You have to admire an author who decides to rank his own book as #1 in the title.

This is more of a book on framework. It is full of lists or nuggets of good advice. It tells you why appraisals are important, as if you didn't know since you're reading the book. It also touches on some of the recent performance techniques, such as the 360 review. His opinion reflects the problems with the review. He is correct in that it is too easy to misuse it and allow it to become a popularity contest.

One nugget has to do with coaching and follow-up. Without either, you lose one of the advantages of a performance system - to improve the employee.
