I have always been fascinated and inspired by the stories behind hymns, and also with the hymn writers. Alfred B Smith was one of those writers, actively involved in various aspects of gospel music most of his life. Alfred gave us that wonderful chorus, “For God So Loved the World,” and he tells a delightful story about it in this book. There are 115 such stories. If you grew up on gospel hymns, you will recognize many of the songs and writers he talks about. All the stories in this book are authentic, as Albert actually conversed, and even worked with, most of the people mentioned. Also included is the printed music of each song. I loved the book so much, I am going to read it over again starting tomorrow, one hymn and its story every morning.
I love this compilation of hymns of the faith and the history behind the writings of the lyrics or music or both. The signed copy first purchased my senior year at Pensacola Christian College has a place of honor on our antique pump organ.
Borrowed this book from Henrietta AG Church library. Reading this book while having a tablet nearby to hear some of the unknown hymns, using Napster was great.
