I was expecting & hoping for a gripping story based on the description and, unfortunately, this didn't meet the expectation. This was more day to day living than anything else. The disappearance of Florine's mother seemed to be a background element. Yes, Florine carries it with her daily, but the police case of who/what/why didn't really come into play until about 3/4 of the way through the book.

I did enjoy the close community aspect. There are some great characters in the story but their storie

This story is a mix of coming of age and tragedy as the reader knows early on Florine's mother Carlie vanished. "I was the girl whose mother vanished. I could sense the other kids' eyes on me and hear their whispers. But no sense talking to Daddy about it. He told me to 'get on with it'. .."
And getting on with it never really happens when there is a black hole where one's mother has vanished into, and all the questions swirl. The real love story is between Bud and Florine because it's not tidy a

This is the sequel to RED RUBY HEART IN A COLD BLUE SEA. I usually do not read sequels right after the previous book. I loved RED RUBY HEART,it was a lovely book to "dwell in". I could not wait to read the sequel. WRITTEN ON MY HEART was a great read as well.I enjoyed it! It was nice to see Bud and Florine go on in their lives.I love the characters, locale and the story line. BUT, I do wish the books could have been all one book. In WRITTEN there were many passages where the reader is brought up ...more

Written on My Heart by Morgan Callan Rogers is the delightful follow up to Red Ruby Heart in a Cold Blue Sea (reviewed HERE). Starring the same cast of characters, this newest release follows Florine Gilham through the first few (somewhat) turbulent years of marriage to Bud Warner. Equally compelling are the shocking revelations when the mystery of her mother Carlie's longtime disappearance is finally solved.

Florine's teen years were tumultuous following the disappearance of her mother

What a refreshing story about a young couple whose love endures through tragedy, idiocy and against odds that would break apart most families.
Bud and Florine are just twenty when they get married and have their first child shortly thereafter. Although their friends and families are thrilled by this union, and help show that it definitely takes a village to not only raise a child, but support a young marriage. Florine has lived a lifetime before she even has her first child, with her own mother

Recommends it for: Readers who love Maine, fiction/mystery, family dynamics
Written on My Heart is the accomplished sequel to Morgan Callan Roger's first novel, Ruby Red Heart In A Cold Blue Sea. A very well crafted, sensitive portrayal of the lives of a small cluster of families living in a fairly isolated, fictional coastal fishing village in Maine (think mid-coast environs). Set in the 70's. First person narrative by Florine: bright, pretty, fiercely clever, wild-in-her-youth, whose mother mysteriously disappeared when she was twelve. The heartache she suffers, along ...more

I received a free copy of this book from Penguin First to Read in exchange for an honest review.

This is a small town book, with the sort of usual, small family problems--and one rather large mystery. Florine was raised in the Point, grew a little wild, but then settled down with Bud. They married and had two children while just out of their teens, and for a while, life seems good, even if that big mystery--the disappearance of Florine's mother, Carlie--haunts the family.

But both Bud and Florine

Oh my....REd Ruby Heart is my all time fave book. The way she described things made the words juicy, succulent, fresh and sweet. Hard to describe but it was like eating a cold very ripe pear on a hot summer day. Almost overwhelming. I'd go back and reread whole paragraphs just for the sheer joy of feeling the words enter my soul. And this sequel doesn't disappoint either. Not quite the same style as the first one, but very compelling. I found myself slowing down near the end as I didn't want to ...more

I received an ARC of this book through NetGalley-thank you!

This book is a sequel, but it can definitely be read as a stand alone. It really bothers me when book descriptions end up not even being close to what a book is about. In this case, I thought it was going to be about Florine trying to figure out what happened to her mother Carlie. Instead, it was about small-town life in Maine. The mystery wasn't really a big part of the book, and the resolution felt like it was just thrown in there.

This book was hard for me to get into and empathize with the characters. There were many times I thought of stopping and not finishing, but I am glad I did as all the action and interest happens in the last tiny bit of the book... I just wish that interested was better sprinkled throughout. 2.5 stars. (I wish we could give 1/2s on here!)

The characters are likeable enough and the building blocks of the story are interesting. But the writing and pacing are pedestrian and tedious. I got about halfway through and couldn't bring myself to dedicate more time to it. So I skipped to the end to find out what happened to Carlie and called it good. ...more

I thought about it all day but here it is my first 5 star rating of the year for a written novel (I gave another one to a graphic novel...).

This is the second book about Florine. It is a while ago that I have read the first novel and the author did a good job about reminding things from the first novel especially in the first 50 pages but without getting boring.

The story is set in the early 70's. Florine is 20 now and about to marry her lifelong friend Bud. Both grew up in "The Point", four fami

Enjoyed it, but not to the same level as I did the first book. This one got kind of bogged down in the details of day-to-day living, dealing with the kid and cooking meals, etc. But it still had that wonderful sense of community that I loved about the first book, and I still love the realistic grittiness of Florine and the way she talks and thinks. Still a worthwhile read. And (view spoiler) ...more

Florine Gilham and Bud Warner have married young and immediately are expecting a baby. They are deeply in love and that love will be sorely tested through this story. Two parts of this novel stand out vividly – the depth and richness of this couple’s love and Florine’s intense love for The Point, part of the Maine shoreline, in all of its beautiful, powerful and raging moods as the seasons regularly change. One fact in Florine’s past, however, destroys any peace she finds.

I loved this book about young newlyweds struggling to prioritize their marriage, children, employment, roots, and friendships. Dottie and Florine have a close, sisterly relationship based on honesty and support. Bud and Glen base theirs more on beer than honesty, and Morgan Callan Rogers outstandingly illustrates their desire to balance machismo and independence with responsibility and growth. I enjoyed seeing the men develop and regress, and then finally take the steps forward to become better ...more

I really enjoyed this sequel to "Red Ruby Heart in a Cold Blue Sea." Sometimes sequels to really great first novels wind up sucking because the author has lost steam. But that wasn't the case here, this was a great sequel to a great first novel.

I loved the exploration of Florine's marriage to Bud. It was a nice snapshot of any relationship, fraught with both good times and bad times. I liked that Florine is a strong character and stood up to Bud when he started drinking and being abusive towards

“I love him for many reasons, not the least of which is he can still surprise me.”

This story was so much more than I first thought. Even though it was the second book in this series, I didn’t have to read the first one not to want to know what happens to Florine and Bud.

The story begins with such promise on their wedding day. Florine and Bud have been friends since childhood and finally realize that they love each other. The only thing that has kept them apart is the disappearance of Florine’s

Written on my Heart is a very fine book about life in a small town with family and friend and lots of history and secrets surrounding them. The main characters, Bud and Florine knew each other all their lives and fall in love, have kids, get married and have their challenges. They are surrounded by quirky and very real friends and family that bind them all together with themes of the 1970s like Vietnam, drugs, teen pregnancy and alcohol. Underlying the day-to-day fabric of busy lives are secrets ...more

The story held my attention, but I wouldn't call it a page turner. The love story aspect was great! Very relatable, in my opinion. The mystery of the missing mother felt like it was out of place and unnecessary. My biggest problem with this book was some of the dialog. I couldn't figure out why some of the characters talked like they were from the Ozarks instead of 1970s New England."Was" is not an acceptable substitute for "were", but I'm a grammar freak! I also wish the author had made the les ...more

This is an excellent follow up to Red Ruby Heart in A Cold Blue Sea! It took me on a roller coaster full of emotion and I loved every minute of it! And just like the last book, this story got very sad just before the satisfying conclusion. I loved the complexity of each character and how much they developed from the previous book. It was also sweet and comforting that the loved ones who passed away in the last book were just as present and important in this story. I hope there is more because I' ...more

I won this book on GoodReads, which is very nice. It was a little difficult to receive in the mail as they wanted it signed for, which is frustrating. So far the book is a bit Bible-y & wholesome for me. I think it is a second in a series but it seems fine as a stand-alone. Not sure about the pacing.
The lead character is stubborn and antagonistic. Makes it harder to read. Other characters a bit better but none are subtle types. We're not let into their heads so we see their actions but not moti

Written on My Heart opens with a very pregnant Florine marrying Bud. When Florine was thirteen, her mother disappeared. Finding out what happened to her mother is part of the plot, but the book is really a character study. I couldn't help liking Florine and admiring her strength and determination to create a family. She is fiercely in love with Bud and sticks with him through several struggles. All the characters seemed very real to me and it was a pleasure to get to know them.

I will say that I was curious to see how the mystery unfolded the entire time and I found the love story and the characters believable. It was a decent read. The style/use of language didn't quite work for me. Sometimes the descriptions felt too crafted - it pulled me out of the story. There was too much Jesus for me, though I'm sure that wouldn't be a problem for many. It was interesting to see its the second of a series - I'm surprised by that and wonder what it could cover. I read this book pretty much in one sitting. The story begins with a wedding and a very pregnant young bride. Florine and Bud know that they are meant to be together. But life gets crazy when you have babies to take care of and not enough money to go around. Bud's drinking escalates so Florine takes their children and moves back home. This book is filled with characters - sometimes I had to stop to remember who's who. I loved the setting, a Maine fishing village. There was a mystery to solve. Ju ...more

I started the free book when I got it and enjoyed the first few chapters. I got busy and just didn't get back to it. I've realized since then that I've read other things but just haven't been drawn back to this one. It usually makes me nuts not to know how a book or movie ends even if it isn't good. Its been right next to my favorite chair but unfinished. I suppose I just didn't connect with it enough. I can think of nothing wrong with what I read so maybe its just me. ...more
