Meredith, the wacky-witch heroine of Meredith, The Witch Who Wasn't, returns in this, her second adventure, originally published in German as Zauberspuk bei Merrilu. Preparing her breakfast one morning, Meredith inadvertently sings the spell for uninvited guests, and finds herself confronting a gluttonous little sorcerer who demands more and more food. When Meredith finally gets fed up with her visitor, a spell-war ensues, and the two magical practitioners go head to head...
Although I didn't find Meredith's Mixed-Up Magic quite as entertaining as the first Meredith title, it was still an engagingly "witchy" picture-book. Christa Unzner's colorful illustrations were delightful, her puppet-like sorcerer both diminutive (at first) and menacing, her scenes energetic and full of fun. I continued to find Meredith's blue cat (with white spots) adorable, and wish she had been given more of a role - or even a name! Still, overall this was a book I'd be happy to recommend to young readers who enjoy stories of witches, or are looking for gentler Halloween fare.
I didn't find this one nearly as cute/engaging as the first book in the series. The first was completely "magical" and fun and warm; I loved how Meredith enjoyed doing tasks better than having magic do them for her. This one just gets a bit "out-of-control" and lacks depth as Meredith and a wizard she inadvertently invited over start battling with spells, much to the chagrin of her cute blue-and-white-polka-dotted kitty. Still, some of the illustrations are just so adorable I was smiling by the end.
Best for kids ages 5 and up. Early Literacy Skills: Narrative Skills
From Amazon: Meredith returns, and her magic spells are as unpredictable as ever. Meredith accidentally utters the spell for uninvited guests, and--whoosh! --a little sorcerer with an insatiable appetite flies in and plops himself down at her table. "Hungry!" he screeches, and Meredith has her hands full first trying to feed him, and then trying to get rid of him.?What follows is a battle of fantastically funny spells that lasts until lunchtime and teaches her to mind her words and watch out for unexpected magic.?
A magical book where a witch learns to watch what she says. May be a little tough for 5 year olds, but may still be a good read. First book in the Meredith the Witch series is Meredith, the witch who wasn't.
