, middle and ending. Even at the end of Highland Awakening I felt like I didn’t know much about this character. However, author Jennifer Haymore showed more than told the few bits about Cam that were the most important. He loved his brother knights and his sister more than anything. When his sister’s past was revealed it showed a kindness in Cam and displayed his unwavering loyalty to those he loved. He was genuinely flawed but even his flaws made him appealing to be honest. I liked that he was proud, a bit arrogant and of course Scottish but I also liked that he had an insecure side that was fed by his guilt over some of his mistakes.

As a couple I could see where Cam and Esme’s relationship may seem like a case of insta-love but because I was paying close attention to the development of said relationship I feel like it was more a case of insta-LUST (Which I don’t mind at all) with a heavy dose of infatuation on Esme’s part and fascination on Cam’s. These two learned each other’s deepest, darkest secrets first, accepted them and then decided that they could learn the little things about each other later on in life. They really didn’t know each other all that well but it honestly worked for me that these two would learn and accept each other’s biggest secrets and then learn all the little, insignificant things later. I’m glad that Haymore didn’t keep Esme and Cam’s secrets until the very end where they would serve as silly obstacles to their happiness. Instead she saved something far more interesting as an obstacle.

I’ve read the House of Trent series, where Esme’s family comes in AND the Highland Knights series where Cam’s fellow Knights are introduced and I can say that Highland Awakening is a delightful combination of two very different series’. At the same time I think this book had a higher heat level just because Cam was a bit of a dirty talker. I don’t recall any of the Hawkins brothers or the Highland Knights being er, earthy. So yeah, bonus points for Cam.

While I had the antagonist’s identity figured out about halfway through Highland Awakening, the reason was a bit surprising and the breaking point/confrontation was pretty suspenseful for me. I also enjoyed meeting some secondary characters that I’m hoping will get a chance to find happy endings too. Most notably Cam’s sister Anna and Lady Emilia Buchanan.

Final Verdict: I love Haymore’s historical romances, they’re tender, tempting and touching but at the same time each book is different. I feel like Highland Awakening is the best of the Highland Knights series but that could be because it had Lady Esme Hawkins as the heroine and the Hawkins are among my top 10 favorite fictional families ever. Oh and did I mention Lady Esme's romance stories are available as novellas? Yup, you can read exactly what she was working on in One Night with the Earl and The Devil's Pearl ...more

It was amusing to read and despite some little things that I didn't like it was a nice read. Camden had his moments he could be a bit of a turd, he was manipulative and while his intentions were in the right place that whole situation was off putting. But I liked the way Esme handled it. The main storyline (aside from the romance) was a little heartbreaking, (why!?!?! why did you do it?!?!) and very exciting.

Things are slow for the secret spy organization Highland Knights they are stuck babysitting a pompous Lord who has been getting threats. While babysitting one night at the Lord's favorite brothel Camden McLeod runs into a beautiful cloaked girl. He never catches her name but one forbidden kiss later and he can't stop thinking about her. To his surprise the next night he discovers her identity as Lady Esme Hawkins the young sister of the Duke of Trent. Cam knew he wanted Esme but after spending time with her just talking and getting to know her he knew one night just wouldn't be enough. The only problem she's already engaged to some boring and drool man who clearly isn't good enough for her. And que the first manipulation. Esme has a secret, she is a published writer. She writes under a pen name and she has told no-one until now. But then her fiance finds out and dumps her she feels it's the right time to confess to her brother and sister-in-law. Furious because the only way her fiance could have found out was from Cam she confronts him. Cam distracts her by seducing her. Cam realizes he can't live without Esme and proceeds the only why he knows how by taking control of the situation, and cue the second manipulation. Meanwhile, the Highland Knights are being attacked and as much as Cam wants to get down to the bottom of this he keeps getting distracted by Esme.

Overall, I liked it and I'm enjoying the series and look forward to the other. ...more

I truly enjoy Jennifer Haymore's style. I think she's an extremelly talented author, her novels are fast-paced, thrilling, hot and emotional.

Said that, I relly liked Highland Awakening; I was waiting for Esme's story, I wanted her character to be more developed and to have an happy ending, since the first House of Trent novel. Same for Cam McLeod, he's a very charming hero.

A very good book with lots of passion, mystery and drama. Lady Esme must marry a man her family has picked for her but this is the way it was done back then it wasn’t about love but about what one family will get out of an arrange marriage. Lady Esme is ok with that knowing she won’t have to see her husband that much. It felt really good reading a historical romance again- it has been a long time since I read one.
This book reminded me why I LOVED reading historicals to begin with!!!

This book was solid. Cam and Esme were likeable characters and the chemistry was believable. I thought the sub-plot of someone trying to injure/kill the Knights was a little unnecessary, but not so much as to ruin the book. The relationship between the 2 of them was developed, even though he was a bit of a stalker, albeit in a harmless way.

This historical romance nearly melted my kindle. It is part of a series, but you could easily read it as a stand alone. It does mention others from previous books who have had their HEA so it might spoil those books just a little.
