Except for the one that got away.
Sometimes you have to start over to find your happily ever after. No cliffhanger!
A wine country native, I moved to San Francisco for college just shy of a decade ago to pursue a lifelong interest in film. As I settled into the vibrant city, it quickly became apparent that, while I thought making and editing films was great fun, I lacked cinematic genius. For that reason, my career path quickly changed direction. My next goal was a strange childhood interest, conjured at the dining room table while filling out a form. For some reason, my young self wanted to be an Accountant. Thinking on it now, I wonder how I had any friends. Regardless, it was the direction I finally took.
While I could wrangle numbers with the best of 'em, and even though I wore the crown as the most outspoken, belligerent accountant in the world, my mind got as stuffy as my daily routine. It was here that I dusted off my creative hat and began writing.
It must be love if she let him call her sugar britches...
***3.5 Stars***
Look, Surviving Love wasn't bad, it was just that little bit too sugary for me. Considering the main characters were both over 30, they just came across as immature and inexperienced. Sara is getting over being dumped by her fiance for a younger version of herself. Her confidence is really low and she decides that her best course of action is to sell up, get rid of her skuz bucket ex's debt and start over. Her dream is to move to Montana, so she gets a summer job at a ranch. When she gets there she sees her best friend from childhood, Mikey. The sexy survival specialist, has made a name for himself doing a job he enjoys. When he sees Sara and realises his childhood devotion has matured to real adult feelings, he is determined to help her recover from her heartbreak and move on with him.
Sara is a watering pot. This chick cries constantly in the first half of the story. TBH, I don't understand how and why she was in love with her ex. She did everything and he did nothing in their relationship. She was so depressed after the break up and feels unlovable. When she sees Mikey she's stoked to see him but automatically puts him on the friend shelf.
Mikey is sweet...I mean really, really sweet. If he didn't have a macho man job and a previous career in macho man world, I'd think he was too sweet. He knows what he wants and spends the whole book convincing Sara to take a chance on him.
The story was a little predictable and I guessed where the author was heading almost straight away. There are a few references to God and his guidance. I'm not a huge fan of reading about God in my smutty reads. A few things drove me a little bonkers as I was reading, but I managed to go on and somewhat enjoy it.
There is a little drama, a little heat, some great friendship and a sweet story about two kids who grow up and manage to reconnect. Not my favourite read by this author, but still entertaining enough to keep my interest.
Willow Summers knows how to create a couple that you can't help but love. I am such a sucker for a good friends to lovers story, and this had a little second chance romance thrown in as well. Mikey and Sara really shined together. I liked the bit of suspense as well.
I liked this one. I enjoy all the willow summers books. This has humor, angst, second chance real deep down never ending love. Hot guy we all want to find.
This book starts with a bittersweet memory of a long lost friendship between two children Sara and Mikey. Flash forward: Sara has had a rough go of it the last 14 years. Because of terrible personal circumstances she has had to take a leap of faith by finally trying to fulfill one of her childhood dreams. She sells everything but her clothes, packs up and moves to Montana to work on a ranch, while there she reconnects with Mickey. This is where the story begins. This book gives us more flashbacks of childhood and past young adult memories that show the reader just how far down Sara has fallen emotionally. She is truly broken and fragile. Because of this state of mind Sara sometimes says and does really stupid things. She is a grown woman of the age of 30 when the current story takes place. Because of her age I was really annoyed with how she treated Mike/Mikey at times. However the big picture does come out in the end. Mike Frost (Mikey) is a man’s man now who is still in love with Sara, his childhood friend. The timing is finally right for him and he takes the opportunity now to set the record straight with Sara.
I liked this story because it is a stand-alone book with a HEA and a no cliffhanger ending. I could see some spin off books from the characters in this book. I had issues with how the two families (Sara and Mike’s) did/ didn’t get along. I was confused at how Mike’s father was so against Sara’s family but yet his wife (Mike’s mother) was obviously a dear friend with Sara’s mother. They lived across the street from each other how could they be considered so much less then him (Mike’s Dad)? This was a weird spin to me. My neighbors a crossed the street from me have the same upper middle class home as me but yet I feel superior? Sounds odd. Anyway I digress. Overall the book is a quick read with lovable, quirky characters, and an element of danger and violence as well.
I will also state I am not a fan of Romance novels but I did enjoy this story. The flashbacks in time were a nice touch to keep the reader involved emotionally with the main characters. The two main characters Sara and Mike are believable because of the flashbacks; otherwise I wouldn’t buy the doormat behavior of Sara with her ex fiancée, Phil. There are revelations that make the subservient behavior Sara exhibits understandable, forgivable, and believable.
Where to begin? I have spent the entire day reading this book. I read as I made dinner (sorry, Family, for the overcooked yet cold dinner), but had to take a break during the kids’ bath as water and e-readers don’t mix well. Now I feel a bit drunk as I try to make sense of the world I actually live in.
To be honest, the beginning didn’t thrill me, with Sara still wallowing in the sorrow of being dumped five months ago by her boyfriend of 14 years. It was five months ago. Shouldn’t she have moved on to the “wants to drive over him with her car, repeatedly” stage by now? The guy was a total loser: drug addict, gambling addict, cheater, unemployed, and general deadbeat. But then I realized that if you stuck with someone through all of that crap and then they had the nerve to dump you, it would be pretty devastating. So I kept reading…
And here I am, fourteen hours later. Mike and Sara…oh! I just love them.
Surviving Love is part traditional romance, and then takes a sharp turn into pure awesomeness. There’s fun friendships, steamy sex, a crazy survival trip into the wilderness, and of course, a happily-ever-after. I had kind of sworn off of romances, preferring the wildness of paranormal or the intrigue of mysteries, but KF Breene writes such fun books that I read anything she writes, regardless of genre. This book did not disappoint at all. Her quirkiness and silliness add an interesting and fun level to any type of story, and I can’t get enough of her books. Even the epilogue - a feature I generally scowl at - was perfect.
Another fantastic read by the amazing KF Breene. If you haven’t read any of her books, I highly, HIGHLY recommend them. In any genre.
This is where I wish half stars were available. I really want to rate it 3.5
Surviving Love is a cute story about a woman who's relationship has ended suddenly. Or did it? Maybe Sara was too busy sticking her head in the sand to see the writing on the wall. I'm going with that.
Sara was difficult for me to like as a character. While I appreciate the author not over a sexualizing the lead male (as so many do these days), I felt that Sara regressed to middle school with her reaction to seeing him out of the blue. It was a bit too goofy for me to be able to grab a hold if and run with. I will say that the snippets of Young Sara made me love her... Older Sara was harder. I did enjoy seeing her grow and move on from Phil. And, I have to say, she is probably one of the most realistic female leads I've read in a contemporary romance. She is flawed; unsure of herself, lack of job security, and the need for validation from men make her very real. And bybgolly when it got tough, she didn't wallow. Sara swallowed her doubt and worked hard.
Mike is also a lead character you don't see very often - and that is more of a shame than anything else. He is kind, loving, devoted, and actually seeks advice. He made the story for me.
There is one character that completely surprised me- Christie. I thought I would hate her and she ended up beingy favorite character.
While this book is not my favorite from the author, it's still a decent book. Though it feels a bit rushed, the plot is solid and I enjoyed the story.
I was given an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I received an ARC of this book for an honest review. I’ve been a fan of K.F Breene since I discovered the Darkness series. This was a contemporary romance and I was looking forward to this and it did not disappoint. Sara the lead female has had her heart ripped out by her fiancée, he’s left her after years of being together for a younger woman. She’s come to the Triple T Ranch to start over, giving herself some time to think and reassess her life. She discovers her childhood friend Mikey is working on the ranch and they reconnect. Mike is aware of the past hurt in Sara’s life, and although still interested in her, he takes on the advice of his friend Jake to be a friend to her first before making a move, as she needs to heal. But as another of the regulars at the ranch try to move in on Sara, Mike realises that his feelings for Sara are so much more. When circumstances throw them together for one of Mike outdoor survivalist excursions, they realize that it’s time to meld the past with the future and give each other a shot at happiness. But there is always trouble in paradise and unfortunately Sara falls victim to it. The fact that they then would find the strength to continue on is fabulous. I like the characters in this as they were both real, they had issues and the secondary characters we are introduced to are very good as well, fleshed out with their own secrets too. Loved it
I loved, loved, loved this book. I am not normally a fan of romance but this sweet and heartwarming read had me falling in love with Love all over again. Page after page, you could feel Sara's heartbreaking pain, the hope that she clings to and the love that surrounds her. Mike is an absolute gentleman and it's even better knowing he's hot, good looking and utterly dedicated to Sara. Am I gushing enough? Who wouldn't want to be on the receiving end of such devotion. I would have so much liked to kick Duke where the sun don't shine, horrible man. All the other characters are worthy of mention and I'm sure that the author can spin us a tale with some of them as the protagonists! We can probably all relate to most of the happenings in this book, which makes it so believable and heartfelt. After experiencing K.F.Breene's amazing penmanship in the Darkness series and later in the sublime Warrior Chronicles, I can safely say she is also on her way to becoming queen of contemporary romance. I was gifted this book as an ARC in return for an honest review. Thank you K.F.Breene for the trust you put in us ARC readers.
*I received a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review*
I absolutely adored this book! Mike was utterly swoon worthy! I loved how protective he was! Whether he was protecting her from scumbags, bears, or her own emotions he always came through. I liked Sara as well, although there were points in which I wanted to smack her upside the head, shake her a little and say 'look at what is right in front of you!', I still liked her all the same and I could see where she was coming from. This book is full of laughs, such as whenever Mike and Sara get together the banter between them is great, when Sara tries to catch a fish, and when she goes ninja with a stick. The secondary character were also great I adored Jake, and Christie and Greg and hope they get a book as well. Breene has a knack for blending humor with seriousness seamlessly so that your laughing out loud one minute and gasping with tears in your eyes the next. I very highly recommend this book. <3
Now, its no secret that I like my romance novels. BUT. I don't like wishy washy type rubbish. I like something that will grab my interest; something that isn't just churned out to a formula.
And I'm pleased to be able to report that this neat little story hits the mark quite nicely.
I liked Sara straightaway. She struck me as a complex, and realistic character - insecure yet with an inner strength that belies outward appearances. Despite this, she was incredibly frustrating! Of course, as the reader, you get to see both sides of the story, and Mike's side is a lot simpler. Still, the dancing around that these two do ...
This was genuinely one of those books where I just wanted to find out what happened next. The writer succeeded in drawing me into the story line and becoming invested in the outcome.
And this got the ending that the characters deserved. Thoroughly enjoyable.
I received a copy in exchange for an honest review.
They were inseparable as children and reunited as adults. His love for her is what held him together as he looked death in the face. His heart carried her with him until fate brought them together again.
She was emotionally wounded, but had her "Mikey" back in her corner. She needed to heal and come to terms with the man vs. the boy she knew and loved.
Fate may have brought them together, but a number of trials will test them.
A cold and calculating ranch hand, Duke may very well be the death of them. Will they persevere or perish? Will Duke destroy Mikey by destroying his Sara? 5 Huge stars and a hope for me to see them again in a future book, novella or secondary characters in a follow-up story featuring Christie and Greg?
Well done as I have my warm and fuzzies in my heart to start my day.
This was a excellent romance book. Was just looking for a fluff book to kill time with, had no great expectations for something with substance. Man was I wrong about this book. The characters are real people, who do some extraordinary things. While there is plenty of fluff in the story it is more than that. There is a great storyline that keeps you reading.
Sara is at the lowest point of her life, but has this overall strength that gives her the courage to leave everything behind and do something for herself. Her struggles are things that everyone can relate to on some level and to see her handle them with such strength is amazing.
Mike is the guy that everyone wants. He is a strong take no prisoners kind of man. But you get to see this overwhelming sense of love he has in him. I wish I could meet someone like this. Too bad we can't make him real.
I liked this story. There were parts that irked me but overall it was a good read. I thought the 4 days in the woods was pretty interesting. But honestly who in the heck would kiss another person after 2-3 days of no teeth brushing and after eating fish! Bleh!!!!! I really liked Christie. She and Sara had me LOL. I thought Sara and Mikey had a very strong, sweet relationship. At times Sara showed a lot of immaturity in my opinion and that bothered me. I think it was more in her reminiscing about their past. She seemed very young yet talked about being so old. Which is another thing that bothered me. She was 30 I believe. How is that old and used up?!?! Anyway, LOL, those are some of the things that irked me. But it was a good read. :)

Friend zone Have you ever had a best friend move away and years later when you reconnect it’s like you start back up right where you left off. Only it’s a bit different when your kid and then adults later. This is a wonderful love story of two kids now grown reconnecting and changing from friend to more. This is Sara’s and Mikey’s story and how after a horrible breakup for Sara and her ex-fiance she moves and goes to work at a Dudes ranch. And it just happens that her old friend Mikey is works there. Mikey has to try and get out of the friend zone Sara has put him into. And there are several twists and troubles along the way. Well written and very entertaining to read.
I loved this book! Mike is dreamy! The man we need when we're broken and don't know how to put ourselves back together. was utterly swoon worthy! He was protective, loving, and always there for Sara. While I worried about her sanity with that hotty around I understand where she was coming from and gave her time to find herself. This book is a joy to read, full of friendship, love, and laughs. The secondary character were also great, hoping to see more stories from this group of characters. K. F. Breene is a genius at blending humor and action into a book that kicks your butt. I recommend this book to those who love a good laugh with some drama in the mix.

Romance stories, unless they are paranormal romance, are typically not at the top of my favorites. But, every now and then one of my favorite authors will release a romance novel that I just can't put down like Surviving Love. K.F. Breene, as always, did a wonderful job in character & plot development and provided an interesting, entertaining, and captivating story. I could not put this book down! The story includes a strong, yet emotionally vunerable snarky female lead and a handsome strong alpha mature male. I highly recommend Sara and Mikey's story
This book took me through laughter and tears! What do you do when your life falls apart? Sell everything and start living you're dream.... Mike Frost had everything except for...... love Sara thought she had it all till that one moment it all came crashing down....
Two souls going through the motions...one searching, and one fighting off the pain. This book took me through so many emotions and I will admit I had that moment only a bookie will know........the book cry!!! So why haven't you one-clicked yet???? Did I say must read!!!!!
'His muddy brown eyes smacked into her, forcing his presence on her. It also forced out a sudden moistness between her thighs.' ................
'Sure,' she mumbled, her sex pounding.
Nope. Not for me. And this is a women who is apparently devastated because her boyfriend of ten years has just left her. Turns out the guy who makes her wet between the thighs has been accused of date-rape and STILL works for the same company.

Too many competing males, too many clichés.
Not rating at this moment.

A great story of how old love finds each other and the battle it takes to win "the one" back.
You can't help but fall in love with Mikey whose love and loyalty aren't just the only great qualities of the male lead.
And then of course Sara proves that no matter what we've been through with past loves and the pain it caused, you can overcome it and find true happiness.
Breene never lets me down. Give all her stuff a read, it's worth it!
Amazing book! I lived the dynamic of them bring friends as kids growing up to getting reacquainted with each other as adults. The secondary characters definitely helped make this book even better! Sara and Mike are amazing, but add in Christie, Greg, and all those other characters and it makes it all the better. I can't wait to read more about some of the other characters, and more about Sara and Mike also! Great read all around!!!
A lovely heart warming story, lovely characters Mike and Sara have been in love since they were children, only they didn't know it. They meet up as adults, while Sara is trying to forget a terrible relationship that resulted in her being dumped for a younger model, getting reacquainted with her childhood friend is just what is needed. great story line. I didn't want the story to end. I will most definitely be ready to read the following books in this series
While the writing style was the same, lots of humor, and the characters were human they were still the same. The girl always has security issues and the guy is amazing. I love the male characters that she writes but the female are always so flimsy. I would not recommend and I skimmed a lot of the book.
