Rate this book
A young man is found beaten to death, a radical reverend runs a suspect commune, the most sacred areas of a Catholic church are desecrated, a sabotaged railroad track leads to a deadly derailment, and a Jewish holocaust survivor is hung in effigy. All happen in too short a time span to say they are not related. When the sheriff of Lake County is shot in the back, ambushed, Deidre Johnson comes out of retirement to solve the crimes. Preying in Two Harbors is the fourth book of the Two Harbors mystery series written by Dennis Herschbach.

The writing is rather clunky, but the story is engaging. Herschbach weaves together several news-inspired plot lines in this woman detective mystery. I enjoyed seeing Diedre come to a loss for leads, only to become victim herself. The emergency response felt realistic to me. I also liked reading about local haunts in Two Harbors. As a result, I’ll have to get breakfast at Judy’s Cafe and pick up a pizza at Do North Pizzeria soon!

Much better than the previous three. Another good story and sufficient writing, but much better paced, and more action. The main character has been nicely developed but her surrounding cast isn’t very memorable.

Dennis Herschbach does an amazing job of bringing the North Shore to life. I absolutely love reading his books. Deidre is brought back into the fold after the sheriff of Two Harbors is shot and a string of other attacks mysteriously happen along the North Shore. Anxious to come out of retirement and have something to fulfill her days, Deidre sets out the find the thread that ties these crimes together. Now a wife and mother she juggles her time only to be caught in the middle of radical group set out to make their mark in multiple states. Gripping and suspenseful with a great cast of characters. I love these books. I love opening one and taking a quick trip to the North Shore. Dennis truly brings these books to life with his words.
