Housemates #1

Helping Hand

Rate this book
Jez Fielding and James MacKenzie—Big Mac to his mates—are in their second year at uni. After partying too hard last year, they make a pact to rein themselves in. While their housemates are out drinking every weekend, Jez and Mac stay in to save cash and focus on their studies.

When Jez suggests watching some porn together, he isn’t expecting Mac to agree to it. One thing leads to another, and soon their arrangement becomes hands-on rather than hands-off. But falling for your 'straight' friend can only end badly, unless there’s a chance he might feel the same.

This book is a complete story and can be read as a standalone.

Ever wonder what closet case gay college boys dream of while sitting in their repressed ivory towers, eating Top Ramen?

Shit exactly like THIS...

And THIS...

(Trust, I speak from experience.)

Many times, the object of desire is a roommate, a housemate, a frat buddy, a guy from the gym or one of their classes.

But what do they usually have in common? Other than, of course, a pretty face and a kickass body?

You guessed it. They're straight.

And that's precisely where where Jay Northcote's latest book, Helping Hand, takes us.

Possibly-bisexual Jez and his straight housemate Mac royally fucked up their finances and grades by partying too hard the previous year, so they made a pact to stay home and avoid partying this year.

And they do. Which is all fine and good, except college boys get bored and you know what they say about idle hands...

But hands aren't idle for very long (thank God,) as Jez proposes that they spend a bit of quality time together.

Watching porn. (Hell yeah, people. Hell yeah!)

So yeah, Jez and Big Mac (aptly nicknamed because his 'shoulders' are so large) are both like...

So out comes the...

Which eventually leads to some...

And for some odd reason, straight Mac gets all jealous one night and corners Jez for some...

Then Jez Google's "how to have anal sex" and he eventually offers Mac his...

Which is just ALL KINDS of fucking hot.

And since Mac's both hot and completely adorable, for Jez, their 'quality time' together starts to turn into...

But Mac's still all sayin'...

But wait. Just how straight is he really? Did Mac just get all...

Yep, there's hope in Boy's Town after all, folks!

I loved this story. It was as fun, feel-good and entertaining as it was dirty and steamy.

So 4.5 *just-how-str8-is-str8-anyway* stars for the most entertaining gay for you story that I've read in a very long time.

Way to deliver the goods (and the money shot,) Jay!

YAAASSSSS.

No matter how many times my straight guy friends deny it, this is ALWAYS what my brain will think of when I think of guys living together in college.

*cue bow-chicka-wow-wow music*

A few beers and you get a little handsy. What? It could happen! At least, in my GFY fantasies, it does...

Jay Northcote delivered and he delivered BIG TIME with this little number. Lots and lots of touching, slowwwly leading up to more... ugmph, does this author understand what gets me going or what?!

Jez and Mac were just DELICIOUS together. They were slow, hesitant at first (they make side-by-side masterbation excruciatingly hot), but as they got going it was just beautiful to see them get into it more and more. And as the physical stuff increased in intensity, so did the emotions. This book was sweet, pretty low angst, and gave me some really good feels.

But the sex... ohhh the sex. Every little baby step towards more intimacy was like freakin' candy-coated perfection! I loved how the author really dragged it out.

This one is a goodie, and if you are into hot, British college guys getting it on (WHO ISN'T???) then you are in for a REAL treat.

(Hint: the treat is a naked man. Or multiple naked men. I'm going to stop now. Just read it so I can stop my hyper-sexualized babbling.)

Good god, is there anything headier than two college boys getting each other off?

Jez (whose third-person POV we get in this story) and Mac (aka, Big Mac, cause he's got really big, um ... shoulders *ahem*) are roommates and casual friends. One night they’re bored and watch some porn together.

Ay, there’s the rub.

What begins as side-by-side wanking turns into something much sexier, and much more fulfilling. But Mac insists he’s not gay and is uncomfortable with the idea of anyone knowing what he and Jez are UP to in secret (pun intended).

This is a seriously sizzling GFY story!

Jez is bi, although he’s just recently realized it, but Mac has never desired a man before. Regardless, Mac can’t get enough of Jez, and the feeling’s mutual.

I loved the experimentation aspect of this story. Jez isn’t new to hand jobs and blow jobs, but Mac is new to everything gay. One night Jez googles “how to have anal sex” on his laptop. How cute (and sexy) is that?

And when these two butt-sex virgins finally go at it, it’s tender and tentative and very real.

Also hot as fuck. Musn't forget that.

Jez and Mac’s roommates are great secondary characters, and I would love to read Josh’s story. The one female roommate is named Dani, which made me grin really hard.

Recommended for a scorchy read; feels included; NSFW (you've been warned).

Recently I find GFY stories a bit annoying: lots of freaking out, and even more whining. No, thanks.
But Helping Hand is perfect to my taste in many ways. It is how a GFY story should be written!

❤ The romance: from an easy, comfortable but not too deep friendship to falling for each other, but without hasty love confessions, giving a promising start for their relationship. No unnecessary drama, only fun!

❤ Plot, pace, and timing: perfectly-timed, well-structured, though totally predictable plot - but it is easily forgivable because these two are just too adorable!

❤ Great chemistry: intimate and goose-bumping moments, blazing hot sex, without glamour.

❤ Romance development – slow progress, slow exploration of feelings and of each other.

❤ Just the right amount of freaking out, uncertainty, and misunderstanding.

❤ Humor and a perfect dosage of fluff.

I loved Helping Hand so much that I read it twice in a row (and on the excuse of writing a review, for the third time). Highly recommended! Highly recommended!

Jez was almost dozing when Mac said quietly, "Jez... I think I'm in love with you."
Jez's heart surged, but he kept his tone light. "You think? How about you get back to me when you're sure."
"Fuck off," Mac huffed. "I've never felt like this before, so it's confusing, okay? But yeah, I'm pretty sure."

i genuinely didn't expect to love this as much as i did, based on the blurb alone. i was hoping to like it, yes, but love? nope, didn't expect to... but i really did love it. 🥺

it reminded me a little bit of Want Me by Neve Wilder where, although the sexual aspect of their relationship played a huge role in the story, both mcs and their dynamic were enough for me to enjoy the story bc they still had cute moments (as well as the jealousy bits 😌) that had me grinning so much. if this was longer, i could see the potential of good (emotional) development between the mcs and, bc i personally prefer emotional connection > physical, you can see why i was surprised i even loved this at all but i guess if it works, it works. 🤷🏼‍♀️

also, it's a bonus that the sexual moments were hot so i can't complain much. 🤪

OMG...this is a little gem if you're a fan of sexy man on man loving....
There's not much that turns me on more in erotic books than 2 men getting down and dirty and this one certainly hit the spot *winks*

Jez and Mac are at University sharing a house with other students.Mac is straight,Jez is a bit unsure....he likes girls but has had a few 'experiences' in the past with boys.

What starts of as some hand action one night watching porn eventually develops into something more as they explore their sexual feelings for each other.
What made this stand out,was that it wasn't romanticized straight away...there was awkwardness and fumbling as they both explored their desires.

This is a short story...only about 90 pages and if you've got time could be read in a couple of hours..but it actually read as a longer book to me because it was so well written.
To all my friends here if you're into M/M action this is a must read.I've got a group of friends at home who get together whenever we can and have a wine and smut night ( don't judge me!!) and I've definitely converted some of them already into M/ M loving and I can't wait to recommend this one!!

"Let them think what they like.Gay,bi,gay for each other,I don't care.Fuck labels.I'm into you and you're into me,and that's what matters."

4.5 stars!

I don't usually include sexy gifs in my reviews. But this book deserves a few.

So here:

And this
description

Seriously, this book is hella hot. Like "I had to put it down for a second and take a breather" kind of hot. And the best part? It was real sex. These boys don't go from friends to porn-star-lovers in a heartbeat. They're awkward and hesitant, and their discovery of each other is a slow step-by-step process. It was as sweet as it was hot.

I also have to give Jay Northcote kudos for being able to portray Mac and Jez as actual friends in such a short story. I've found that usually when it's a short friends-to-lovers tale, the friendship gets buried under the smut. But that's not the case in 'Helping Hand'. We see how close the two are before they start fooling around, and how their friendship continues to grow even as they manoeuvre their new-found closet relationship.

My only complaint would be that I felt that Mac still had a lot more to tell. Of the two, I thought Mac was the more vulnerable and the most in need of a hug. I'd love a sequel from his POV to see where their story goes next!

Overall, a great college friends-to-lover story. Full of dirty sex, sweet moments, and a bit of feels to top it off. I'd recommend this for all MM readers.

It was meh, not really good for me. The second half was better than the first but still, I didn’t enjoy it as much as I expected. Told in single POV, 3rd person. It’s the first installment in the "Housemates" series and it can be read as a stand-alone. It’s a quick read and angst-free. Hope you enjoy it more than me!

This was such a yummy read, I truly enjoyed reading about how these two sweet but sexy young men got together. Jez and Mac were SO FUCKING HOT, they tipped my heat meter way over the edge. Mac surprised me on a few occasions with his reactions in a very good way. As for Jez, I was just so happy things worked out for him.

There is no better cure for a book-hangover or an unsatisfying read *for whatever reason*, than good, hot smut. Mission accomplished! 😏

To be fair, there was also a bit of sweet romance with some genuinely tender moments, and I really liked both Jez and Mac. The story wasn't exactly anything new but it was entertaining, fun and did I mention hot?

My review, with self-explanatory gifalicous visual aids.

Jez and Mac drank away their freshman year of college. Now Jez is in debt up to his eyeballs and Mac almost flunked out of school. No more partying and drinking for them. They shall stay in and be good boys.

But sometimes while hanging out with your friend and watching a movie, you get turned on by a sex scene. And naturally the accompanying hard on is uncomfortable. You'd like to relieve the pressure. Maybe invite your friend to do the same, since he seems to be in the same predicament.

This is perfectly normal. Just helping a friend out. It's no big deal. And it's nice to share experiences with your friends. The fact that you're turned on by it...it's normal...simple curiosity and hormones.

But now you can't stop thinking about it. And you find yourself looking forward to doing it again. And you do. Regularly. Eagerly. But now you find that you're not really needing the porn. It's more there as an excuse. And wouldn't it be fun to "help" each other get off. What's a handjob? A blowjob? It's not sex. It's fun. Experimenting. No big deal.

Oh, but feelings are getting involved. You can't get the other person out of your mind. Wait, what...jealousy doesn't belong here! This is no big deal! So what if you're looking forward to your evenings alone together? So what if you've fallen asleep in each other's arms? Cuddled after orgasms? Shared passionate kisses?

But still, you want to do more...experiment more....try for more. And you can't help it, feelings are getting deeper. It's getting hard not to touch in public. Encounters aren't shunned to night's home alone and under the cloak of darkness. Any moment together will suffice. Just a kiss, a touch...something.

You've shared it all. You love every moment spent together. This feels right. You want it all. You want a relationship. You want them to hold your hand. You want to kiss them in front of everyone. You want to sleep with them at night. Hold them until the sun comes up. Make love until you can't move. Well, huh...would you look at that??

I absolutely loved this quick, sweet, a little angsty and a lot steamy read! Jez and Mac were adorable! Their progression, although on the quicker side, was very engaging and for the most part believable. A thoroughly enjoyable read!

Jay Northcote remains my go-to when I'm looking for a quick, sweet and steamy read with endearing characters and an engaging and entertaining plot! I'll one-click his books any time...

I'm not sure why I liked this so much...

Maybe because Jez & Mac were so hot.
Maybe I liked reading two supposedly straight friends getting it on together. Like really getting it on together.
Maybe I liked Jez's discovery of his sexuality.
Maybe I liked how unapologetic Jez is.
Maybe I liked reading friends falling for one another.

So maybe, I can RECOMMEND this to you guys. So hard. Because maybe...no, really, you'll like it.

4.5 STARS!

Darling, hold my hand
Oh, won't you hold my hand?
'Cause I don't wanna walk on my own anymore
Won't you understand? 'Cause I don't wanna walk alone
I'm ready for this, there's no denying
I'm ready for this, you stop me falling
I'm ready for this, I need you all in
I'm ready for this, so darling, hold my hand

What can I possibly say about this book that hasn't already been said?

So many reviewers have said everything so well and so much better than I can.

So what do I do? Try to match the hot gifs?

 photo 444372_zpsk30trrxe.gif

Try to say something others haven't?

Did anyone mention how apropos the title is? Because apropos title is apropos.

Jez and Mac lend helping hands literally and metaphorically. They are roommates who have made a pact to focus on their education this semester whilst their other roommates continue to party like it's 1999 and give them both 16 different kinds of shit for being old ladies.

Little do they know their ain't no knitting happening in that house when the cats are away.

 photo 492021_zpsuycu4ilx.gif

It is hot. It's not the hotness that spoke to me, though; it was the authenticity and the lack of labels.

I don't like labels. Gay, straight, bi, pan, Chinese, Black, White, rich, poor, smart, disabled... who cares? People are people not check marks on a demographic worksheet and all the stereotypes associated with those labels. Thankfully, Jez and Mac come to the conclusion that they don't really care what others want to label them. They're into each other. The end. I respect that.

The way they explore their sexuality gets more high marks for Northcote. They're awkward and fumbling often. They don't jump into buttesex or even oral for that matter. Hell, it takes an eternity to get to the kissing bits!

 photo 14101379_zpshyu9nmtd.gif

It's all told through Jez but it's painfully obvious that Mac struggles with his feelings. I think maybe if we had been privy to his thoughts I would've felt more of a connection between them. As it stands, I think this is a promising beginning to their relationship that I wouldn't mind reading more of, if that were in the works.

Jez and Mac are straight college roommates. Instead of going out every weekend to drink with their housemates, they decide stay in to save cash and focus on their studies.

One night, Jez suggests Mac to watch some porn together. And, surprisingly, Mac agrees. However, it doesn't only become a one-time thing and with time they get more of a hands-on experience.

Their friends with benefit relationship gradually turns into something deeper and they have to deal with their complicated feelings.

It's a sizzling and delicious story with some feels. Highly recommended!

Two college guys helping each other get off, yes please! I went into this book with very high expectations, but unfortunately they weren't met. I did enjoy the story and the characters were okay, but the hotness that I was looking forward to just wasn't there. Sure there were plenty of moments with Mac and Jez together, but they became repetitive after the first few times. It was like the author was telling us what happened, rather than show us it happening and it felt like it was the same thing over and over again that was being described.

Overall, I liked that story and will most likely continue on with the series. I did wish it was a little hotter but by the end I was happy with what we got.

What a little gem! Uncomplicated, addictive and freaking hot.

I am a fan of animated movies but even if I wasn’t I would have to get over it, because my kids. You must be thinking where is this weirdo going with it? Well, Shrek. It came to my mind several times whilst reading this.

That masochist thrill of thinking that something major is about to happen at any time kept me on edge and holding my breath for almost forever! I felt like Donkey

And oh boy, I loved that!

Everything started when these two very horny friends were left behind by they mates on a Friday night because they need to study. Homework’s out of the way, Jez and Mac decided to watch some porn together. Look at that smile!

The two “we are not gays” boys moved to the bedroom and picked a video of a girl getting some. The experience was very *ahem* successful and Jez and Mac decided that they would do it again.

So again they did and at some point, in this weekly basis jerking off entertainment, they started to be aware of each other and couldn’t resist sneaking the occasion look sideways lusting after each other tools.

The porn movie? *snort* forget it! Because the boys just did. Watching each other getting off was much more fascinating.

Soon, both guys stopped pretending they were watching the videos. Are we there yet? Nope! They were just watching each other get off and they kept that way for a while.

At the next jerking off meeting… Are we there yet? Not just yet. At the next jerking off meeting, helping hands had been introduced. Oh my... Bless the author’s heart! It was so freaking hot each time these boys got together!

Are we there yet? No!!! Not quite, but the guys were getting bold. The next meeting came and we had in action mouth and tongue, *read lots of sucking, please*

AND kisses, if I am not mistaken.

Are we there yet? No, there are the fingers meeting still.

Are we there now? Yep! Finally we get there.

Phew! Such a dreamy and blissful torture!

This was seriously hot!

Highly recommended as a quick, light and hot read.

This easily could have been a 5 star book if there was another 300-400 pages of Jez and Mac.....but noooooo the stingy author had to be greedy with her magical words. ;D

There's not much I can say about this book that hasn't already been said dozens of times. It's sweet, it's romantic (that ending *sigh*) and it's smokin hot.

I think this is one of those books that would appeal to almost anyone so if you haven't already, go get yourself a copy. Highly Recommended!

Let me ask you this…
If one hand is nice, wouldn’t two hands be twice as nice?

Silly question, right? Two hands are always better than one!
The title fits to an O….err wait, that’s suppose to be T.
The blurb nails it. Nails it soo hard. *focus Sheri focus*

Do you ever get a song in your head when you are reading? I hear music in-between my ears all the time. Can you guess what was on repeat while reading this?

“We be strokin….I stroke it to the east, I stroke it to the west…”

So here’s the thing, this is definitely a smexy smuttastic pleasurefest with lots of wanking going on. But! It’s Jay Northcote, so it’s sugary sweet, smexy smuttastic pleasurefest with lots of wanking going on. For every *fans self* it’s getting hot in here moment she balances it with a *squeee* aren’t they the cutest!? It’s not PWP because it has an amazing plot. The emotions are not glazed over with hormones. The boys are not shallow and share some profound revelations. All in all, it’s a damn good time. And…it’s smokin’ HOT.

First year of college (or uni) is extremely liberating. This freedom does come with a price, mainly in the form of responsibility. Some handle the juggling act of flying and keeping your feet on the ground. Jez and Mac did not. Consequently they are both on a short leash their second year. However they find that it’s not quite as bad as they thought when they’ve got each other. Actually, it’s incredible when it’s just the two of them.

A bit tipsy and a lot brave, Jez suggests a mutual wank late one night. Once this door was opened it was impossible to shut it. One thing leads to another and soon it’s not the release they are chasing. Jez has fooled around with guys before and he’s eager to explore all of the feelings Mac stirs in him, but this is frightening territory for Mac.

Do labels really matter? Or is it simply what makes your heart happy? If you’ve always wanted to be a fly on the wall in a house full of young hotties, here’s your chance. I’d tell you to have fun, but that’s a given.

I liked this story but I didn't love it like everybody else did.

It had a lot of

and plenty

but not enough

It was more like two guys exploring their sexuality and the attraction between them, learning each other's body and eventually developing feelings for each other. I particularly liked the realism with which the sex scenes were described.

Overall, a nice, easy and sexy story.

Not sure how I feel about this book. I mean, it wasn't all that bad, but it wasn't good either. No where near. The story was written in a way that felt like you were on the outside looking in. You never got real personal with the characters, their relationship, nor did you really feel a connection. Well, I didn't, that is. It was just a story that you'll read, then soon forget. It makes the time go when you need something easy and straight forward with little depth. The book centers around Jeremy ‘Jez’ Fielding (19? 20?) and James ‘Big Mac’ ‘Mac’ MacKenzie (19? 20?) who are friends (but from my point of view, not exactly best friends, just friends who live together with other people) and makes a deal to focus on school and saving money from going out. Watching porn comes up, and one thing leads to another and the rest is history...
“How about… we tell her I was struggling with a particularly hard assignment one night, and you gave me a helping hand, and then one thing led to another.”
“Technically, I think the first time, I gave you a helping mouth.”

Quick basic facts:

Unexpectedly good, and very steamy, relatively short book

I do love a bi-awakening/gfy plot, especially when it’s as well done as it is here: Jez and Mac are housemates, and they’re spending a lot of weekends alone at home - Jez because he doesn’t have the money to go out, and Mac because he needs to study.

Ever so slowly, they start to experiment - and as these things go, they can’t keep it under wraps forever, and they eventually fall in love.

Considering it’s a short book (only 122 pages), the character development was well done. Ofc you don’t have a lot of plot - it’s mostly about sex. And there’s not much room for drama, either - people are supportive once they find out about them, and both Jez and Mac don’t dwell a lot about their feelings.

It’s short, it’s fun and it’s hot - a perfect quickie as a book.

Loved it. These two guys are sexy, sweet, adorable, and so fucking hot when they get their smexy on.
I usually don't go for shorty's like this but when I see them blowing up with high ratings I have to give in and read them. So glad I did.
I loved Mac and Jez together. They were adorable together. There was a sweetness that made me want more of their story.
I appreciated the low amount of angst the book had considering it wasn't very long. Sometimes the angst can be overwhelming in a short story and you don't get much time with guys actually being together. So happy it was avoided here.
Would love to read more about these character's. *Hint to author* ;]

Jay Northcote hits a great balance between smutty and sweet with this novella. After spending their first year at uni partying, Mac is on the verge of being kicked out of school and Jez is flat broke and in debt to his parents. As their other four housemates are out partying, they are stuck at home drinking cheap beer and watching the television. Staying home means no hooking up with girls at the bar, and since Jez did some messing around with other boys when he went to an all boy school, why not give it a shot with Mac. Mac reluctantly agrees to getting himself off while watching porn with Jez doing the same next to him. Soon they have a regular Friday night “date”, but that doesn’t make them gay, right? Jez is willing to keep pushing for just a bit more, but when his feelings start to go past more than just lending each other a helping hand, he starts wondering whether this was really such a great idea.

Told strictly from Jez’s point of view, the story has a lot of gay sexploration, a little bit of humor and just enough emotion to keep me reading straight through. A huge plus for me was that boys’ learning about the possibilities of gay sex were a bit tentative and seemingly realistic, which made things even hotter. They weren’t having porn star sex and Jez was more than willing to use porn and the all-powerful Google to help figure out the mechanics before diving in to the more advanced moves.

The attitude of let’s keep doing what feels good, as long as we can and sort out the inevitable mess later is precisely what I would expect of two twenty year old, horny college students. Of course, communicating with actual words is not their strong point so as Jez’s feelings for Mac start to change he begins to worry about Mac’s reactions. Jez is fine with his bi-sexuality, but by all evidence Mac is straight and Jez is concerned about the housemates finding out, and potentially labeling him as gay, but more importantly, with his feelings intensifying he doesn’t want to lose the friendship or get too attached before Mac inevitably finds a girl and ends things. Mac’s internal conflict worked really well for me, since I felt that the friendship was well established outside of the sex and I felt invested in that side of things as well.

Jez does get some help from their openly gay housemate Josh that gets him thinking about how much weight he should give what other people think in deciding what to do with his attraction to Mac.
“Labels can be restrictive. Sometimes you need to stop thinking about gender and sexuality and focus on the person. If you care about them, if you feel good when you’re with them, if you’re hot for them … then what does any of the rest of it matter?”

I would have loved to get just a bit of Mac’s thoughts at the beginning, but other than that, this story hit all the right buttons for me. If the thought of two horny college guys who may not be as straight as they thought, discovering the joys of gay sex by having lots of gay sex, and dealing with their increasing emotional entanglement in a realistic manner sounds good to you, run out and grab this one.
