Wings in the Night #17

Vendetta di sangue

Rate this book

I live in the teeny, tiny town of Taylor, NY, (Alliteration Alert!) though my mailing address is Cincinnatus, my telephone exchange is Truxton and I pay taxes and vote in Cuyler. All of these are at least in the same rural county in the southern hills of New York State; Cortland County. There are more cattle than people here. The nearest “big” cities are Syracuse and Binghamton and they are an hour away, in different directions, and not really all that big by most standards, though they both seem humongous to me. I look out my window to see rolling, green, thickly forested hills, wildflower laden meadows and wide open blue, blue skies. My road is barely paved. The nearest neighboring place is a 700 acre dairy farm.

My house is a big, century old farmhouse. I moved in here after my divorce in 2006. Just a little over a year later, the house, which I had named, SERENITY, burned. It was 99% gutted, and I lost my two dogs, Sally, an 11-year-old great Dane, and Wrinkles, my 14-year-old, blind bulldog. This was the culmination of my Dark Night of the soul, which had seemed to hit me all at once in 2006-2007. My mother died that year, after a 14 month battle with pancreatic cancer. She was only 60. The youngest of my five daughters had left home that same year, and while that’s not a tragedy at all, it felt like one to me. Then came the divorce. And finally there was the fire--it seemed my darkest night wasn’t quite finished with me after all. I had lost almost everything before that point, and as I poked through the wet ashes and soot the next day, I realized that I had now been stripped all the way to the bone.

No better time to start over. (And no, I didn’t come to that realization that day--there were a few days of wallowing in pity first, particularly the day after the fire, when I hit a deer and smashed up my car, which I was practically living in!)

That’s when I started to laugh. Just sat on the side of the road as the deer bounded, uninjured and carefree, out of sight, and laughed. It was just too ridiculous at that point, to do anything else!

And from there, I picked myself up, and brushed myself off, and said, okay, there’s only one way to go from here. Forward. And that’s what I did. There I was at the age of harrurmphemmph, living in my one, mostly undamaged remaining room, with a dorm-sized mini-fridge, a futon, a TV, my cat (nine lives!) and a laptop. And not much else. (Though thank goodness the room that survived the fire, was a room that had its own attached bathroom!)

Since then I have rebuilt my beloved home, which really has become my haven, my “Serenity.” I share it now with my fiancé, Lance, and we have accumulated quite the little family together. “Little” being a relative term. We have a pair of English Mastiffs, Dozer and Daisy, who weigh 203 pounds and 208 pounds respectively, and a little pudgy English Bulldog named Niblet, who is bigger than both of them, inside her mind. We also have the aforementioned cat, Glorificus (“Glory” for short,) who adores her canine pups and keeps them firmly in line. And we've acquired a pair of stray cats as well, a mother and son, Luna (Lulu for short) and Butters aka Buddy. Lulu showed up pregnant during a lunar eclipse, had a litter, and vanished again. We found homes for all the kittens except one. Butters. We got him fixed and kept him. A few months later, Lulu returned, again expecting. This litter was born on the "Monster Moon." Again, all the kittens were spayed and neutered and placed in homes, and this time we got Lulu to the vet in time to spay her before the cycle could repeat.

Glory is not amused.

She has a story of her own, my old Glory cat, having been with me before the Dark Times descended, she went through it all with me, moved with me, survived the fire, and remains with me still. She's tolerating the newcomers. Barely.

My partner is an artist, a mechanic, a welder and an inventor, and the rumors are true, he is much younger than I

A Better Choice

Delvin wants to destroy all humans. Then he gets to know Emma who doesn't. They have opposing views on how to make vampires safe. This is their story. A book with outstanding characters!

Book #2 in the Wings in the Night: Reborn series/Wings in the Night #20

I know, from the 3 star rating I put it doesn't appear that I liked it. Well, yes and no. First of all I have to start off by saying that the Wings in the Night series is my all-time-favorite series and Maggie Shayne is my all-time-favorite author. Can she write a bad book? Of course not! (and no, I'm actually not being sarcastic there)

I just didn't like the main character, Devlin (the only thing I DID like about him was he was transformed by Damien Namatar- my FAVORITE vampire! I hope we see more of him in Shannon in upcoming books!!) Emma was awesome! I loved her back story While helping Devlin Emma and her father draw the attention of the DPI and her father is captured. Emma makes Devlin take him with her to save her father. Unfortunately, Emma gets captured and DPI tortures her and while she's trying to fight back she accidentally stabs herself in the leg and she bleeds out. The DPI thugs give her some of Devlin's blood to transform her.

Devlin comes back to rescue with her with who helped him escape- Willem Stone (yes, FINALLY, we find out he's alive!! Wootwootwoot!!!) Devlin and Emma head back to Willem and Sarafina's place to discover that they had "ways" of extending Willem's life (although we don't know what "ways" those are yet. We find out that Sarafina transformed Emma's mom). Devlin, Emma, and some of the Offspring (Wolf and Sheena) go to rescue Emma's father and actually end up meeting with Rhiannon who is trying to rescue Roland. They get everyone out, even some sifters, and a vampiress who was kept in a box. Turned out the vampiress was Emma's mom! It took a lot of blood for her to regain consciousness, and even then she wasn't all there in the head. But, hopefully with time and blood things will right themselves. The Offspring help Devlin by disguising his island where he's building the "vampire resistance" from prying human eyes.

Now, I have mixed feelings about the upcoming book in the series: The Rhiannon Chronicles. I know Ms. Shayne LOVES Rhiannon, but does she really need another book? She's (almost) always one of the side characters in the other books as it is. I just don't feel the same about Rhiannon and Roland unfortunately. What about some of my favorite characters? I'd love to see more of Damien & Shannon, Cuyler Jade & Ramsey, Rachel & Donovan, Max & Lou. If I had to choose just one couple of course I'd select Damien & Shannon. *sigh* :o) The question is, what comes AFTER the Rhiannon book?

I found this book pretty well edited for an Independently published book. The two things glaring were: blog was spelled "bblog" on one of the pages (I forget which one) and on the back of the book (the physical one) the heroine is called "Eva" not "Emma." That one was definitely a cringe-worthy error.

Our Review, by LITERAL ADDICTION's Pack Alpha - Chelle:

Another enchanting installment from Maggie Shayne's legendary vampire world of vampires, Chosen, and the evil DPI, now made even richer by the addition of the Offspring and another new group that joins the party at the end of this installment.

Maggie Shayne has always captivated my attention with her Wings in the Night world, and Twilight Vendetta was no different as it took me on an action-packed thrill ride of danger, betrayal, loss, love, and growth.

Twilight Vendetta picks up where Twilight Guardians left off with the discovery of the Offspring, the destruction of the ship, The Anemone, and the vampires running for their lives from the evil government agency known as the DPI. While I would suggest reading Twilight Guardians before reading Twilight Vendetta, Maggie wrote it in such a way that things are laid out for you to follow. You just don't get the emotional investment of everything that happened with Twilight Guardians, and trust me, it's not something you want to miss. :)

Emma isn't your normal, everyday girl. She's an adrenaline junkie, and one of the Chosen--humans with a rare blood condition that stunts their life and the only ones able to be made into vampires. She also grew up with a vampire for a mother, and genius for a father, but her life has been all about living, in between doing everything she can to find out what happened to her mother when she was just a child. Her life has also been consistently tied to a certain handsome vampire who has saved her more times than she even knows about.

Devlin is a vampire with a tragic past. And he's not much for people. He's a loner, and his main goal is ensuring the survival of his kind. Unfortunately, a troublesome, beautiful Chosen keeps popping up every so often, disrupting his solitude and making him feel things he doesn't want to be feeling.

As circumstances force Emma and Devlin to work together to save Devlin's friends, the children the vampires saved from the Anemone, and Emma's father, they can longer fight their feelings for each other and sparks ignite.

As the DPI gets more and more corrupt and ruthless in their strides to take down the vampire race, secrets are revealed, alliances are formed, and some big changes must be made to ensure survival. The world-building and story arc of Wings in the Night: Reborn is unfolding beautifully, and I cannot wait to see what happens next!

I so adore Maggie Shayne and her Twilight series . This series had been a favorite of mine from the very first book to now . I really cant say anything that has not already been said before . The Twilight books get better with age with the new vamps and the old one that we cant get enough of . If you want a new spin on vampires and the way they come together to help each other then GRAB one of Maggie Shaynes books you really wont regret it I never did ..

Devlin doesn’t like humans. Most would support the extermination of the entire vampire race, and that’s exactly what will happen, unless his plan to organize a resistance force succeeds.

Emma is the only mortal who’s ever managed to get under his skin. She’s haunted him his entire life. He senses when she’s in trouble, is drawn to her by energies he cannot understand.

Emma is a thrill seeker who makes a hefty living writing about her adventures. Now, she wants to walk with vampires, to live among them. The book she’ll write afterward will be the work of a lifetime, and will help establish peace between the races. Education, enlightenment, understanding–these are the ways to end the current climate of fear and violence.

Devlin is determined to visit destruction on humans.
Emma is determined to stop him, even if it means betraying the powerful passion that burns between them, and the feelings underneath, feelings so explosive that even she is afraid to plumb them too deeply.

Now, anti-vampire forces have taken captives–two young mutants Devlin is sworn to protect, and Emma’s own peacenik father.

Emma and Devlin must find common ground to save innocent lives, and to prevent the annihilation of a species. Maybe his, or maybe her own. And in such close proximity, with so much at stake, the feelings they've been fighting, reach the boiling point.

Emma is a thrill seeking Chosen. Her adventurous lifestyle finances her research on vampires. She wants to help their cause and show the human world they can co-exist. To the vampires the Chosen are to be protected, and Devlin has learned this the hard way. It seems to him that Emma just can't keep out of harm's way. He wants to keep his distance from her because of the pull he feels toward her, but he doesn't know how to do that when he has to make sure she's safe.

Emma is the type of woman who takes life by the horns. She is absolutely fearless, and I think part of the reason is that as a Chosen she will either die young or become a vampire. She is an optimist believes in peace between the humans and vampires. Devlin is a vampire who is the polar opposite of Emma. He is attracted to her, but doesn't trust her. He is a warrior who hates humans, and believes war is the answer.

Twilight Vendetta was an exciting read. The vampires are up against a government agency called the DPI that is out to eradicate them. Then add in government created mutants called the Offspring, and you are in for plenty of suspense. Unfortunately I didn't have the opportunity to read the first book in the series; I think had I read the previous book this story would have had even more of an impact. Despite this fact I still enjoyed the novel. Shayne is an author nearly every fan of the paranormal genre has heard of, but until now this has been my first opportunity to read her work, and I was not disappointed!

Emma Benatar is a Chosen one. Devlin is a vampire with a hatred for humans but he's drawn to Emma he has been since she was 2. 2 teenage Others traveling with him get captured by DPI and Emma sees it happen. She gets in trouble to get a vampire to come to her aid as they do when a Chosen is in danger and in need of help. They are drawn to one another but Emma is a peaceable person and Devlin isn't.Her father is taken by the DPI as well. They work together to go after the teens and her peace loving father. The story is wonderfully woven and I had to read it from end to end in one sitting. I was riveted. I love the vampire and Chosen interaction in this series and look forward to the next one.

**I was given an ARC of this in exchange for an honest review.**

Maggie's expert crafting has created another terrific chapter in the world of her vampires. Eva & Devlin's story started long before the writing of this bok, and comes to a satisfying conclusion with this telling. Eva's stubborn tenacity and hopeful heart create the perfect foil for Devlin's curmudgeon tendencies.

I love the home they've built on the island, and am hoping more stories involve it. I would love the opportunity to explore it myself if it truly existed! The detailed descriptions included in this storyline make you feel like you are right there with the characters discovering the potential. Can't wait for the next installment!

I love this series and can't wait for more. Just started to get into it with Twilight Guardians. This the new series that comes from her precious Vampire series. It comes at you in many directions as the Vampires are being
hunted and need slit up. This story is mainly about Devlin and Emma who is a chosen one. She is to be protected at all cost by Vampires and Devlin seems to always be the one who takes on the responsibility. It's fast paced and had me so caught up in the story. I had to know what came next and who was around the corner. It also had a few steamy hot moments of passion. This was a book that all the great stuff rolled up in one. My hat off to you Maggie Shayne.

Terrific story for paranormal loverrs

This is a second story about vampires finding their lifeboats. Dev want to destroy humans, who wants to do the same. Emma is half-time but hasn't decided whether to be vampire yet. She is in love with Dev, who is her literate, but is so stubborn to realize it.

Enjoyed it

Strong characters with hidden agendas, dire situations and quick thinking solutions. I liked this one. Caught my attention from the first page. It's definitely got some threads left dangling though. I know it's a setup for the next story but don't like the incomplete feeling.
