Let me tell you something first, i couldn't survive in the Blame! world like 15 minutes... They invented incredible things, it's a Cyberpunk manga but they couldn't invent railings for some reason. There are these mega structures of an endless city which was made out of parts called stratas and there isn't one single railing at the side of the stairs or bridges in anywhere... lol i would fall... lol

Kidding asside it was an incredible manga... Mangaka prefer to tell the story mostly by art,

Tsutomu Nihei's beautifully drawn and interestingly conceived series Blame! landed poorly for me, squarely where I was hoping it would not land...
I enjoy ambiguous narratives (Lynch's Lost Highway is an all time favorite, and I like Panos, Jodorowsky, and Yorgos movies quite a bit), and I enjoy interesting science fiction (especially hard stuff like Greg Egan and Stephen Baxter), but from the third (Master Edition) volume of Blame! onward, I was concerned that rather than resolve the interesting

I've come to the conclusion that this series should be read purely for its visual qualities, rather than for its story and characters. The series' story doesn't make much sense to me, but it was visually interesting.

3/5 stars ~

0/1 for plot
0/1 for characters and character development
1/1 for art
1/1 for pace
1/1 for world-building

The final volume of Blame! doesn't offer as much of an explanation as I'd like, but overall it was a crazy ride I would do all over again. Below is an explanation of what happens, so beware of spoilers.

I don't know how or why is Sanakin is an agent of the Administration now because she was a Safeguard and she died in Toha Heavy Industries. I don't know why the Builder protecting Cibo

I love how desolate and empty the environments in this volume are.

I'd buy an artbook of just background areas by this artist.

this series continues to be wonderfully stark and cold, and incredibly beautiful in design. I love the emptiness of this story, coupled with the desperation of the search for the net terminal gene - it makes my blood run cold, and I love every single page of it.

This series ultimately proved fascinating and frustrating at the same time. The summaries are essential reading--I tried reading one of the books without reading the summary until afterward and was astounded by what I failed to understand in the development of the story. I thoroughly enjoyed Nihei's expansive spaces and his imaginative characters, but action scenes tended to repeat themselves and how anyone managed to decipher the plot without inside information is utterly beyond me.

I claimed my

The last master volume in the series... I am left with sense impressions. This city is so huge. It easily extends across a star system, probably ours. What happens to digital life when we, the builders, die? What is the impact of the replication of life in silicon format? Will viruses mutate the silicon form or become a form unto themselves? And what is the benefit and role of the user or humanity in this frame?

I loved ReBoot which plumbed some of these depths in a more humorous way but the

Not with a bang but with a whimper.
I am sad to say that the final volume of Blame! is by far the weakest. It starts with a pretty good chapter and the last few chapters are also quite good, but in between, more than half the book is just obvious filler to keep the manga coming out regularly while Nihei figures out how he wanted to end it.
Both story, or lack there of as well as the quality of the art dips a fair bit, while it climbs again towards the end.

Still, I do love me some Nihei art, even

A strange, haunting and a little humorous end for the the series. Enjoyed it a lot, had no idea how it could’ve possibly ended but Nihei found a way. This series is so beautiful. I know most will find the incoherent/secondary plot to be frustrating but I enjoyed the mystery of the strange Sci Fi hell scale more than just a simple, typical heroic story. Loved that it just wound and wound and never really could be predicted.

Shelves: manga
Although this manga is very beautiful (even if in its own deviant way) it either lacks meaning and consistency or I am not smart enough to grasp it or the author has some issues. I really liked the beginning of the story, there was enough room for ruminations about lore and its mysteries. But then, after the second or third volume, there became far more than enough room for all that. And it has never been resolved as from my point of view.

Overall this series was good, but I feel more than a little confused by the ending.

Kyrii's mission in this manga was to locate a human with the Net Terminal Gene and despite everything, I don't think he ever did. I wish the story had been a little clearer and we had a little more history however this is one of those manga that's definitely more action than words.

I had to finish this last volume in one sitting. Incredible story, incredible artwork. The sense of wonder Blame! inspires is unique and truly epic. I hadn’t ever read manga before picking up the first volume of this story (after watching the Netflix anime) but I am glad I stumbled upon it. So freakin cool!

Cool art style, and interesting story telling. Though I think maybe at the time of reading I wasn't patient enough and missed a lot of intricacies? I feel I didn't get a good grasp of the story. I'm going to watch the movie next and hopefully that will clarify things.

Sadly the ending left a lot to be desired as to an explanation of things, but it was still a wild ride well worthy of a look.

The entire series is a must read for those who love Cyberpunk and Dystopian art and story. More art in this series than story though.

Very visually stunning final installment to the manga - with a lot of expansive vistas (and a penultimate chapter that feels like a reference to Angel's Egg - which I appreciated).

...more
