Review: KILLING ME SOFTLY by Kathryn Biel

Feisty and feckless heroine Sadie has done fairly well for herself, despite her dysfunctional upbringing. Teaching high school American history is gratifying. Still, she grieves her father's catatonia from a stroke four years ago; and in common with many, she wants a home and a life companion. The big problem is believing that her occasional hateful speech causes deaths, and some do seem way too coincidental. But she never intended to bring it so close to home...
Delightful chick lit leavened with humour and underpinned with potential paranormality, KISSING ME SOFTLY manages to be both sweet and gently sensual.

I wasn’t sure what I expecting when I picked up this book, but I wasn’t expecting what happen in this story. Killing Me Softly is quirky and funny. The story starts a little slow but quickly adds steam and goes full speed ahead. I loved that it started with the history of Sadie. A peek into her life as one of three children and her relationship with her siblings, which sets the main story line. While I don’t think she was neglected growing up, but I do not think the last few years of her life have been nice to her. It seems like she had one of those take one step forward and get thrown two steps back lives. While she had good intentions with all that she did, it did not always work out that way.

The characters were relatable and well developed. Each character had their own story, yet they all managed to intertwine with each other making a complete book. With Sadie’s history all I wanted for her was to become happy and settled in life. I wanted her to finish her house how she wanted it done, meet the man of her dreams, and I mostly wanted her to be okay with her life and realize she did not cause death.

I loved that the setting was a small town. Even living a few towns over from where she works she still runs into people she knows regularly. She could visit her mom and dad, work in a bar that she knew everyone, and teach in a school where she could invest in the students. It was also not so good for her. When things went wrong there were no keeping secrets or hiding what was going on. Rumors flew, people talked, and fingers were pointed.

I suggest snuggling in, preferably with a glass of wine, and start reading. You will not be able to put this book down.

In Killing Me Softly, author Kathryn R. Biel weaves an intriguing romantic tale with a twist of mystery, and suspense. The readers are easily drawn into Sadie Perkins' story, she has the gift of clairvoyance which causes complications in her life when she starts to believe that her visions cause the death of people around her. She finds her life gets complicated when she is under suspicion of murder, and has the burden of trying to defend herself and clear her name. To relieve the stress, Sadie turns to a home renovation project, and along comes sexy contractor Max Schultz, who tries to win her heart. With plenty of drama and trouble following at her heels, can Sadie clear her name and open her heart to love?

Killing Me Softly is a thoroughly entertaining story that has just the right amount of intertwining romance, humor, mystery and suspense. As Sadie's story unfolded, it had enough drama, emotion, laugh out loud moments, and gritty twists and turns, that easily drew me in, kept me guessing, and wanting to know what would happen next. I have always been interested in the area of psychic phenomenon, so Sadie's gift of clairvoyance and the burden that comes with it really peaked my interest, kept me engaged, and turning the pages. I loved the backstory of Sadie's life, the rich description of the small town setting, the quirky pop culture references, the witty dialogue, and I would be remiss if I didn't mention that I really enjoyed watching how Sadie's romantic relationships played out in the end.

Kathryn has been on my radar for a long time. Almost since setting foot (Kindle?) in the crazy world of blogging and reviewing books nearly two years ago. I finally had the chance to read one of her books and expectations were exceeded.

Each of Kathryn's books is a standalone so you can read in any order. I started with Killing Me Softly for a few reasons.

K is for Kathryn and Karan. Kismet, right? Perfect one to start with!
The song. I’m aging myself here, but I remember “Killing Me Softly” by Fugees well. I was 15 when this released. Ahh, teenage memories. (While looking up the artist name, I learned that there are at least two other versions from prior to my existence. I’ve learned my one thing for the day! Yeah!!)
It was Kathryn’s next release, as in two days away, and I had grabby hands so she sent it to me in exchange for my review.

I started reading Killing Me Softly after crawling into bed. I finished it before I left for work the next morning. Yup. Read that thing from the title page to the very end. I laughed, I cried, and I cursed Kathryn for all of the feels.

Do you ever read a book and think, “This. This is exactly how I feel.” and then breathe a sigh of relief because you realize that you’re not alone, even if comparing yourself to a fictional character? Killing Me Softly had several passages like this and some still resonate.

In keeping with my “no spoilers” rule that I started on my first blog, I’ll end this by saying that this book is on my “2015 Must Read” list.

What a roller coaster ride for Sadie Perkins! That poor girl! If I were her I think I would have had a nervous breakdown by the middle of the book!
This book sucked me in right from the get go!
Let me say I never used to believe in mediums, but then I started watching Long Island Medium and I was hooked!
As for Sadie, she has dreams of what is to come and then it happens. The downside of this ability is the fact that Sadie thinks she is causing these people's death's and unfortunate mishaps! Talk about stress for the poor girl!
Her luck seems to be turning around, she's going on a weekend getaway with her boyfriend Rob. Once they arrive it goes down hill...not only does he make her drive separately to meet him there (who does that?) then while there, there is an incident with a bat. Yes you read that correctly, a bat!
Not only does he freak out, he runs from the room, packs his things and tells her he's heading home. Now mind you, he knows she has been drinking and can't driver herself so he tells her that she can stay and leave tomorrow morning when she is able to drive. Did that just happen? He didn't even offer to bring her with him?
The story begins to unfold in so many crazy directions...first there is a car accident...then there is a pregnancy, then a love affair begins, an old first crush returns, followed by a disappearance...
Your mind will be going in so many directions, you won't know who to believe, who really did what and where the story is going to do next!
Sit back and enjoy this wild and crazy turn of events in Sadie's life!

In 'Killing Me Softly', Kathryn Biel's quirky, upbeat, and funny storytelling is back - this time with a bit more mystery and suspense. It's reminiscent of her second novel Hold Her Down but a little edgier and sexier. Sadie Perkins is a well drawn out character who appears to be the only 'normal' person in a hopelessly dysfunctional family (even though she's "causing" deaths left and right).

I expected this to be a hard-core-sexy-suspense-mystery-thriller, but it's more of a romantic comedy with a somewhat diabolical twist. There's abruptness in the way the mystery was "solved", but the author provided a convincing resolution. It's chock-full of laughter-inducing dialogues that really make it an absolutely enjoyable read!

When picking a book to read , there are often a few personal factors involved from whether it be the title, cover, author or in this case even the release date can be a factor. For me Killing Me Softly was decided by the fact that I had previously enjoyed one of the author's books and the second thing was that this book was actually released on my birthday earlier this year. Killing Me Softly, though it has an ominous feel about it with the title whether it be the idea of Killing someone softly or the famous song I had expected a murder mystery type book. Then with it being part of the CLP website, I figured it would have to be a little bit chicklit-ish which led this story to being more of a romantic comedy rather than a romantic suspense. The main character Sadie has premonitions of people's deaths and it gets to a worrisome point in the book where she actually believes that it's her own doing especially after a local boy dies a day after she was talking about him. Then she thinks her boyfriend Robin not Rob will propose but he turns out to be a wimp and they end up splitting, though really with a name like Robin for a guy - what did you expect . Sadie will get a few more romantic choices down the track with Max and Fitzy, though you will have to read to see which one she ends up with. Killing Me Softly had a lot of fun LOL moments as well as it's ups and downs with deaths and break-ups. If you are one of those readers, that loves going into detail about the characters and learning all about them - getting right in there with the gritty nitty bits , then you will enjoy Killing Me Softly as Kathryn is big on character description which some people love and enjoy, unfortunately though for me -I am more of a fast paced reader , so this part slowed down the story for me. Other than that, Killing Me Softly if you love romantic comedies and books where the characters have abilites - then this is the read for you.

Sadie has feelings / premonitions / insight to the future. She says random things that seem to then come true. After going to a B&B with her boyfriend of two years, thinking he is going to propose, a bat spoils it all. Sadie realises that Rob is not the one for her. And she has the feeling that he won't ever talk to her again because of it. How right she was!

Alone again, Sadie decides it is time to do things on her own and her way. She buys an old house and sets about renovating it. She also hires a contractor to help, Max. Sadie's sister Jenna keeps popping in uninvited and unannounced. She is always in competition with Sadie. Only just finishing her new bathroom, Jenna has gone and made a mess in there which Sadie cleans up. Once she kicks Jenna out, she goes missing and Sadie is hoping that her feeling won't come true this time.

It is a week from hell for Sadie. She becomes the prime suspect in her sisters disappearance and possible murder, her Dad - after suffering a stroke and spending the last four years in a nursing home - dies and two men are vying for her affection. She has another vision, but just can not be sure who is the right man her Dad is trying to show her in the dream. Who can she trust? Who is on her side?

I throughly enjoyed reading this book. Sadie's best friend Therese was someone I want to hang with. There are some really funny bits between these two. All the characters were well developed and the story line was one that had me thinking and trying to guess the ending constantly. This is the first book I have read from Kathryn R Biel, but I know it won't be the last.

I received a copy of this book for an honest review.

Killing Me Softly is the first book that I've read by author Kathryn R. Biel — it won't be the last.

Author Kathryn R. Biel writes stories of resilient women, and she delivers on that with Killing Me Softly's Sadie Perkins. I loved Sadie! And I kinda wanted to slap her up the head a few times, the same way I would with any good friend who needed a reality check. That's one of the reasons I gave this book 5 stars; because I genuinely liked Sadie and could see her as friend. For the record, I prefer my friends to be just as flawed as I am and Sadie certainly has her flaws — but she also is funny, smart and has a very good heart.

Kick your shoes off, cuddle up in a comfy spot with a mug of coffee/tea or glass of wine and enjoy Killing Me Softly. It's a quick read with a contemporary setting and just the right amount of pop culture references to make me smile. Biel's dialogue earned outright laughs and the plot had the right amount of twists to keep me turning pages.

Know what else Killing Me Softly had? It had a couple of sexy guys and I'm sure you'll love Max and Fitzy as much as I did. I'm not going to give spoilers but let's just say I was happy with Sadie's choice in her forever man and truly enjoyed the happily ever after because seriously, Sadie deserved her happy.

I highly recommend Kathryn R. Biel's book Killing Me Softly. It's fun, romantic and the perfect read after a long day.

This is not your typical romance story. It's rom-com, mystery, suspense, thriller---a little bit of everything!

Sadie seems to be the most normal person in her strange and dysfunctional family--and when you consider that she believes she can cause people to die just because of her words, that is definitely saying a lot.

There is so much going on in Sadie's life throughout this book that I don't know how she holds on to her sanity. There's a planned romantic getaway for Valentine's Day that goes VERY wrong, a tragic car accident, a pregnancy, a new love interest, the return of a crush, a mysterious disappearance, a death, etc.
Oh, and let's not forget that Sadie is renovating her new home throughout all of this.

You might think that all of that activity would make the storyline tough to follow, but it doesn't. It just has you wanting to keep reading to find out what Sadie is going to get herself into next, and how she's going to get out of all the many messes she finds herself in, time after time.

Can the perfect weekend end up worst than Sadie's romantic escape? Sadly I don't think so... firstly she and her boyfriend broke and after, she discovers that he had died in a tragic accident. But Sadie's problem has just started... ready for this rollercoaster?

This is not the book you will expect to read, is not just a love story; there's mystery, a kidnapping and a an attempt to murder!
Sadie's story is quite sad and full of surprises, not all of them good... but there are some unexpected twists, two handsome guys and a very brave woman, what more do you need?
I had a good time reading this book, the situation between Sadie and her sister is so scaring that I am really relieved to not have any brother or sister... if I ever found that any of my brothers or sisters are having and affair with my boyfriend... maybe it would not just be a thought of a dead person I would have... But Sadie take the news not so badly, and lucky for her there are two handsome guys that will make her forget her boring and cheater ex-boyfriend! :)
Have you ever thought of someone's death?

Wow, this was a good book. I’m always a fan of a little “magic” in my books, and Sadie has the special gift of clairvoyance. Her visions are always about death though, so it definitely is a hard gift to have, especially when she begins to blame herself for certain deaths that she thought she could prevent. There is plenty of touching moments in the book, especially with Sadie and her father, but the real crazy storyline is about Sadie’s sister. Wow. I can remember my heart beating like crazy while reading those scenes, especially when Sadie becomes a suspect in her disappearance. Those scenes and the way these characters were created and brought to life are so well-written. I was hanging on to every word, especially near the end, and was shocked at the conclusion/resolution. In addition to that, I loved the romance angles. I actually didn’t know who Sadie would end up with in the end, but was happy how everything came together. I highly recommend this one.

Fair warning in front, it is hard to ly this book down, so make sure you have the time.
Sadie seriously thinks she can kill with her thoughts. After several that happen you would almost agree. She is accused of killing his sister at a point, while she renovates her house and she ha to chose between two men. Will she be able to proof she isn't guilty and make the right choice?

This is a fun and quirky book, with strong characters, fun twists, humor, romance, and as I said before hard to put down I look forwards to other books from Kathryn Biel

I received this book in exchange for a fair and honest review. All opinions in this review are 100% my own.
Sadie swears off dating for good after the break up with her boyfriend. I know from experience that is easier said than done. It turns out Sadie has not one but two men wanting her attention and to date her. Which one will she choose? The man from her past or the mystery man she keeps running into?
This started out as a light hearted read. There are twists that happen that just pop up when you least expect it. That’s what makes this book a page turner that you just can’t put down!

Loved this book! Start with some mystery then add some romance and you have a great weekend read. Does Sadie allow herself to fall for Max even though she may hurt him with her secret? This was a quick story to read that keeps you guessing until the end. I don't know what I would do if I were Sadie.

~~~~~~~~~~Lillian's ★★★★ Review~~~~~~~~~~
The start of the book is bit weird but as you learn more about Sadie and her 'visions' then you realize that she isn't a complete nutter. Sadie is hoping that her boyfriend Rob asks her to marry him but it doesn't work out that way.
She loses Rob and gets a hug shock that basically destroys her self worth.
Her family is a big mess and things are just going to get worse for them all. Sadie is looking for love there are two men that make her hope that she can be happy again but she isn't sure which one is the groom in her dream.
Who can she trust as everyone seems to want something from her and she is has been hurt so badly by so many people this year.
A really funny book that had me laughing even crying at times. I thought that my family were screw ups, Sadie are much worse. A story of new beginnings and making new memories after so much sadness. I am glad that Sadie stuck with her forever love as he was meant for her.
I was lucky enough to get a copy through my reading group.
FTC: I received a free copy of this book from CLP in exchange for my honest review.
I received no other compensation for this review.
Killing Me Softly by Kathryn R Biel was a good book it just wasn’t one of my favorites. I am not sure what I didn’t like about this book because it was written well and I did like Sadie right from the start. I think one thing I didn’t like was how Sadie over analyzed the people dying and blaming herself for their deaths. I really didn’t like her boyfriend at the start of the book right from the start and if I am being honest I wasn’t sad when he got killed. He bugged me and I knew that Sadie deserved someone 100% better than him. I did feel at times like some parts of the book were drug out too long and maybe some of Sadies thoughts that she had could have been cut out or shortened. This was an okay book and I am sure if you like chick lit then you might enjoy this book and you should check it out.
❤❤❤❤❤
Kathryn R. Biel is a new to me author.
I really enjoyed this well written, easy to follow, self-discovery story... The characters are well developed, picturesque and endearing.
The world building is consistent, full of raw emotions, betrayal, anger, love, self-doubt, and believable. Chock full of mysterious twists and turns that will keep you guessing.
How would you react if you merely mentioned a person in a passing statement... then it comes to fruition? Sadie doesn't know what to think.
Great storyline. I look forward to reading more from this author.
