I wasn’t sure what to expect with this book so I went in with a completely open mind. I didn’t have any expectations so I can’t say I’m disappointed but I do feel a little lackluster.
I was mostly bored with the plot because it wasn’t original. It was a basic YA concept of a completely normal girl that ends up being super special and has an amazing destiny. I wish there had been a little more creativity.
I liked the main character well enough. I thought there was some pretty good character develop

The characters as well as the small town draw you into the story and make you never want to leave. But then there is this whole other world via portal that is dark and dangerous that needs saving.....mix in vamps, witches, fairies, warlocks, werewolves, cute football players, cheerleaders, parties, LOVE and DEATH...what more could you ask for? Well, this author gives so much more. I hope you have some tissues...lots of tissues.

This book took me an embarrassingly long time to read. I was given it ages ago and when I finally got around to reading it I felt disappointed. More than anything I found this book difficult to get invested in. I didn't really like any of the characters and found most of their choices extremely annoying. It deterred me from reading

I have to admit this book is really well written for a debut novel. I am not a paranormal reader but I really got sucked into this story since it is written so well. Character development was on cue. There were no discrepancies in the storyline from what I could tell. Wat to go J.Lynn Bailey on a well written, very entertaining book.

Penelope Jackson has had a hard life. Her earliest memories were living with her crack-addicted adopted mother - who died when she was 8. Scarred by horrible memories of that time, Penelope moved to live with her aunt JoAnne. Life for the next almost-10-years went pretty calmly. She wasn't popular in school, but she had her couple of good friends, and her loving aunt. But then everything changed. She found out that she'd been lied to her whole life. That she was a special immortal being called a ...more

WOW!! I absolutely loved this book. I enjoy reading every genre of book but this one really stuck with me. I’ve already read it twice and plan on reading it again soon!

The author does an amazing job of bringing you into the story. Penn and Kendra are such likable characters I would find myself looking for them as I would drive through my small town. I love the relationship they have with each other, they are both tell-it-like-it-is type of people and I can totally appreciate that!

I didn't quite know what to expect when I started reading this book, but I was not disappointed! The first book in this series has laid the groundwork to what is going to prove to be an in depth story that includes a little bit of everything. I cannot wait to read the next one!

Black Five by J. Lynn Bailey is a Young Adult novel set in a world filled with fantasy and magic.

The story revolves around the spunky Penelope Jackson, a seventeen year old girl who is just beginning her senior year of high school. I found her to be a likable character throughout the book and I especially loved how much she grew as a character. She doesn't hold back on her words and will speak her mind. The supporti

What a perfect series beginning full of paranormal creatures with the right amount of love, magic and utter devastation! Fast paced and the characters are really enjoyable. The author quickly pulled me in and kept me till the end and I am looking forward to the continuing story.

I loved this book! I couldn't put it down. I went on vacation to visit friends in LA, my husband had passed from a tragic accident and I needed a break. This was the BEST break. I hadn't read a book in too long. I took only this book on my week long vacation. I finished it in less than three days and we were playing tourists from Long Beach to Santa Barbara during that time....yes the book, Black Five. was that good. I highly recommend it. J. The author is actually from the same town as I am. Mason is based off of Ferndale so as I was reading those parts, I knew where I Ferndale that was. It made me really happy and I love looking at the map of Mason when I feel homesick for my little town I can’t wait to move back to when I’m out of high school. I love the magical elements mixed in as well. Amazing. My mama actually used to work with the author (when the author was a child).

I feel really conflicted about this book. There were a lot of things that I loved, but also a lot of things I didn’t like at all. I rated it at 3/5 stars, but to be honest, I'm not really sure what rating I want to give it.

First of all, it seems like no editor was involved with this at all. There were tons of errors - quotation marks missing, double quotation marks in some points,

First, let’s tackle the synopsis. It doesn’t tell you about the story, it doesn’t tell you what happened and what is the main plot. It tells something but is pretty ambiguous. Let me give it a go:

Penelope thought her life was normal, other than having a healing power and also a murder under her belt from when she was eight. After the adopted mother disaster, she lives with her aunt since eight years old. Now, sudd

Thank you to NetGalley and Poorhouse Publishing for providing me with an ARC for an honest review.

Going into this novel I didn’t have any expectations. I hadn’t read any reviews prior to obtaining a copy and I hadn’t heard anything about it in the YA blogging community. With that being said, I didn’t expect to be so thoroughly disappointed. There isn’t one thing that I really loved about this novel. Honestly I don't know how I got through this book.

The first half of the novel was so fast paced

I got a copy of this book to review through NetGalley. I was drawn to the beautiful cover and intrigued by the interesting premise. I wanted to love this book but it ended but being very inconsistent throughout. There were parts I really loved and parts I really didn't enjoy.

'Black Five' is an original young adult fantasy novel unlike anything I've read before. It took a while to get going, but once it did, it didn't slow down until the end. I had a really hard time getting into the story and connecting with the characters for the first few chapters. The writing and dialogue felt awkward and forced a lot during the beginning of the book and kind of continued throughout - only it got better as the story went on. I was just about ready to quit reading and try it again ...more

Black Five by J. Lynn Bailey takes place in small town Mason where 17 year old Penelope (Penn) Jackson's life gets very complicated, very quickly. After a gruesome murder in town, events unravel leaving Penn questioning her entire upbringing. She discovers that her best friends since childhood, Kendra and Jesse are a Witch and Sentinel (a protector) respectively, part of her security detail since birth as she is one of only two known surviving Black Bloods from the land of Nightmerianotte. I don't like writing bad reviews. Usually if I don't enjoy a book I know that straight away and I just don't finish reading it. Black Five is difficult though. It's difficult because the premise is actually really good. The ideas behind it make it everything YA fiction should be. And I love YA fiction.

Ok so what did I enjoy firstly about this book? Let's get the good stuff in there fi

I was very conflicted after reading Black Five. Partly because I didn’t really set up an expectation for it to be disappointed. There are bits and parts of what I love alongside with the one that I didn’t like at all.

The idea of this book is not very original. The story is quite basic, with young girl who found out that she has hidden magic and end up with her life changes, forever (dramatic effect here), from the normal one that she thought

Penelope a.k.a Penn, has been carrying sad memories within herself. This follows a story of a 17-year old highschool girl, is unaware of her dangerous secret. A secret that she has never been told. Hence, she has been living a lie. One day a strange news of murder spreads across the town, Nighmerianotte, and people are shocked to hear that the attack is not by some animal. With the start of the book, I was immediately transported to the world of Harry Potter, a book which is close to my teenage self. The uncanny similarity in the narration style definitely helped in creating the bond with the character. However, as I progressed through the story, the lead character started reminding me of Kristen Stewart from Twilight and that definitely unsettled me more. It has been a while since I have dealt with a teenage character and the drama and angst of a teenager definit ...more

Black Five was a satisfying YA novel that fit the genre of YA well with a promising premise and intriguing characters. The plot kept me on the edge of my seat throughout the whole novel and I had a hard time putting it down. The characters were very vibrant and relate-able. I breezed through the book and found the writing easy to read.

There were some things in this book that are similar to other YA novels today. Including a love triangle, troubled past, and parents that weren’t ‘in the picture’.
I love books that take me to other worlds and still bring me back to our own. This book does just that. We get to travel to different realms, that are connected with portals. This is like other books in the genre though. There are some things that make it like your normal, run of the mill paranormal teen book. I think that there were so many times that this book could have much more then it was. I do think that it was a good book, but it could have been so much more!

I received this from Netgalley.

I finished this novel last night and I have been trying to gather my thoughts so they make sense. My first thought after finishing it was, ``Where is next chapter. I must read book two``. One thing I really enjoyed about the series were the characters. They all had unique personalities and they grew throughout the story once you learned more about them. Penn went through a lot of changes and it`s easy to see. It made me happy that she wasn`t perfect and made choice

Right now, as I write this review, I am chuckling and shaking my head at the insanity of it all. Masochism, bipolarity and a lot of whiplash were what I took away from this. There were also mind-over-matter, mind-over-matter and mind-over-matter. Whoops! Nope, the heart rules all.

The concept of a seemingly ordinary girl but has an extraordinary destiny is not new to YA; it's been a tried-and-tested formula and has already gone through a lot of incarnations and personalities. Black Five, initiall

This had a very slow beginning but had definitely redeemed itself by the end. The characters were fantastic. It had a very original and refreshing plot that has me hooked. There were a few parts where it seemed to drag a little but overall, it was well worth the read. I find myself genuinely looking forward to the next book in the series. The romantic scenes seem a little much for a book targeted to 13 year olds and I would think it more appropriate for those a couple of years older. That being ...more

I feel really bad but I just could not get into this book. I tried three times within the space of two weeks and could not read more than a few pages each time. I've officially given up just a bit before the second chapter.
I'm sure this is a really nice book if reviews I've read are anything to go by but it isn't for me.
I wasn't fond of the use of present tense or the long diegetic words that are thrown in all near each other so I couldn't get a sense of what the words meant. There was a coupl

This is a perfect beginning to a series that has a bit of every paranormal fantasy story could hope for. Its dark setting is very Tim Burton-ish and is definitely perfect for fans who love the gothic feel to books. I love the main character as she tried to learn what she was and the way the writer laid the groundwork of the world without making it seems thrown together in a single chapter.
