Rate this book

Excellent re-imagining of the Uther Pendragon/ King Arthur story.
Told in a way only David Gemmell could tell it (And maybe John Gwynne).

My book was the Omnibus edition which contains both Ghost king and Last sword of power.

I've thoroughly enjoyed my time with both of these books.
A very well deserved 5* for each from me

Definitely going into the DNF section after the first half wraps up...

The first half of this omnibus begins with Ghost King and is made of aspects that can't really be reconciled in order to finish this two part book. The setup was well-established with a premise and plot that while simply, worked within the narrative being told. Most of the characters were enjoyable, mysterious, interesting, or fascinating, especially since there is a fairly diverse array of them, within the story that made sense mostly. But then this book's final act somehow manages to have the worst ending imaginable, disassembles the "main" relationship to shreds (in a very intentional way), loses all sense of consistency with the magic system that makes no sense, and results in a final hook to incentivize reading the sequel…by that point, I'd completely given up. For the first 150 pages, I truly enjoyed the narrative and aspects of the story to where it was leading. But somehow, the final 80 pages shocked in the worst ways possible that completely soured all fun, joy, and adventure established.

This magnificent omnibus, containing the titles "Ghost King" and "Last sword of Power", is another absolute triumph from the late great David Gemmell.

These two titles are originally from 1988, and like the author said in his foreword, this is not a historical novel but an heroic fantasy that is sprinkled with a touch of Romano-British history.

Storytelling is absolutely terrific, the tales are wonderfully structured and executed, and all figures come superbly to life in this tale of heroic fantasy at its best.

This heroic fantasy has again elements of history, but it has various masterful touches of the mystical and paranormal interwoven, making and giving this omnibus such a great joy to read.

We follow in the first part, "Ghost King", the boy Thuro, who after the murder of his father, the High King Aurelius Maximus, by the treacherous King Eldared, must flee for his life, until he encounters the magical Culain, Lord of the Lance, and the beautiful Laitha, and with them he will become a man and will rename himself as, Uther Pendragon, who will at the end will slay the famous and fearful Witch Queen.

In the second part, "Last Sword of Power", the long undefeated High King Uther Pendragon will have to face huge personal domestic problems, eventually losing the love of his life and that will put him off balance for a long time, until with the help of his lost son, Cormac, and several other important figures, they will bring him back to life to save his realm against the devil in the form of Wotan, and by doing this he's saying goodbye to his amazing world of magic and legend.

What is to follow as a whole is a tremendous heroic fantasy with all its historical touches, combined with legend and mystic, and not to forget heroism and evil, and all these ingredients will keep you spellbound right till the very emotional and heartfelt end.

Highly recommended, for this is a marvellous omnibus, containing two great books, and that's why I like to call it: "A Most Impressive Magical & Powerful Stones"!

Gemmell's take on Arthurian legend has all the action and musings on the nature of good and evil that most of his books have, but is somewhat let down by flat endings.

I don't want to make it sound like its not a cracking read; Gemmell's weakest is better than most overwrought fantasy, but this doesn't really hold up next to his really good stuff like Legend, Waylander, Morningstar and others.

David Gemmell writes heroism and heartbreak unlike anyone else I've read. The man knew how to write satisfying endings for near all characters.
