A good retelling usually stays as close to the original source material as possible and polishes the story with an updated sheen for a new audience to appreciate. The best retellings, though, fearlessly divert from the original while deftly preserving its essence. They keep you on your toes with unexpected twists and they take fun tangents into unexplored nooks that deepen the world and enrich its characters.

The Rat Prince falls firmly in the latter category as Bridget Hodder takes the familiar

So you thought the Cinderella story hinged on a glass slipper and finding happiness with a random prince she just met? Well, think again!

Bridget Hodder's inventive retelling of Cinderella begins with a rat, Prince Char, who lives in Lancastyr Manor, along with his many rat-subjects. Also in Lancastyr Manor is Rose, now insultingly called "Cinderella" by her stepmother, Wilhelmina. Her father is out of sorts with an Alzheimers-esque ailment, leaving Rose subject to the whims and impulses of the w

I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Books come in all shapes and sizes inside. Some are small and quirky, others are massive and solemn. Naturally there are about as many degrees of subtle difference as there are pages in the world. The best part is, though, when you pick up a book that you know so little about, make a guess as to what sort of book it'll be, and become happily surprised by what you find inside.

I'll admit I haven't read many retellings. So when I found

If I were to tell you that I had just finished one of the most delightful books I have ever read in my ENTIRE life, would you believe me?

Well, you should because I just read and LOVED Bridget Hodder's THE RAT PRINCE. Let's start with the outside cover. Now, this cover is pretty special. That's Char, prince of the rats (northern kingdom). Char is noble and caring and dashing. He has a right-hand man (rat), Swiss, who is the kind of buddy that you want when you're running a kingdom.

Now you have

The Rat Prince by Bridget Hodder is a masterful retelling of Cinderella with a twist. Or, if I’m being honest, many twists. Many wonderful twists. Hodder takes the bones of fairytale we know and casts it in a way that feels both new and familiar. It’s a blend of a story we know and love with a tale we are hearing for the first time. While I found the plot unique and page-turner worthy (I read it in one big gulp), I also loved Rose, Char and, of course, Swiss. The characters felt real, and the di ...more

“If you don't like Cinderella because she seems so "naive" and "weak," listen to this quote from the Walt himself: "She believed in dreams, all right, but she also believed in doing something about them. When Prince Charming didn't come along, she went over to the palace and got him.”

I've spent the last few days in the enchanting world of The Rat Prince by Bridget Hodder. I was fortunate to read an ARC of this captivating fairy tale. All I knew before reading was that the book reimagined the Cinderella story. I'm glad I didn't learn more about it before diving in, because there were quite a few twists that I didn't see coming. The story is told through dual narratives of Cinderella, or Lady Rose as she was formerly known, and Char, the Rat Prince. I appreciated the author's ...more

This is what my 10 year old son says after reading and advanced review copy of The Rat Prince:

"The Rat Prince is an intriguing story I read start to finish in less than twenty four hours. I didn’t put it down, except when my mom made me. It’s a blend of the classic story Cinderella and The Secrets of Nimh. The hook is Cinderella meets the rat guardians of her family and they embark on a great adventure. That the rats have a ruler that is much smarter than you would think for a rat. He’s a good

From the moment I heard about the book, I was smitten. A re-telling of Cinderella, partially from one of the rats who became a foot man's perspective? Delicious. From the very beginning, we are drawn into the world of the Rat Prince, who feels compelled to assist the horribly treated Rose, the rightful Lady Lancastyre. Only an evil stepmother, a mad Prince, and being two different species can stand in the way of their happiness. This is a delightful story, told by a wonderful storyteller. Hodder ...more

***I had the pleasure of reading an advance copy of THE RAT PRINCE in exchange for an honest review.***

On first glance, one might imagine that this book is for children, and that it is nothing more than a retelling of the classic Cinderella story. One would be sorely mistaken on both counts.

I have deep respect for the depth of the characters and the complexity of the world Hodder created in The Rat Prince. It feels less like a work of fancy than an historical novel, despite the fact that it is

I was lucky enough to get an Advance Review Copy of this charming book. Billed as a retelling of the Cinderella story, for me it was more evocative of A Little Princess with a dash of The Rescuers. Lady Rose (Cinderella) and Prince Char (the Rat Prince) are the perfect match in this romantic/animal comedy.

I particularly loved Hodder's descriptions of Rat culture, complete with imaginative rat names (Princess Mozzerella, Swiss, Char,) and a more democratic system than that of the human society. H

I was lucky enough to receive an ARC of this book for an honest review. SO MUCH FUN!!

I LOVED this book. The tale is familiar (Cinderella), but the spin was completely new. This is the tale of the Rat (who happened to be a prince) who was turned into one of the coachmen for Cinderella's ball. From page one, I was swept into the story, and despite Char being a rat, I just loved him. So noble. Kind. Intelligent. Wise. Compassionate. . . . And I could go on. But he was all the things a prince and he

This Cinderella retelling was glorious and empowering and so, so lovely! I kept wishing for something to happen at the end *no spoilers here* and when it did I nearly danced! Hodder has created a glorious tale here, one in which Cinderella has so much agency and voice. And the prince? Oh, what she does with this character! I found myself cheering for the unlikeliest of heroes (you will too). But the underlying message in this tale is so brave and brilliant and true: that love comes from knowing ...more

I had the chance to read an advance copy of The Rat Prince, and I'm so glad I did.

This story is enchanting. I really had no idea what to expect, other than a retelling of Cinderella, but this was so much more than that.

The chapters alternate point of view between the Rat Prince and Cinderella (Lady Rose), showing us there was much more going on in the manor than we've been told. The way the author twists and weaves the story makes it a whole new take on the classic.

The characters drew me in--yes

Just when you think you know the Cinderella story, here comes this charming and captivating re-telling told in alternating perspectives —hers (Cinderella's) and his (Char, the Rat Prince).

I loved the lyrical writing and the well-developed characters, especially the rats, who had their own culture, history, and divisions. I also very much appreciated the fact that of all the Cinderella telling I've ever read, this is one of the few that fully addressed my major problem with the story — why did Ci

I never thought I'd read a book written from the point of view of a rat, but this is such an original retelling of Cinderella. The plot is full of twists and turns and I loved the cast of characters, especially Prince Char the rat. The characters are well-developed - Cinderella for once has a reason for putting up with her stepmother's mistreatment of her, and the supporting cast includes a wonderful same-sex couple, Sir Tompkin and Lord Bluestone.

Quirky, funny and thoroughly charming, the story

The most adorable, fun Cinderella story you'll ever read! The chapters alternate between Cinderella's POV and the Rat Prince's POV to tell a tale of a girl who wants to save her ailing father from her wicked stepmother, and a rat who must ensure his kingdom's safety from humans. Only by joining together can Cinderella and the Rat Prince overcome their dire situations.

THE RAT PRINCE is a delightful retelling of the story of Cinderella, only this time we observe half of the story through the eyes of Prince Char, ruler of the rats' northern kingdom. The other half of the story is told from the viewpoint of Cinderella herself.

I was privileged to read this book before its release date and I devoured it in one sitting, a rare occurrence for me since I usually only read before bed and it's five minutes and I'm asleep. This one kept me up late, and was definitely worth the sleep lost.

The scene for the story is one with which we are all familiar, Cinderella and Prince Charming. But the author has re-imagined the tale to craft a new hero and a new definition of heroism. The characters are three-dimensional and sympathetic,

I was lucky to read an advanced copy of THE RAT PRINCE.

I was so excited to read THE RAT PRINCE because I love the premise--a Cinderella story told, in part, from a rat's point of view. Prince Char is dashing and heroic and his one-liners are hilarious. (My favorite: "It's good to be prince.") I laughed out loud so many times--particularly when he complimented Cinderella on her rat-like virtues. And, I will be honest, I totally fell for him during his duel at the end. Swoon!

THE RAT PRINCE is a delicious read! The author delights with the traditional elements of the Cinderella tale alongside a new and creative story with fresh perspectives. I loved the new, more empowered cinderella and the inclusion of the m/m couple, Sir Tompkin and Lord Bluestone. The Rat Prince was a delight! Prince Char was so gallant and charming, he's now vying with Justin from The Secret of NIMH for my favourite fictional rat. I loved the dual POV between Rose and Char. It gave the reader a taste of the familiar story while building the new world.

This was a cute Cinderella's retelling, with an unexpected main character: Prince Char of the Northern Realm... who happens to be a rat. A royal rat. lol
Now Char is an industrious, fast on his little feet, smart prince, who happens to have a soft spot for poor Lady Rose, who has been nicknamed Cinderella by her wicked stepmother...
Char is well aware that the well being of his kingdom depends on getting rid of Cinderella's stepmother: the woman is dead serious on poisoning all of Char's people.

Charming. Magical. Delightful.

I'd be the first one to admit that I'm often not a fan of fairytale retellings, but The Rat Prince is an exception. This is, of course, a retelling of Cinderella, but it attacks it with humour, spark, and inventiveness. Not only do we get to follow an unusual take on Cinderella herself, but we also get to follow the rats whose normal role is no more than to be turned into coachmen for Cinderella's trip to the ball. In fact it's in the rats, and in particular Prince

This book is utterly adorable - and I LOVED the voice of the Rat Prince himself, Char, with a mad and passionate adoration. Every section from his point of view was utter catnip for me - hilarious, quirky, wonderful and unique, offering a genuinely different & fabulous take on the Cinderella story. It takes a certain genius to take a story as familiar as Cinderella and make it into something alive and emotionally-charged. The Rat Prince succeeds wonderfully because it brings new levels of substance to the classic fairy story. I found a rich history and mythology here underpinning the classic plot points, and Hodder’s characterization of Cinderella (aka Rose) and the Rat Prince had me emotionally invested from the first chapter.
