Salem's Rise: A Dark Romantic Thriller
PLAY THE GAME. TRY NOT TO DIE.
One year ago, Jacqueline's brother vanished without a trace. The police called it an accident. Jacqueline knows better. His last message came from Salem’s Fall—a small New England town steeped in occult rituals and dark traditions. Determined to uncover the truth, Jacqueline enrolls at its elite university. Instead, she discovers a world she was never meant to see. Behind the school’s prestigious reputation lies the Veil, a secret society controlled by the town’s most powerful families—and their heirs rule the campus like kings.
To find her brother, Jacqueline must enter The Rites, a deadly competition where she becomes the most hunted player in the game. One winner will inherit unimaginable power. Most will die. Her only hope? Silas Blackhollow. Cruel. Untouchable. The beautiful monster everyone fears. The Rites are deadly. But trusting Silas Blackhollow may be even deadlier.

I was so excited to return back to Salem's Fall, and I absolutely loved this story. Probably my favorite book by Rektok Ross so far. I binge read this in just a few hours because I absolutely couldn't put it down. Our main character enters Salem's Fall and the University with a mission of solving her brother's disappearance. However, she soon realizes that the University is way more than meets the eye, full of elites and secret societies. The author does an amazing job at leaving little breadcrumbs all throughout the story to keep you invested in the mystery as you are reading the story. The twists, the secrets, the darker vibes.... I just at this one up. This was such a perfect read especially for the fall/Halloween season. Dark, addictive, atmospheric, and completely bingeable.
WHAT TO EXPECT

"If this 'alliance' gets me killed, I'm going to haunt you."
"You already do."

I am reviewing this book as a stand alone. I have not read the others in this series. It's an interconnected series.
The MFC saves up all her money to get into this prestigious academy for the higher ups in society... The same academy that her brother had disappeared from a year ago. Desperate for answers, she attends only to find out more about the events that lead to the vanishing of her sibling. The MMC is part of the high society life that everyone wants a part of. He can command a room with looks alone and is the epitome of charm and danger... And he knows a lot more than he claims.
This was a fun read based on the historically infamous Salem Witch Trials. A lot of the historic events were referenced throughout the book although watered down. This felt more like a cozy romance mystery with some thriller elements. Fans of gothic academy, deadly trials, supernatural abilities, rivals to lovers, secret society, and morally grey billionaire MMC would be fans of this book.
Trigger warnings include loss of loved ones & on-page death. This book contains mild spicy scenes.
I received an ARC of this book and I am leaving my review voluntarily.

First, I am a little late to the party this time. Secondly, while we return to Salem's Fall in this one, you do not really need to read the other book first - I would recommend it, because it is just AWESOME, but Salem's Rise also works without any prior knowledge in my very humble opinion.
Anyway, whatever you decide, GO AND READ THIS BOOK! Go and follow Jacqueline 'Jack' as she enrolls Salem’s Fall University to find her lost brother. And as she must enter a secret society and a deadly competition in order to get some of the answers she is searching for so desperatly....
This is the perfect book for spooky season - a small town with occult vibes and a lot of secrets, a hot mysterious guy (Silas), enemies turning to lovers, a dark academia setting and even some magic woven inbetween. I can only very much recommend it!

PLAY THE GAME. TRY NOT TO DIE.
🥀 A dark wintery gothic setting at a university with a history of people disappearing.
🥀 A secret society with deadly games and ancient rituals wrapped in a world of wealth, power and influence.
🥀 A girl looking to solve the mystery of what happened to her missing brother.
Salem's Rise is everything and nothing I thought it would be, all at once. A world of danger and mystery, surprises around every corner, a fight for survival. Nothing is what it seems, no one is who you expect, leaving you questioning everything you think you know and not knowing who to trust. Things happen with a sharp, measured precision, emotions guarded and controlled, walls built high for self-preservation. There's a sense of terror beneath the surface, waiting for just the right moment to strike.
Intriguing, right? Ultimately, this is a story about trust and betrayal, secrets and lies, grief and guilt, the danger of power and what you would do to protect someone you care about. What would you sacrifice? Is love a weakness or can it be your greatest source of strength?
Just a note on the spice... There is one on-page open door scene that's new for this author. As someone who reads spice regularly, I will say it was FLAWLESS! It added seamlessly to the plot without overshadowing it.
As for the series, I have not (yet) read Salem's Fall and I had no trouble understanding and becoming fully immersed in this world. And, yes, I will be going back to read that book too.
With a strong, determined FMC, a deliciously cruel yet complicated MMC, snarky banter and constant tension seconds away from snapping, I loved this book! And I was completely blown away by the ending!
“One way or another, Salem’s Fall always brings its people home.”

It was so much fun getting to step back into the world of Salem in this new standalone set in the same universe as Salem’s Fall! This time we are following Jacqueline, aka Jack, as she enrolls in an elite university to uncover the mystery of her missing brother. Nothing is as it seems in this town, and things just get weirder and weirder for Jack the more she inserts herself where she doesn’t belong. The twisty mystery had me hooked, but the implementation of the secret society was a lot of fun and totally unexpected. I would highly recommend reading Salem’s Fall first only because it really helps set the groundwork for a lot of the characters and their background. This one even had a little bit of spice which was a nice addition. Pick this one up just in time for spooky season!

The Hunger Games meets Phantasma in this dangerously addictive gothic romantic thriller packed with deadly games, elite secret societies, enemies-to-lovers tension, and a morally grey billionaire heir you should never trust—but won’t be able to resist.

I was so excited to return to Salems Fall. Jack does everything she can to get accepted to SFU after her brother's disappearance last Halloween. Jack doesn't understand anything about Salems Fall. I loved the mystery, the secrets, the stubbornness of Jack. The betrayal, the heartbreak, the protection she thinks is hate. It all leads to how the mystery unfolds. The heirs try to warn her away, the professors don't like her questions. It's a long fought battle for the HEA that Jack seeks. Another 6 star read for me from Rektok, even though you can only give 5 stars.

This was my first book by Rektok. I was throughly blow away.
Salem's Rise, while a standalone, is Book 2. One year ago, Jack's brother mysteriously disappeared without a trace. She's determined to uncover the truth about what happened to him. It lands her in Salem's Fall, a small town steeped in dark traditions. In Salem's Fall The Veil rules all. To find her brother, she is forced to enter The Rites, a deadly competition The Veil puts on. Silas Blackhollow (Damien & James' son) is her competition. He's entitled, arrogant, rude and he's one of the people she suspects. Yet the very man she hates might just be the one person that can help her through the trials and find her brother. Yes, The Rites are deadly. But Silas Blackhollow may be worse.
**************************************************
For this being book 2, the world building is phenomenal. I tend to stay away from more complex magic books simply because I end up getting confused or lose track. There's so much woven into this story, yet not once did I find myself going "who's that" or "what can they do again" and I think it's because a lot of it is delivered as surprises or twists. And it WORKS. There was always a what's next moment or a secret or truth being uncovered. It definitely kept me on the edge of my seat.
It is only one POV, so we only get Jack's version of events and honestly I loved that. I was constantly going ooooo I wonder what Silas is thinking and it kept me hooked. Every time he revealed just a bit more tenderness towards her, it was a surprise. I was kicking my feet for her 😩
I don't want to spoil too much, but the ending was so heartbreaking. Having to watch Jack make that unbearable choice was gut wrenching. And Silas doing what he did? Gold star. No notes. And that last final scene? I screamed.
While you don't have to read book 1 first, I recommend you do. I kind of wish I did and I'll definitely be going back to read it. My last question though is....Does Lucian get a book? 👀
Thank you again to Rektok Ross for giving me this ARC to read. I very much enjoyed it.
Happy Reading 🌻

I went into Salem’s Rise expecting a spooky, mysterious read, and it definitely delivered. 4.25 ⭐️ for me!!
Jacqueline comes to Salem’s Fall looking for answers about her missing brother, Josh, but ends up discovering an elite university, secret societies, deadly Rites, and a town where nothing is quite what it seems. I was hooked from the beginning and stayed invested until the very end because I was genuinely curious about everything. There were subtle hints throughout, but there was always something else happening that made me put those pieces aside until they actually mattered. I loved the gothic atmosphere, dark academia, spooky town, secret societies, and especially the trials. The whole combination worked so well together and gave the book such a perfect Halloween vibe.
I will admit, Jacqueline did annoy me a little at first because she is stubborn and constantly going back and forth about who she can trust, including Silas. But honestly, I understood her because Salem’s Fall is mysterious and unsettling from the start, and she has every reason to be suspicious of everyone. Silas, on the other hand... those subtle hints and little things he says had me giggling!! I really enjoyed the mystery and the twists, and even when I thought I had something figured out, the story would take me somewhere else. My only wish was that we got a little more of the world, especially the founding families and the history behind everything. I know Salem’s Fall comes before this one about Silas' parents, so maybe some of that is explored there, but as this is my first book from the Author, I definitely wanted more from this world.
Overall, this was such a fun and spooky read, and I would definitely recommend picking it up closer to Halloween. The mystery, gothic atmosphere, secret societies, and Halloween setting make it feel like the perfect October read 🎃👻

As I entered Salem’s Rise my expectations were high and it delivered and then some. Absolutely a 5 star read for me! The main character enters Salem’s fall on a mission to find answers about the disappearance of her brother. She ends up finding so much more. The setting displays an elite high power university swarming with secret societies and a mysterious town filled with secrets. As a reader I was immediately drawn in and couldn’t put the novel down. The setting and atmosphere were perfectly created with descriptions that draw you in. Each step was filled with questions, turns and the things that make you think. Subtle pieces sprinkled around gave me the draw I needed to continue trying to find out what happened. If you’re looking for dark academia or a gothic pull this book is for you. You absolutely will not be disappointed.
The mysterious setting, the gothic town, it’s no wonder there was so many periods of questioning what was going on. But it was a magnetic pull that wouldn’t let me put it down. I wanted answers just as badly as Jacqueline did. If you haven’t read Salem’s Fall this may leave you wanting more. There is so much to still be discovered. Those who have read Salem’s Fall will be left wanting more. The history of Silas family though shared in Salem’s Fall will make you want to know more, a deeper dive into the history of the town.
Salem’s Rise is a perfect read for Spooky season and will leave you with moments of giggles and wanting to make a trip to Salem’s Fall. Overall a perfect Halloween read! If you’re looking for a gothic, enemies-to-lovers read pick this up you won’t be disappointed! I know I wasn’t!

🖤✨ Salem’s Rise by Rektok Ross — 5 ⭐️ Review ✨🖤
⚠️ Brief Spoiler Warning: I’ll be mentioning a couple of character moments and quotes, so if you haven’t read Salem’s Rise yet, proceed with caution! 🖤
Rektok Ross has a gift for creating incredibly detailed worlds, and Salem’s Rise is no exception. From the very beginning, I was completely captivated by this dark, magical world that exists hidden from the ordinary world—known only to the four houses and those connected to them.
The world-building is one of my favorite parts. There are so many layers, secrets, and details woven throughout the story that I constantly felt like there was something more waiting to be uncovered. I loved being pulled deeper into this mysterious world and discovering it alongside the characters.
And then there are the relationships. 🥹🖤 Watching Silas fall for Mercer through someone else’s eyes was such a beautiful touch. There’s something about seeing someone realize their feelings before they’re even ready to admit them that gets me every time.
“Don’t worry, Mercer. If you fall I’ll catch you.”
My heart. 😭🖤
And this line?
“I watched Silas fall for you through someone else’s eyes, Jack. He was nearly in love with you before he ever met you.”
ARE YOU KIDDING ME?! 😭
Those little emotional moments are what made the story hit even harder for me.
Salem’s Rise gave me everything I love about a dark fantasy: magic, secrets, hidden worlds, complicated relationships, immersive world-building, and characters who slowly steal your heart.
Rektok Ross once again proved that she knows how to build a world you can completely disappear into. By the time I finished, I wasn’t ready to leave it behind. 🖤
5 stars from me! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
If you love dark, magical worlds filled with secrets, powerful houses, emotional connections, and characters you can’t stop thinking about, add this one to your TBR. 📚🖤

Oh how I missed Salem’s Fall🙊🖤 the second I finished Salem’s Fall I was hoping we could get another book about this world, and even when I was hoping it would be about other characters (honestly, I even talked about this with the author 😩🙊) I’m so in love with Silas and Jaqueline’s story 😮💨🙂↕️
Their tension was off the charts and I loved the push and pull between them, Jack doesn’t trust Silas and Silas always makes her believes he doesn’t care about her, so that banter is just chefs kiss 🙊 I love their dynamics being partners in The Rites games but also trying to deny what they feel for each other while also trying to trust each other, because, ahem, one mistake can get them 💀
Again, the construction of the world is amazing, the suspense, the angst, the magic and secrets and the constant tension is just so good! And the only reason I didn’t finished this book in one sitting was because I’m trying to be a responsible adult who has working to do 😩🙈 other than that I would definitely devoted this book in less than a day because it’s just so addictive 😮💨🛐
And of course I have to mention that I complete loved having glimpses about Damien and James and Lucky too!!! 🥹❤️🖤and Lucien still being one of my favorites 👀🙂↕️ and yes, ima fill intrigued about him!!
Thank you so much for giving me the chance to read this book and of course I’m so excited about what’s coming next! Because yes! I’m hoping we’ll get another book about Salem’s Fall 🖤

Another Rektok Ross book?! Say less! She never disappoints, and let me tell you, Salem’s Rise had me in a chokehold from beginning to end and did not let go! I absolutely devoured this book, and it completely delivered. Salem’s Rise is packed with dark magic, suspense, dangerous trials, disappearances, secrets, and a love story woven into the chaos. When her brother disappeared from Salem’s Fall University, our FMC is determined to find him, after he vanished without a trace on Halloween night. But the deeper she digs, the more she realizes there is far more going on than she ever could have imagined. As she begins uncovering dark secrets, she discovers a connection to the Veil, dark magic, and sacrifices that have been made in ways she never knew existed. The stakes were incredibly high, the games were dangerous, and I constantly found myself questioning who could be trusted. Just when I thought I had things figured out, another secret or twist had me second guessing everything. I loved the dark and eerie atmosphere of this book, and the combination of magic, mystery, danger, and suspense kept me turning the pages. There was always another question waiting to be answered, and I needed to know what happened to her brother just as badly as she did! Salem’s Rise is the perfect spooky-season read and has everything I want in a dark paranormal story. If you’re looking for dark magic, dangerous secrets, disappearances, twisted trials, family revelations, and a story that keeps you guessing until the very end, you NEED to add this one to your TBR immediately!

A year ago, Jacqueline's brother vanished without a trace. His last known location was Salem's Fall a small New England town steeped in occult rituals and dark traditions. So, Jacqueline did what any other sibling would do; she embarked upon a journey to find answers surrounding her missing brother.
Enrolling as a student at an elite university she soon discovers a world she was never meant to see. Her prestigious university is controlled by a secret society known as the Veil who's founding families rule the campus like royalty.
In order to find answers Jacqueline must enter The Rites, a deadly competition where she becomes the most hunted player in the game; not because she doesn't belong, but because if she uncovers the truth she will level the playing field and the rules of the game will change. The winner of The Rites will inherit unimaginable power, but Jacqueline is not only interested in answers but power to change The Rites and Salem Falls completely.
Salem's Rise has all the gothic, dark academia vibes:
Small New England Town

Salem’s Rise by Rektok Ross was everything I wanted from a return to Salem’s Fall, and then some.
I was ecstatic to dive back into this Halloween themed world, but I was not prepared for just how much darker, more sinister, and downright addictive this installment would be. Was it as good as the first book? Honestly, it was better. Way better. The atmosphere felt richer, the secrets ran deeper, and I could not turn the pages fast enough.
This is the third book I’ve read by Rektok Ross, and it is easily my favorite so far. The pacing kept me completely engaged from the very beginning through the final page, and I found myself wanting more every time I had to put it down. Ross knows exactly how to build tension while keeping that perfect spooky, fall season feeling that makes Salem’s Fall such a fun place to visit.
I also want to mention the spice. I know there was some concern about including it, but in my opinion, it absolutely enhanced the story rather than taking away from it. It added to the relationships and intensity without ever distracting from the darker plot or the mystery at the heart of the book.
This series is quickly becoming one of my favorite fictional places to revisit when autumn arrives. This small town is full of secrets, and I am absolutely hoping Rektok Ross brings us back next fall for a third book. I am nowhere near ready to leave Salem’s Fall behind.

This is my second read by this author, and I loved it. I'll definitely be going back to read Salem's Fall. This story follows Jack pursuit to figure out what happened to her brother Josh. He disappeared a year ago on Halloween, and she hasn't been able to get answers anywhere.
You're immediately pulled into the mystery and surrounds of the town. Especially when talks of the Veil arrive. After arriving on the campus, she then encounters the heirs, Rowan, Van, and Silas. They all attract everyone's attention but in different ways.
Beyond the mystery of her brothers disappearance, her roommate seems to never arrive, and no one seems to bat an eye at it. This brings in the more sinister vibes of the town.
The deeper you get into the story, the more speculation arrives, and secrets begin to be uncovered, not without a little hurt, that's for sure. You'll be careful picking people stories apart and making guesses and still be shocked when it is laid bare.
I can't wait to read more from this author starting with Salem's Fall.
“You’ve always confused charm with permission.”
“Most people think politics is about leadership, but it’s really about persuasion. The trick is making people grateful for the choices you already made for them.”
“You’ve always confused convenience with entitlement."

Rektok NEVER disappoints with her spooky Halloween reads, and this one was SO GOOD!! If you’re looking for the perfect fall/Halloween read, add this one to your TBR immediately!
Welcome to Salem Falls… a creepy little town full of unexplained disappearances, secrets, and WAY more going on than meets the eye.
FMC Jack moves to Salem Falls to attend college and track down her brother, who mysteriously disappeared on Halloween night the year before at the same college. But what she finds along the way is so much more than she ever expected! The twists and turns kept me guessing, and I was completely invested in uncovering the truth right alongside Jack.
This book has EVERYTHING—trials, friendship, death, secrets, a found family, and answers about Jack’s family past that she’s been searching for.
BUT CAN WE TALK ABOUT SILAS AND ROWEN?! 🔥
Because SILAS?! He had me hooked from the very beginning. Y’all know I love me a BAD BOY, and he absolutely delivered!
And the spice?! 🥵🔥🔥🔥 LET’S JUST SAY… Rektok knows what she’s doing!
If you love spooky small towns, mystery, suspense, found family, bad boys, twists, romance, and a little SPICE, you NEED this one on your Halloween TBR!
Grab your blanket, light the spooky candles, and get ready for Salem’s Rise 🖤

I am so happy to be back in Salem's Fall! If you're looking for something similar to R.L. Stine's Fear Street or maybe The Secret Circle series by L.J. Smith, but grown up, you need this book! It has romance, mystery, and occult vibes, perfect for fall or Summerween.
Just in time for another spooky season, we get to revisit Salem's Fall with a new mystery and new characters (although some familiar faces do make an appearance). I loved Jack's character; she went to SFU to solve her brother's disappearance and wouldn't let anyone or anything get in the way of the answers she needed. Silas was the mysterious big man on campus who you weren't really sure about throughout the book and made you second-guess yourself throughout. I also questioned Wren and Rowan too, wondering if they truly were good friends or part of the sinister plot that Jack wasn't aware of.
I flew through this book, and when I got to the end, I wanted more. Not because it was an unsatisfying ending, but because I wasn't ready to leave this spooky town that has magic and cults and so much lore you want to find out all of it right now! I hope there are more stories to come in Salem's Fall in the future.
Thank you to Rektok Ross for an advance reader copy of this book!

I just finished Salems Rise and WOW! This was so fun! Let me start by saying this book has the perfect fall Halloween vibes, and even adding Christmas vibes into it LOVED IT!
I loved the yearning and angst Silas had for Jack and just all the emotions they went through. The trials were so fun I couldn’t get enough of them and wish there were more! I flew through the second half of the book in an evening!
The cameo of Damien and James YESSSSSSSS if you haven’t read Salems Fall it’s a must.
The dark academia setting the enemies to lovers, the plot everything was meticulous! I hope there is more to the Salems Fall universe and I NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THE DAMN CAT!!! 🐈⬛

Jaqueline Mercer goes to a university in Salem’s Falls with the mission of finding her brother who disappeared here last year. She soon realizes that the university is not what is seems with a secret elite society.
She meets Silas Blackhollow who is charming and arrogant and she suspects he knows more than what he is telling her.
She ends up in a series of deadly trials to help her find answers to her brothers disappearance.
While this is technically a series I did not read the first one and had no problems following along. I will be going back to read it though.
What to expect:
Enemies to lovers
Dark gothic academia
Secret society
Deadly games
Thank you to NetGalley, Rektok Ross, and the publisher to the ARC.

1.3⭐️ Well… 🤣 What am I even supposed to say about this one? I started reading it mainly for the autumn vibes, enemies-to-lovers and gothic academy, but… yeah. Sadly, I didn’t really like the story.
I did enjoy it quite a bit at the beginning, but I really didn’t like how the enemies-to-lovers was done. They barely exchanged a few words and then suddenly they were basically into each other.
Jack wasn’t really my kind of FMC either. She was VERY stubborn, and at some point I honestly started thinking she had to be stupid based on some of the decisions she kept making. 💀 She frustrated me so much sometimes.
Silas… also not really my favorite. He was constantly lying.
And that ending? SO rushed. 💔
Unfortunately, I didn’t like this one very much.

This story was so fucking good, when I say I was hooked, I mean I was HOOKED
I love a secret society and I love a game of survival and what's not to love when it's both in one? Plus Jack? Love her. I love her so so much, she takes no shit, she's my kinda girl.
And the black cat that mysteriously shows up? He's so fucking adorable too 😭😭
Thoroughly recommend reading, this was an incredibly well written book, the plot is exceptional, the characters are so well written and the development throughout the book is 🤌🏼
A big thank you to Rektok Ross for providing an arc copy! This review is mine and has no been influenced in any way.

Rektok, you did it again! 🖤 I absolutely loved Salem’s Fall, so when I saw there was going to be a second book AND Rektok was looking for ARC readers, I jumped at the chance!
Salem’s Rise had me feeling ALL the emotions. There was such a good mix of love, hatred, heartbreak, and self-growth, and I loved seeing how everything came together. And that ending?! Absolutely beautiful. 🥹
This was the perfect spooky season read—atmospheric, emotional, and such a quick read that I flew through it. If you loved Salem’s Fall, you definitely need to pick this one up!

Wow, I loved loved this book.
A girl named Jack transfers to Salem’s Fall, a year after her brother Josh goes missing. What starts off as trying to find answers into her brother’s disappearance quickly turns into her realizing she has not off more than she can chew. And that Salem’s Fall is not at all what is seems.
Salem’s Rise in my opinion was so much better than Salem’s Fall. I left Salem’s Fall with so many questions that were answered in Salem’s Rise (even though they can be read seperately).
It was such a great start to spooky season and I’m so sad to be leaving the town of Salem’s Fall once again.

ARC REVIEW:
First off a massive thank you to Rektok Ross and the publisher for allowing me to read this story early.
I LOVE this author, this entire series and hands down this book. Salems Fall was one of my favorite fall reads last year and getting to return to that world was amazing. Tying bits of Damien, James and Lucien into this new story really did it for me (although I would love to know more about the mysterious aunt who is married to Lucien. I have an idea who it could be ;) ) I absolutely love Silas! A dark, brooding bad boy but of course always taking care of and looking out for the strong female lead. Jack is a complete badass and I see so much of James’ character from Salem falls in her.
I couldn’t put this book down. Similar to the first book I flew through it. 10/10 and an easy recommendation for anyone looking for a spooky fall/halloween thriller.

This book is absolutely addictive. The deadly games, secret society, twists, and enemies-to-lovers tension kept me hooked from beginning to end. The gothic atmosphere is incredible, but this is way more than a seasonal read—it’s the kind of romantic thriller I’d recommend any time of year.

Salem’s Rise
By: Rektok Ross
Pub Date: September 29, 2026
The setting is a small town in New England. Salem’s Fall which has many traditions, although not the tradition kind we normally associate with New England. There is no mention of cider, fall leaves, lobster and all that goes with that.
The university in this town is full of rituals involving a secret society, powerful families, and the VEIL. What is the VEIL, you will have to read to find out more. When Jaqueline’s brother vanishes, she enrolls to find out what happened. It’s a powerful game and she must have her wits about her to survive. She might find an ally with Silas Blackhollow, but can she trust him completely?
This one is perfect for the season. Love being part of the authors street team. Thank you for the early ARC.

The perfect read for this spooky season.
The story follows Jacqueline 'Jack' Mercer. She decides to transfer to Salem's Fall University to find out what happened to her older brother. Who attended said University and went missing on Halloween night one year ago. She is then forced to participate on deadly trials that she needs to conquer in order to not only discover her brother's demise but to survive. And the only one who can help her is also her biggest enemy... an enemy she cannot stay away from and can't stop thinking about.
The pacing was very nice, quick, to the point, and I loved the ambience description. The fall and winter vibes really made me feel like I was there with them, celebrating the holidays. The description of each setting made me feel as if I was part of a spooky film. Like Haunted Mansion or Wednesday. It made me want to get up and get a pumpkin Latte.
The plot itself was very fun in my opinion, it has the thriller, the romance, the horror, the suspense. The romance on the MCs I do wish they interacted more on the first half of the book. I just KNOW the MMC (Silas) was YEARNING for Jack. Their interactions were always so intense in terms of 'are they making up? Will they hate each other again?' I love when chemistry can go one way or another.
The characters were captivating. Van was a personal favorite for me. An antagonist not afraid to be ruthless, a valid motive and interesting backstory. The main character, her character development amazed me. She was able to truly let go of certain struggles and was not afraid to get into action when needed.
The trials were not what I fully expected but in a good way. It was simple but in a way that it made it unpredictable. I think it was interesting how everyone had their own reactions and opinions on the trials. Some wanted to win, others to survive.
The ending brought a smile to my face, and it left me wanting more. Overall, a very cozy and interesting read that is PERFECT for fall. I will 100% check out the rest of the series and reread this book next year for spooky season. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. Rektok Ross

Salem’s Rise is a completely standalone sequel to Salem’s Fall, so you can definitely read it without having read the first book. That said, I would still recommend reading Salem’s Fall beforehand. It isn’t necessary, but I think it adds something to the experience and makes the world of Salem’s Rise even more interesting.
I really enjoyed the gothic atmosphere of this book. Give me a mysterious university, dark secrets, strange characters, and a good dose of dark academia, and I'm interested. 🖤 There is something wonderfully cozy about reading a slightly creepy gothic story when the weather outside is getting colder, and Salem’s Rise absolutely delivered that autumn/Halloween feeling.
The story was intriguing, mysterious, and atmospheric, and I liked the feeling that there was always something lurking beneath the surface. The characters and their secrets kept me curious, and the whole book had that slightly unsettling quality that made it very easy to keep reading.
However…
And here comes the part where being 50 apparently matters. 😂
I found myself thinking that the book felt a little… young for me at times. It definitely leans into the YA side of things, and while that isn't necessarily a bad thing, I think I was craving a little more maturity and depth from the characters and relationships.
And maybe… just maybe… a little more spice. 👀🌶️
Because I'm 50. I've earned it. 😂
But despite that, I genuinely enjoyed the book. It was a fun, spooky, atmospheric read with exactly the kind of gothic dark academia vibes I was in the mood for. It felt like a perfect autumn/Halloween book: mysterious enough to keep me guessing, creepy enough to give me the right atmosphere, but still a cozy and easy read.
So yes, I recommend this one — even to fellow readers who, like me, are slightly past the usual YA target audience. Just be prepared for a younger feel, and don't come looking for a ton of spice. 😉
If you love gothic dark academia, mysterious characters, secret societies, eerie universities, and autumnal spooky vibes, Salem’s Rise is definitely worth picking up.
A fun, atmospheric, mysterious autumn read — and apparently proof that being 50 means I now require more spice in my gothic academia. 😂🖤
