This is a really interesting, somewhat dry book. Samuel Lane was a shoemaker, tanner, farmer and surveyor in 1700's New Hampshire. He was also a father of a large family, although it was typical for the time - 6 or 7 kids. He provided quite a prosperous lifestyle for his family by working hard, keeping meticulous records, and managing everyone well so that everyone worked almost as hard as he did, to the benefit of all. This family had so many material possessions, compared to the families at Fort Number 4, who were thrilled with a carved wooden cradle. On the other hand, this father was so hard working. It just goes to show that people who work this hard can get ahead.

It is amazing to realize what one man's life was about on a daily basis in the eighteenth century and to know that he was my sixth great-grandfather a special pleasure.
